i think there's more people worried about someone getting offended than people actually getting offended. one time 3 or 4 years ago i was putting up lights and some teenagers drove by . a girl yelled out that my lights were offending her. she was being sarcastic
yeah i havent heard anyone complaining about merry christmas or christmas decorations. all i hear every year ad nauseum is the deafening whine of right wing christians complaining about everybody else NOT celebrating christmas exactly the way they want them to
As to the "Happy Holidays" "controversy", it's worth pointing out that in the 70s and 80s we used to say that interchangeably with "Merry Christmas", not because some people claimed to be offended by "Christmas" but because it refers to the entire holiday season, which includes New Year's and, for some, Thanksgiving. By extension it also includes Hanukkah and Solstice, and whatever other winter/end-of-year festivals you want to include, without specifying any of them. Some people don't celebrate Christmas, after all, but it's still the time of holidays.
I say this as a Catholic but to those Christians offended by a coffee cup or the phrase Happy Holidays. Maybe you need to reassess your faith because it isn't as strong as you think it is.
Happy Holidays is inclusive, hence should not be offensive(IMHO). re: Starbucks, I understand the cups were plain so that folks could write in what THEY wanted be it "Coffee!" "Merry Christmas" or something else entirely. Freedom to celebrate one's religion of choice or lack of - what's more American? Oh, right, the right of offended Christians (not all mind you, the offended ones) to bitterly complain "their" religious holiday is not properly celebrated. I love lights and trees and all (agnostic here).
One hundred years ago, there was an actual war on Christmas because the leadership in WWI didn't want a repeat of the 1914 ChristmasTruce fraternizing. That's the only war on Christmas we should be offended by, where that breathtaking show of collective humanity and decency was taken as a bad thing by the belligerent powers. Missa ab iPhona mea est.
There's even a place for Santa's sleigh to ride down after he pops down off the roof! Whooosh! Down that sloped driveway and right out into Christmas traffic!
Are they mad because there's a woman front and center and not Jay-Zeus? Nevermind. Read the story. So "Christians" are upset there's no symbols on the cups depicting the season? Yes, get mad at a private company selling over-priced coffee. Get mad you consumerist Christians. I actually think it's a nice gesture they do anything at all. They don't have to. But it's obviously red and green Christmasy colors. I first thought one of those old symbols of a car on previous years' cups was a flying saucer. I prefer the cleaner and nicer aesthetic.
Fundamentalist Christians have been mad at Starbucks for awhile, because they let gay people in their stores or offer them employee benefits or something.
I was going to try to find an article about it, but then I realized I didn't care enough about Starbucks or Fundamentalists to justify it.
Ahh yes, the silent majesty of a winters' morn, the cool chill of the holiday air....and an ******* in a bathrobe emptying a chemical toilet in a sewer.
Ender, I did not. Good question though. I suppose my official answer would be that I discourage decorations of any kind, and racism of all kinds. He probably would have fired me on the spot, though - could I come work for you?
Celebrating the fictitious birthday of a fictitious character by displaying images of other fictitious characters and reading fiction to one another and telling our kids fictitious stories just sums up how awesome humanity is really and the lengths we will go to get a few days off from work and to be able to drink to excess in a socially acceptable way. Merry Christmas!.
Yes, though we don't allow Dem Mozz-lems to decorate their desks with ordinance either. Mostly because we do "activity based working". Sorry.
Most of the things I don't like about Christmas can't be tied to Christianity itself-- the modern Western celebration of the holiday only really dates back to the 19th century. No, the reason I don't like the holiday and the sole reason the "season" starts so early is because businesses want to sell things. I blame Christianity for that like I blame veterans for MATTRESS BLOWOUTS.
i'm glad i can do some early christmas shopping. i don't like crowds so i avoid visiting stores in december.
