Yunno, Shmi is one of my favorite characters in the saga but I don't see many people wax all enthusiastic about her. I also never see anyone enthuse about the cool lady who plays her, Pernilla August.

I thought she did a good job as an average, albeit enslaved, space mom dealing with an above average space kid and the Jedi who sees something in Anakin she always knew was there.

I also think she's kind of hot, in a middle aged kind of way. I can imagine Kitster telling Anakin "Dude! Your mom is a total milf!"

    Then Anakin would smack him.

I think it's mainly because she doesn't get to do anything "kewl" that gets the fanboy juices flowing like blow things up or swing a lightsaber.

Personally, I love her performance, though.

Yeah, give Shmi a cool set of armor, a jet pack, and have her stand around doing nothing and SHIZZAM!, you got yerself a fan favorite.

    Boba Fett sucks.

I agree, she was very good in the role. She's pretty too. I guess fanboys don't drool over women old enough to be their mother.

As much as I love Natie Portman, I kinda find myself more attracted to Pernella August. I guess I have an Oedipus Complex.

    Cool. :)

She probably didn't get too much publicity or attention because she got caught in the shadow of the other all-star actors/actresses in Episode I such as Ian McDiarmend, Liam Neeson, and Natalie Portman et cetera. :(

I really enjoyed her acting (actually I thought it compensated well for Jake Lloyd's sketchiness).

Too bad Shmi Skywalker didn't recieve any more screen time Episode II. :(

I once read in a review that Shmi's moment of death was "unintentionally funny."

"I once read in a review that Shmi's moment of death was 'unintentionally funny.'"

    That's weird. How so?

Maybe the reviewer just has a weird sense of humor?

Some people thought the way her head flopped down looked too sudden and fake. I wasn't one of them. There were a few giggles in the theater, however.

Eventhough she is the mother of Anakin, I have no need to rant and rave about her performance.

I liked her in TPM but was not a big fan of her in AotC. I am one of the people that thought her delivery (death) was to fake.

She has a following in Europe but most people in America have never even heard about her. I don't rave about her and I know who she is.

Is it me or was there even an action figure of her?

That's because people are used to movie deaths.

But my brother, who is a doctor, said that her death and the way her head fell was as realistic as it can get.

Darth-Mauls-Torso, you should watch Ingemar Bergman´s "Fanny & Alexander", if you haven´t done it already...

YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!
    :p

I've never heard of Fanny and Alexander. What's it about?

Anyway, while I see in this thread that Pernilla has received some love, it's not nearly enough! So to stir up some conversation I read on the Eppy III SA that Pernilla said TPM was her favorite of the Star Wars movies.

    Discuss!

In that case, she gets props from me. It's my favorite, as well.

Yes there is a Shmi action figure.

I really like the character of Shmi and thought that Pernilla did a great job in TPM anyway. Her head falling back in AOTC isn't the best moment. She also looks really scary when she is dead. But she is one of my favorite characters that doesn't fight or anything.

Shmi's death scene was well done, IMO. Especially with the words she tells Anakin before her last breath.

With the context that it has been 10 years since they last seen each other, her words to Anakin are (to me anyway), very touching and heartfelt and so very generous of her.

    "Ani, is that you?"
"My son, my grown up son"
    "Oh, you look so handsome"
    "I'm so proud of you"

This to me is just about everything, any young man would like to hear from their mother. She tells him that he's not only has he grown up but such a joy to behold and he should be proud of things that has been accomplished. The dreams of being a Jedi had come true something he "always dreamed of doing".

    And then the tragedy.

    "Now I am complete"

She knows her time is up, yet is compelled and although in obvious physical pain, to tell Anakin that she loves him. A last word, something Anakin can take with him as a rememberance. It is very unfortunate that, Shmi is unable to finish.

Her head suddenly falling back is simply showing that she's now got no control, and that it's all over. Anakin is now left alone, again with the responsibilities of a Jedi, but that obviously is just too much to take, he clearly loses his way.

It also interesting to me that what Shmi couldn't complete saying to Anakin at her moment of death, Padme does, at the moment of death, or so it seemed.

All this is very vital, IMHO.

"Fanny & Alexander" includes an almost 20 years younger Pernilla August with bare breasts and all. I thought that might interest you. But maybe you prefer her a bit older.

Yeack! I almost feel like a pimp!

    [face_laugh] Space mom. Space kid. 8-}

Pernilla August didn't get a lot of screen time in the STAR WARS Prequels, but she was great in what amount of screen time she did get.

I liked her a lot. I thought she was one of the more pleasent moments of TPM.

In fact, they should have at least had more of her, less Jar Jar. It would have been pointless to do so, maybe, but... come on... like Jar Jar was a major plot device.

(But he was... without him the Gungan diversion...)

    bleh...

    ...bad screenwriting....

I liked August's performance a lot, in both films.
There's a nice chemistry between her and Neeson in particular.
