Pronunciation "Chimaera"

Yeah, I think reaperfett was joking, knight- construing your words in a fashion which gave rise to a humorous misinterpretation.

 

Don't forget the way an Aust lifestyle commercial pronounced it a few months ago: Kee-mee-leon

That brings the count to three different pronounciations I've heard over the years. The other two have been offered already here in the thread.

Just say it however you want. English is a stuffed up language as it is, a conglomeration of many other dialects. Just like smuggler's argot that Han says in Tyrant's Test with Barth---a mixture of many languages!

 

chameleon and chimaera are 2 different words.

It's a reference to Greek mythology. The Chimaera was a three-headed (lion, goat, serpent), fire-breathing monster that Belopheron defeated by taming Pegasus, flying up to the monster's mouth and inserting an iron rod as the monster was to breath fire, thus melting the rod and killing it. Alternately, in some myth versions, the Chimaera was simply one-headed with the lion's head, a goat's body and a serpent's tail.

It's pronounced khy-mir-ah.

 

Sigh, languages. Thanks to God chimaera (quimera) is a common word in Spanish so I don't have to worry about it.

 

Yeah, I know it's two different words . . . but just saying there may be no "right" pronounciation.

Different locales of the world will say words differently no matter what is "right".

And also to consider . . . the english dialect was vastly different only a few short centuries ago, and will continue to evolve.

 

alright guys just to let y'all know...i've been convinced that i say it wrong. my earlier post was the way i used to say it. dp4...i'm convinced that your pronunciation is right...

 

This is another proof: we need more audio dramas.

 

The audio dramas aren't worth squat for this kinda thing. Anthony Heald pronounces Coruscant "Kor-you-skant".

I'm not sure, but I think people are getting Chimera (the mythological creature) and Chimaera (this ship) mixed up. The latter spelling might be used for the creature as well, but I've always assumed it doesn't have to be pronounced the same way.
