They should make a Pope John Paul II video game, where he does Matrix moves and stuff.

    The true "Chosen One."

I was just talking with a friend who was complaining about her ex-boyfriend hooking up with her best friend. She was wishing all sorts of dark curses on them and instead of proferring my usual warning about such things being the path to the Dark Side, I invoked the Pope visiting Ali Agca, the man who had shot him in 1981, in prison and forgiving him.

The great thing about the Pope, and about having a pope whether one is Catholic or not, is it gives us a "living human being" whom we can all emulate; not just a transcendent God whom we could never fully emulate.

To bring SW into the picture for a moment, Yoda sort of represents the Pope in that he's the greatest and wisest and most good of all Jedi, and yet (as we'll see most profoundly in ROTS) he's fallible and can make mistakes. That's the way I feel about the Holy Father, as a devout Catholic. He's one of the greatest human beings who's ever lived, but that doesn't entail that he's perfect or without sin or can't make a bad decision, and so I do disagree with him on some issues but nonetheless respect and idolize him and am very sad that he's no longer present with us.

He is now ONE with the Living Force!

It was one of those jewel encrusted Vatican lightsabres.

Goodbye, John Paul II, You were a great man.

Once the Pontiff is elected, he is asked if he will accept the position, If he accepts, then he is asked by which name he is to be called. He selects the name, is anounced to the public as the new Pope (with the chosen name) and he addresses the crowd. No Pontiff has ever chosen the name 'Peter', but it is likely he will take a name from one of the Disciples of Jesus.

No pope has ever chosen "Peter" because it would sound too weird. "Pope Peter."

If I was pope I'd call myself "Pope Dillicus Bang Bang McBeavershaver."

Well I remember reading about a prophecy some nun had about the end. A pope named Peter will lead the church through one of the most troubled times, most likley before the second coming of the Lord. Also mentioned something about two more popes after John Paul. Scary, but I still have hope for mankind.

Actually, there is one more predicted Pope after John Paul, and then it just says that Petrus Romanus is the last - not necessarily that there are none between Petrus and John Paul's successor.

Interesting. It seems John Paul 2 was born during a solar eclipse, as per the "de labore solis" prophecy.

    http://www.catholic-pages.com/grabbag/malachy.asp

If the next one holds, we are to be expecting a pope "Benedict".
    :)

I bet a tenner that whatever name he chooses or whoever he is, someone will inevitably find an association with the "gloria olivae" prophecy, either as a symbol of peace or much more literally:
"That pope...he used to eat a lot of olives when he was a kid"
    :p

Edit: Oh, and the original StBenedict was black. Next pope to be black as well?

I bet another tenner that if he isn't, someone will mention that his great grandfather once had a black neighbour...

John Paul II's motto was de labore solis, "from the labor of the son."

The next Pope's motto is gloria olivæ, "the glory of the olive."

The last Pope's motto is Petrus Romanus, "Peter the Roman." It was also said of the last Pope by St. Malachy: "In persecutione extrema Sacræ Romanæ Ecclesiæ sedebit Petrus Romanus qui pascet oves in multis tribultionibus; quibus transactis, civitas septicollis dirvetur; et Judex tremendus judicabit populum."

Which means: "During the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there shall sit Peter of Rome, who shall feed the sheep amidst many tribulations, and when these have passed, the City of the Seven Hills shall be utterly destroyed, and the awful Judge will judge the people."

JPII's motto was "totus tuus"--"all is yours"

Interestingly, by the Pope's '96 document on what the procedure is for electing the new Pope, whoever is elected is not to refuse election--as he had the liberty to do prior--but the pray for God's grace to help him carry the burden of the papal office.

    A clear, non-vague prophecy....now that's something new!

    Heretic!

The city of the seven hills is actually meant to specifically point at seven hills....err,or maybe seven tall buildings....or seven guys called Hill?

And seven might actually mean 70 or maybe 9. It's to do with sacred numbers and I don't expect you to understand, you heathen!

"City of the seven hills" somehow reminds me of Minas Tirith :p

Heh, clearly the prophecy refers to the LOTR movies!

On the topic of names, another Benedict would be cool.

Other than because Benecict XV is an relative of mine...

Pius and Benedict are possibilities methinks- maybe Leo. Then again- one cannot presume to know what will come out of a conclave. For all we know it could be another Urban, Innocent or something totally new like... Pope Pio!
