I am a Catholic, and even I know the church has made mistakes, being a Native American, the residential schools have still left their mark. Pope John Paul the II is the first Pope in history to acknowledge such mistakes and apologize for them. He was truly a great and enlightened man and the world is now darker for his passing.

Regardless of your faith you have to respect the man himself for always doing what was right.

God bless.

God our Father,
you reward all who believe in you.
May your servant, John Paul II,
our Pope, vicar of Peter, and shepherd of your Church,
who faithfully administered the mysteries of your forgiveness and love on earth,
rejoice with you for ever in heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

He was a great leader, I didn't always agree with his opinions, but in the grand picture of all the work he has done he will truely be missed.

RIP, Pontifex Maximus

Just another non-Catholic chiming in to pay my respects to the man. He was a great leader, a great Christian, and a good human being. May he have the eternal peace he diserves.

I'm not catholic but I thought John Paul II was a cool guy. I felt sorry for him in the last few years as his health deteriorated but he was a real trooper. May he rest in peace.

So who will be the new pope? Is there a "poping" ceremony? I'm not trying to be a smart@$$ I'm just curious about it.

There's about a 9 day mouring period and they have to have the funeral. Then in about two weeks all the electing cardinals will meet behind closed doors till they elect a new leader.

However, as far as I know, he was not a lier or a hypocrite, and always tried to do what he felt was in the best interest of the Church.

He should have done what was in the best interest for the HUMAN RACE and not for the Church.
[/blockquote]

Can I ask why the leader of the Church should be responsible for the human race if the Church is supposedly so bad?

The Conclave will take place in a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of 20. As per new rules created by John Paul II in 1996, if--after 30 ballots are taken--there is not 66% majority, it would be permissible to alter the rules to allow a simple majority. This would take seven days. However, it is predicted that it should go a lot smoother and that the Cardinals are not expected to play political games this time, due to the circumstances.

It is somewhat fitting that the Roman chief priest has the title of Pontifex Maximus, which the Pontifacy still uses. It means "the greatest bridgemaker", transliterated, and that's especially appropriate for one such as JPII, considering all the efforts he's made to mend the burnt bridges between Catholocism and other religions, including the Eastern Orthodoxy and Judaism.

The Papacy is also the last remnant of anything resembling ancient Roman religion, so it also is a special interest to me.

It could, but I don't think it has to be--Catholics, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm actually hoping it won't be, I'll be interested to know what it is. I'm partial to Urban or Pius.

My friend is a good authority on the Papacy--he wrote the entire Wikipedia article on it--and he says that they can chose whichever name they want.

John Paul I, for example, chose that name to honor his two predecessors, John XXIII and Paul VI.
