My charming Grandfather says it that way due to partial hearing loss and being from the old country.

I once refused to date a girl who pronounced it "sangwich". Can't stand that.

    I drop the "d" when I say it. San'wich.

I also call all soda "coke" even though I'm from the North.

Does *anybody* habitually pronounce the "d" in "sandwich?"

English does not "allow" very many multi-consonant combinations, and the few "friendly" ones follow certain patterns. Compare /str/ /spl/ /spr/ with /mpk/ /rct/ /ndw/. The first set is apparently okay; examples of the second set exist, but tend to get obliterated. Pumpkin = punkin, arctic = ardic, sandwich = sanwich, or sangwich, or . . . whatever. (In case you care, "ng" is considered one sound for speech-related purposes, even though it has two letters in it. So the "ngw" "sangwich" is actually an "improvement" on "ndw"--at least if you're saying it. Maybe not if you're hearing it.)

I'm thinking a sangwhich is something that has been in the cupboard far past the expiration date and the fungi and singing and dancing and making the "wich" turn green.

    Elision FTL!

    but Assimilation FTW

ah, but do you also pronounce the P?

I'd assume so, because P and M are both bilabial, whereas you'd change the M to an N only when you drop the P because of the K and it would actually be an NG instead of an N
and yes, this sentene makes perfect sense :p
