sj - Actually, you are mistaken about a great many things. I am on the record for supporting a Pope Lando II long before this thread. I, in fact, advocated a complete reform of the Catholic Hierarchy to deal with all the problems the Church is dealing with and suggested that we call these reforms the "Lando System."
Doesn't Herr Ratzinger give up his political immunity if he leaves office? I assume he's stepping down because he doesn't want to have to deal with the scandals that have plagued the church in recent years, but he opens himself up to potential prosecution for involvement in the Child Abuse scandal if he's no longer protected by Italian Jesus. Look what happened to Berlusconi after all. Also, are we taking bets on what the next Pope will call himself?
Speaking of which, all his trials have been put off until after the upcoming election. Maybe if he loses, they'll make him Pope. He could be Alexander IX.
He loses immunity ratione personae but he still possesses immunity ratione materiae. It's an extremely tricky question of international law whether or not he can be subjected to liability, and it has to do with whether or not his conduct was based on commission rather than omission, whether a prosecuting state is willing to exercise criminal jurisdiction at all, and whether or not personal jurisdiction can obtain (I doubt that the Holy See has any extradition agreements).
It's a nod to JCC history, and I wholeheartedly approve. http://boards.theforce.net/threads/popewatch.26349344/
Oh also, back on the name things... some of my Italian friends are hoping that the next pope is Sixtus VI, because in Italian that'd be something like "Sisto Sesto" or somesuch.
So what happens to Benedict's name when he retires? Does he go back to John Ratizenger or does he remain Benedict for the rest of his life? Also what happens to the newly created Papal Twitter?
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the thousand-year-old Prophecy yet, that this will be the last Pope in Rome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes Oh, and the new Pope definitely needs to dress up like this:
In this uncertain time, who is going to guide bigots the world over in ensuring black Africans get AIDS, and gays feel like second class citizens?
So his successor will bring about destruction? Will he by any chance have the same name? "You think that Rome is safe. It is an illusion. A comforting lie, told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace..."
Heads up to the College of Cardinals. Ratzinger was born the same year as my father-in-law. They're both Catholic. They were both in the Hitler youth and did short stints in the Wehrmacht as teenagers. But my father-in-law is in much better health. Overall, he has all the qualifications to make an excellent Pope.
Catholics prefer to pretend they didn't tacitly endorse the Holocaust at a global level by pointing to the isolated actions of a few clergy as conclusive proof.
So the papacy moves to what? California? Panama? Mexico City? Sal Paulo? Some place warm, don't want the pope to freeze.
My boss, who is the best conspiracy nut ever, has already told me that according to Nostradamus, the next pope will be the "anti-pope."
