For anybody that's making or has made Padme's white Tatooine outfit, what do you think about this fabric for her cloak?

    [image=http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/42c2c75/bc/Costumes/Purple+Fabric+Sample.jpg?bc4zJQ9Ax78ERsD4]

I was originally going to make the dress out of this, but it's a little too purplish, so I thought it might make a nice variation on the cloak. What do you guys think?

Also, I know there's already a thread for this dress, but this is just a question of fabric, and I bet that if I posted this in the other thread, nobody would respond: that's what happened last time I posted.

    QueenLaniAmidala,
I think a good fabric would be a textured fabric. The original fabric looks almost velvety like. not crushed, but a design is present on the cloak. The color is mixed with grey, silver, and metallic white. I think I saw this frabic design in another thread... I'll find it and send you a private message with the site!
Here are two photos to explain:

Oops the thing goofed-- the pictures aren't really suppoused to be that SMALL. The pictures are big enough to see the detail accurately! Just go to www.thenextamidala.com and go to the AOTC gallarie and pick the cloak out of the thumbnails. Then you can see the ACTUAL pictures I meant to post!!! I found the link with the material. I know you are probally not going to want it, since you already have material, which is NOT AT ALL BAD! Just in case if your were wondering...
    Here's the link:

    And a Fabric close-up:

Glad I could help-- P.A. Sky--

Alright, thanks a bunch, that does look nice. I would absolutely love to buy it, except for the fact that I have no money right now. lol, I was thinking that I would just wait till I have money to buy it, but maybe I'll just make the cloak out of the fabric that I have, and when I have enough money to buy that spiffy fabric I'll make it out of that too...since I really have no other use for the fabric I currently have. Hmm, I dunno, I'll think it over. thanks for the pictures, too :)

Hi! There are plenty of uses for the fabric you already have! When I made my EpI presenate gown-I used a very similar material to what you bought-just a little different texture for the underskirt, undersleeves, and one of the neck scarves-
    www.afansview.com/2002/starwars/sw05a0013.html
I am in the top 2 pictures...
The velvet in that link is pretty close in pattern-but I think yours is a little closer in the background color...I wonder if there would be any way to cut out MANY, MANY small pieces of the silvery colored velvet and attach it to the fabric you already have-after cutting out the fabric into the pattern pieces. It would have to be done before you sew if you sewed them all on, or after if you were using any type of special glue...very time consuming-but it would be EXACT...
    just some thoughts...

Awwww, don't completely dismiss the time consuming option. :) You might be surprised at how much more satisfaction and pride you can get out of a tediously time consuming costume project that turns out fabulous looking. ;)

I know, I know, that's bad... :) lol, but the thing is, I just don't HAVE the time to do it. I'm spending too much time on this frickin forum. :)

We should sue for...costume-maker damages. There have to be some costume maker rights or something like that. haha

That silk velvet is the same fabric that I'm going to use to make the purple gown. But like you QLA, I'm low on funds at this point so I'll have to wait on that one. I think it would definitely work for the cloak as well. And yes, maybe we should sue the costumer for doing this to us ;)

Another more "perfect" option-also time consuming-but to get more exact results-would be to get the velvety fabric in the exact color, and use a burnout teqnique to do the pattern-exactly the way the real one was done...
Obi-Dawn is right...it is much better to spend months and a more money on one SPECTACULAR costume-then to go cheap and quick and have a few ones that are just okay...I saw Obi-Dawn's GORGEOUS picnic gown-and it was absolutely the best one at CII...it looked almost exactly like the real thing...no feeling is better than that...
take you time...even if it takes you months and months, because when you try that finished product on-you will feel so beautiful and so proud...and the admiration of fellow costumers is something to aspire to.
Take a look at Surlygirlie and Nostradamus' sites-their costumes are proof that the extra time is totally worth it.
That fabric that was in the link above though-I would have to say that in violet-it is absolutley perfect for the purple Padme gown...as exact as you can get.

Yeah, you're right. It is worth it to spend the time. Thanks, I think I'm gonna wait now until I have money to buy the velvet too...as of now, I have no moola. :) So I'll definitely wait. Thanks guys! And which purple dress were you guys talking about?

    Yay! :)
The purple dress being talked about is from the beginning of AOTC when she meets up with Obi-Wan and Anakin for the first time. The second fabric on this page would be perfect for it once dyed:

    velvet

So perfect in fact, that it makes me want to make it just because the accurate fabric is available. But, I must say no to new projects until the other two I'm working on are done. [face_laugh]

Oh that purple gown, yeah, I love that costume. When you said purple though, I didn't think of it because I thought the color was more of a really dark navy blue with a hint of purple...ah, I dunno though, I probably wrong. hehe And you guys are right, It would definitely be worth it to get that velvet, it's almost exactly the same pattern. I would be scared to make it out of that velvet though, for fear of messing up it's prettiness. haha

It definitely is purple, QLA. I had once thought it was a navy blue, but everyone at C2 that saw the dress said it was definitely purple.

I saw the dress in the archive, adn it is a true deep purple, and the flame burnout design is in lavender, and it is lined in lavender, as well as the thin trim all around the cloak/jacket.
The dress underneath is an indigo (blue-purple) iridescent taffeta, and the sequins are blue and purple...
Obi-Dawn-I feel the same way about wanting to make this one now, just because of the accurate fabric.
Does anyone know how to dye silk velvet? I have not yet tried...
