So sorry to hear of his passing. I met him at a convention in 2012, and he was really friendly and funny. We had a photo op, and the picture had to be taken again because one of us blinked, and we joked about that right after. He seemed to enjoy meeting fans. He was wonderful as Chewbacca and made him an icon. RIP Peter. You'll never be forgotten.
I met him twice. The first time was at a con in NYC many years ago. I didn't have anything signed at the time, but I got to shake his hand; and boy, those hands were ginormous! I thought my hands were big, at least compared to my friends and family, but his absolutely dwarfed mine. The second and more recent time was in December 2016 at Wintercon in Queens, NY. There were a few SW actors attending, but needless to say the line for his autograph was longer than anyone else's by far. I took a picture with him, and got his auto on the package of a small Chewie figure.
This is so awful to hear, except at least he's no longer suffering. He turned what must have been one of, if not the most difficult role to make work in Star Wars, and transformed it into one of the most lovable Star Wars characters of all time, and while I've never met him, everything I've heard points to his own personality reflecting that same warmness and kindness. Someone who was an integral part of the heart of Star Wars itself was lost these past couple days, but at least we can take relief in the fact that he's no longer in pain, and rejoice for the seemingly amazing life he led. RIP Peter Mayhew, the best Co-Pilot a smuggler could possibly have.
That is both beautiful and sad, but it's so true. Mr. Mayhew seemed like a lovely man and Chewbacca was the galaxy's best friend. Rest in peace, sir.
So, I've told this story before but not in a while, but years ago when I was modding Lit we had a dude who was just, like, the biggest Chewbacca fan. Why in Lit? I don't know, but people still like Jacen for some reason so I've learned not to ask. Anyways, this dude was having a really bad year, and it was his birthday. So I PM'd Peter and explained we had a huge fan of his over in Lit, and it was his birthday, and if he wouldn't mind dropping into the Social Thread and wishing him a happy birthday. So of course he did, and added some typed Wookiee roars, because that's just the kind of dude he was. He had absolutely no reason to listen to me, or do it, other than simply that he could and that was the type of guy he was. Made this dude's year. Peter was really a very special man, and he'll be missed.
Goodbye Peter Mayhew, Goodbye Chewie May the force be with you and remember that no one is ever really gone. You will live forever in the hearts of all Star Wars fans
I remember the night Peter started posting on here (and hinting that Chewie would be in Episode III) - That was an amazing night. Just a lovely, lovely man. RIP Peter. Thanks for everything,
It was under his name Peter Mayhew. Everyone was skeptical at the start he quickly won everyone round and it was later confirmed by the then admin that he was indeed *the* Peter Mayhew (think he was given VIP stats etc) Not sure whether his posts/account still exists or whether they got deleted sometime around when he started working on ROTS?
Rip peter mayhew thanks for bringing a beloved character to life with so much heart condolences to his friends and family May the force be with you always
There is a Peter Mayhew account that was registered in 2000 but I have no way of telling if it's him. Looks like there are two posts on it but I can't view them. The account isn't VIP'd.
I thought the account and posts were deleted sometime around ROTS but my memory is getting rather "fuzzy" about these events that happened nearly 15-20 years ago I must admit!
