Second one down. See the announcement thread for justifications even though Super 8 underwhelmed me.

Would quite like an explanation of just what "traditional Star Wars filming" is supposed to be, TBH. :p

Even though I think a lot of his work is overrated, I voted the second option: if he sticks to the script and sticks to Star Wars instead of commercial A-list-ism, it will be fine. I hope.

I think he'll be just fine. Going by my own personal tastes, I haven't really come across anything of his that I haven't liked. I'm a big fan of his Star Trek (one of the only films I've actually made a point to see multiple times in the theater - it was one of those nice surprises. I wasn't expecting much going in and it totally blew me away) and Lost was just amazing. And yes, that includes lens flares and all. People are really blowing the lens flare thing out of proportion. It's starting to get sickening with all the jokes.

The no-sound portion of the opening of ST was the highlight of the film to me. That was amazing.

I'm sure he realises that he's got to make it stylistically coherent with the 6 preceding films.

Abrams was my no 2 choice after Fincher, so I'm really pleased with this. I'm confident he'll at least give us something at an RotJ level of awesomeness.

If John Williams doesn't do it, it could be like the many other movies (and shows, like The Clone Wars) that use his original music along with new music composed by someone else. The Harry Potter and Superman films did it.

And the perfect person to step up to the plate was Giacchino... Lost Music, Orchestral on Prime Time TV Always makes it more Epic, not to mention this...

The music perfect compliments the scene. I am already convinced that Abrams is the next Lucas/Spielberg and Giacchino is the next John Williams

Another bid for Giacchino from LOST

I could go on with his JJ Abrams works or his Pixar works, but the point is Giacchino is definite runner up to John Williams as the composer of EP 7 and ALL of the Sequel Trilogy

Classically framed shots. Simple camera setups and framing. No huge tracking and crane shots.

NO dutch angles and lens flares Mr. Abrams! :p

There's a lens flare in ANH. :D Also, fairly large tracking shots in the same film.

? In the special edition there's a huge cherry picker crane shot when they enter Mos Eisley but notice how out of place it looked. That's because the rest of the camera movement was pretty classical and that shot was added 20 years after. No pretentious stuff.

And yeah, there's ONE lens flare. JJ has lens flares of lens flares.

    So? Still a lens flare.

And I'd submit the no-sound space combat awesomeness of the opening of Star Trek to counter your complaining about lens flares.

I am quite excited by this news! I like Fringe and the Star Trek movie that J.J. Abrams has been involved with, so I am quite interested to see what he will do with Star Wars! I hope we get an official confirmation soon.

Lens flares were traditionally unavoidable because of the light hitting the camera but have been included in animated shots (and animated movies) where there is no actual camera to make a shot look more real or filmic. It is usually barely noticed.
With "traditional STAR WARS filming", instead of flashy camera work, we get good editing. Just remember that some of the filming style of STAR WARS was new in 1977. We're so hypersensitive that fans picked apart filming techniques in the Prequels that were actually used in the Classic Trilogy (smash zooms on Geonosis, also used on Hoth; an elaborate wipe used in ROTS that was used on Yavin) I liked the C-3PO point-of-view shot in TPM when Anakin was leaving because it was a new kind of shot to see in SW, along with new tricks like the duel in the dark between Anakin and Dooku.

As I said before, this is the best Star Wars news since the 1980s. Along with Kathleen Kennedy (a pro) and Arndt (skilled) this shows great promise. Anyone with doubts should at least wait till they see the film. I was negative about milking the cash cow (after the experience that was the prequels) but now I'm enthusiastic. We'll see what's next...

I think Abrams will do a fine job, though Im going into this movie with a open mind, I do not wanna get hyped up because Abrams is directing it...

I went with the second option. While I remain cautious about Abrams helming Episode VII, I have total faith that Lucas/Arndt will deliver an amazing script and as long as JJ stays true to it (which I don't see him having a choice not to) then we'll be looking at an awesome SW movie in 2015. I totally respect the man for taking on two of the biggest franchises in history because that takes guts!

If the movie has a visual style similar to Mission: Impossible III, I won't mind. It's not flashy yet kinetic. So-called "traditional Star Wars filming" consists of several different styles. TESB doesn't look like ANH.

This is absolutely ****ing awesome news, imo. JJ Abrams definitely in my top 5 dream Star Wars directors. Very optimistic now!

Only downside is that in true JJ Abrams fashion, there's gonna be so much secrecy that ****'s gonna be on LOCKDOWN! lol.

At the very least you and every other SW fan on this site that haven't seen LOST need to at least see the 2 hour pilot now just for frame of refrence. If nothing else the first episode, broken into two parts, shows intense and great character development and kicked-off the greatest show in TV history -- I was hooked from the first episode. I'd really recommend watching the whole series . . . There was an episode entitled "Some Like It Hoth," yeah BIG SW fans produced that excellent show.
