Hah hah hahhh!!!

The choreography was indeed "Brilliant!", it only sucks when you can't see what's happening. Kit will always look retarded at the regular playback speed. But...

IT'S THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE POSSE SHOWDOWN IN SLO-MO!!!

I'm sorry, but if it was that good slowed down, then it would have been that slow in the actual movie itself.
If you are saying you need to sit there with your finger on the frame advance to even appreciate - nay, make sense of - this scene, then you are saying that Lucas has failed miserably.

It's just what it is - Palpatine leaps over his desk and cuts down three Jedi quickly.
No major conspiracy - they are there to arrest him, they have never faced a Sith before, and he catches them cold.
You have to remember that in 1,000 years only Obi-Wan, Anakin, Yoda and Qui-Gon have ever fought anyone beyond the odd disgruntled spice miner or bounty hunter with a vendetta.
These three are facing a Sith for the first time, and not only is he the Sith Master - he is the Chancellor of the Republic.
I repeat - they are in there to "arrest the Chancellor" who sadly happens to be a Sith.
They just aren't prepared for what they are confronted with and they don't know how to respond quickly enough (damn Dark Side fog).
Mace can cut it, the other three couldn't.

Is that why the one dude was simply staring at the wall behind him when Palpy attacked. It was a ridiculous scene whose only purpose served to kill three Jedi for the story.

No.

I am not saying anyone needs to sit there with a "booger-picker" on the frame advance. What I am saying is the choreography is perfect because after slowing it down and absorbing all that actually happened, it is clear to see what GL's intent was.
[hl=black]
He wanted to show that Sidious was more than what we expected. He lays waste to three Jedi Masters in less than NINE seconds. When you take the time to examine the sequence frame by frame you will find just how wickedly efficient Palpatine was. [/hl]

It's NOT ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHY, which is absolutely the most brutal and the most efficient display of Lightsaber prowess, ever. It's about the Speed of the confrontation.

The choreography is fine, if not excellent. The speed, with which it all goes down, makes it hard to take it all in.

Although it happened after the 3 Jedis were killed, I laugh everytime when Palpatine shatters the window it takes many seconds before the wind from the outside kicks in. Maybe I make more of this scene but thats what makes us fans.

I agree.

I didnt expect the jedi to win but they died like drunk younglings.

I was VERY disapointed in this scence.

I wasn?t very disappointed about how the scene played out at all to tell you the truth. It played out pretty much how I'd imagined it to. During the final few months of the spoiler days, Ian referred to Palpatine as "The fastest swordsman in the Galaxy". Once I heard that quote I knew he would dispose three of the four Jedi that came to arrest him rather quickly - quicker than we've ever seen anyone be killed before.

It showed how powerful and how fast Palpatine really was and took some people by surprise. I mean you see that old guy standing there, we've never seen him actually fight before, and you would never think he could do what he did to those Jedi, but that's just Palpatine's style. Unpredictable as always.

SithJoe wrote earlier how crammed the Jedi were in the Chancellor's room. This would make it hard for the Jedi to make defensive moves or counter strikes should the Dark Lord make an unexpected Force or Saber move on them, not to take away or underestimate Darth Sidious's powers. Maybe Lucas did want to show us just how powerful Darth Sidious is compared to the Jedi Masters who were there to arrest or challenge him. Another also mentioned Palpy's screaming as he lunges toward the Jedi: Saesee and Kolar to deliver the fatal blows; In the game, Knights of the Old Republic 2, there is a dark side Force power where a Force user can scream toward his enemies and thus creates a loss of health points as well as stunning the victim for 6 seconds. If Lucas had intended this to be, maybe that can explain how come the Jedi, Kolar and Saesee were cut down quickly and without a challenge. Then again, there's the argument over the crammped positions the Jedi were in as well as Lucas's desire to show the Dark Lord's powerful fury. Just a theory I wanted to post; not meant to take away what some of you who already like the scene just the way it is. Makes you think though...

That's my biggest problem with this scene. As Palpatine slays two Jedi, another Jedi stands behind him and does NOTHING. He doesn't even attempt to attack or defend himself, he just stands there waiting for his turn to die. I know the Jedi are supposed to be passive, but COME ON! [face_laugh]

Bad scene. I was really disapointed. I know that the quick elimination of the Masters was meant to show Palpatine's power but honestly it didn't feature his power at all and looked really rushed and slapped together. It's a do over....

I'd agree, try slow-moing the scene and you'll see for sure.

It's supposed to illustrate how fast and deadly Sidious is but it ends up looking like the Jedi are just slow and hesitant.

The rest of the duel really isn't that bad, save for not knowing what happens before Sidious is kicked to the ground.

Yes, I agree. If you watch a fight scene in slo-mo, it may look retarded...

I didn't even notice the guy looking away. THANK GOD. :-B

Well in this case they were slow and hesitant with the exception of Mace, which is why they were disposed of quickly. So it worked fine, IMO.

Which is exactly why you're not suppose to watch it in slow-mo. :p

I have realized one thing. The way this was shot, the four jedi masters had no clue that Chancellor Palpatine was in fact a Sith Lord. They expected he would be easily arrested and couldn't imagine even that he was able to use a lightsaber. Anakin hadn't told Windu about him and the reason why they went for the arrest was because he didn't want to give emergency powers back after Grevious' death. He suddenly took anakin's saber, made that jump and caught them by surprise. The scene has not been reshot, only the part where Palpatine takes his saber out of his sleeve, and Windu't kick. All the rest is still the same except that Anakin's saber has been digitally replaced by Sidious' saber. So this way it makes much more sense the way they act, and how surprised and unable to react the look

Lucas clearly used this scene to emphasize the Emperor's fantastic lightsaber skills. The OS and novel refer to Mace's posse as three of the greatest Jedi Masters. The Emperor is simply that much better. He ignited his saber, jumped across the room, and even paused before striking. The Jedi had plenty of time to be prepared to block strikes, but Palpatine was simply that much faster than they are.

i agree with farrellg on this one.i dont share all his views about the emperor but when it comes to palpatine vs the posse i simply think that sidious was too much for them.

Having watched the film again, I'm starting to think the duel was intentionally slowed down to conceal the true power Sidious possessed. This is because the duel with Yoda is so much more expertly executed on the part of Sidious. His saber strikes are flawless and much more relaxed. Particularly convincing is his line to Yoda concerning the 'full power' of the darkside, just before he tosses Yoda like a ragdoll with lightning. This coupled with Sidious' line to Mace "Power! Unlimited POWER!!" gives me greater reason to think the duel with Mace was intended to lull the audience and Mace into a false sense of security. Mace didn't really buy it because he knew what a Sith Lord's nature was no doubt by his years of training. But Anakin surely bought into it.

The thing is, with the use of doubles and CGI face lifts, the duel could have been executed anyway Lucas wished, and I'm thinking this is what he wanted.

This scene was, quite simply, an embarrassment. leaving aside the ****** choreography of the slaying of the first three Jedi, it demonstrates as well as any other scene that Sam Jackson was the WRONG person to play Mace Windu. He sucked at the sword fighting, and apparently had no desire to train to improve; probably because he's a "superstar." Look at the jaw dropping work that Hayden and Ewan did in their Mustafar battle--wonderful swordplay worthy of the greatest stuntmen or kung-fu stars--and compare it with the pathetic display of "swordsmanship" given by SLJ and Ian McDiarmid. I mean, christ, Ian has an excuse; he's **** old. Sam Jackson was just a lazy sack of ****.

The Sidious V 4 Jedi Masters (correction 1 Jedi Master and 3 Padawans - LOL) duel was SO gay.

Saesee Tinn and Agen Kolar stood there like prunes and got cut down (after they had seen Sidious draw a crimson blade).
Kitt Fisto was nearly as lame.

I do agree that Vader V Obi-Wan on Mustafar was the best duel ever in Star wars movies.

McDiarmid and Jackson just didnt have the nack to produce a good duel.

Farrelg could you forget even for a single second that the emperor is soooo powerful??
I?m explaining that when it was shot, they didn?t know that Palpatine was a sith Lord and they were caught off guard. It?s a fact, and it hasn?t been changed. I?m not saying that they could have won but the way they freeze always seemed stupid to me, and only know I have realized the sense it makes.

^^ I don't know about that.

I do think they were caught a little off guard. Remember Mace does not entirely belive Anakin, remember what Mace says, " if what you tell me is true then you will have regianed my trust" so Mace really does'nt trust Anakin either. Another thing is, do the 4 Jedi going in there really belive that this could all being going on right under thier noses. Don't you think they would be a little skeptical about not sensing Palpatine.
