Agreed, a saving of £25.00 is a start, but nowhere near as low as it should be.

Still, The PS3 launch did have a knock-on effect on the X-Box 360 price, as some had predicted. The core unit is now £149.99 from online sellers, and they're offering slightly better package deals for the premium console too.

On a related note, how come the Xbox wireless bridge has a RRP of £59.99? Standard USB Wireless adapters retail for around £20. It's a Microsoft rip-off I tell ya.

Also, if I want to repair my Nintendo consoles and peripherals why can I not get into the bloomin' things? Because you need a special tri-wing screwdriver. Either track one down over the internet or send your stuff off to Nintendo approved repair centres. It's a Nintendo rip-off I tell ya.

    Bring back the Dreamcast.....

what price should it be? cheap enough for anyone to buy, but will bankcrupt Sony?

I don't understand why people have an issue with the price - would you argue that Ferraris should be cheaper? You get what you pay for in this world, and the hardward that runs the PS3 is cheap. It's not going to come down in price (markedly) until the cost of the blu-ray drive comes down (which it won't until unless generic blu-ray players take off - which they won't).

It's a premium games console, at a premium price. There are plenty of indications from the existing games that this console has unbelievable potential, but until third-party developers really push the console it's full potential won't be realised.
(compare early PS2 games with current titles).

The improvement in quality is certainly noticeable on a reasonably sized TV set, however, the improvement (imo) isn't worth the investment in a stand-alone player. It just isn't anywhere near the jump we got from VHS to DVD.

    edit

it's worth making sure that any device you use to 'benchmark' blu-ray actually supports 1080p, and the movie you are watching is shown in 1080p - otherwise you don't have a proper HD experience, and aren't properly viewing what's capable.

They're selling at a loss already, So why not bost sales and go for a price more like £350 or the pound sterling equivalent to the US version (what is it now $499?).

Yes, they sell at a loss, but the value they've decided to sell at is what they've predicted gives the least money-loss to userbase development they can get away with. They could sell the boxes for £50 each, then hope to make money from everyone buying games, but they'd go bankcrupt before regaining the money. So, they go for a value which will develop a userbase, but still bring in money.

The 60Gb unit is $599 in the US, which is about £300. However, this is before sales tax which varies state to state (iirc Nevada doesn't have tax, so buy one in Vegas). As we're all aware the level of taxation in the UK is far greater than the US, so a large part of the increased cost is actually tax, and not money in Sony's pocket.

So far I've heard no one say that their PS3 was a waste of money, or personally know of anyone taking one back for a refund. We still haven't seen a sniff of what the console can do, but it's already blown my socks off.

I downloaded the GTA-IV trailer in 1080 from the playstation store, and really got excited about the quality of the graphics. I can't wait!

It's highly unlikely that anyone who has that sort of money and buys one will say it was a waste or will take it back. But there WILL be a lot of people who just won't be able to afford one and will never get that opportunity to say it was a waste of money.

I'm also shocked at the price for the 360 wireless adaptor, and even the new 360 Elite doesn't have Wi-Fi which is stupid considering the much cheaper Wii & DS have!!
Nintendo have also always had a policy where by they want to have complete control of its products, hence the gamebit security screws to prevent people moding their consoles. It was this policy that also caused the relationship break-down between Sony and Nintendo with the SNES CD-ROM add-on, with Sony using the technology to create the first Playstation as a consequence.

The PS3 is an admirable console, but the way Sony have handlled it is what's got people narked. Forcing people to buy a BLU-RAY player has resulted in poor sales and they could feel the pinch of that very badly if things don't improve in the next 12 months.

    hal - that's a very good point

Tice - I think the sales have been excellent, and the delay in lauch has resulted in there being enough units to have enough for everyone who wanted one. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the games are on blu-ray disks and taking advantage of the increased capacity, so I don't think the blu-ray drive is an unnecessary add-on. We probably haven't seen the full capabilities of the capacity yet, but as developers make games larger I'm sure we will.

anyone downloaded the GTAIV trailer? It honestly looks unbelievable, and I hope the final product lives up to the existing trailer! I downloaded the HD trailer straight from the Playstation Store on my PS3 and watched it that way. (also did a few trailers for upcoming movies). Things seem to download extremely quickly (compared to regular PC internet downloads)

I've seen it but only on the PC Screen. I've heard a lot of people saying how good it looks on a HD screen on PS3.

some of the HD stuff I've seen on the PS3 looks better than HD stuff viewed using my laptop (plugged into my TV, and at the correct resolution). I don't understand why.

I'm getting one! [face_dancing]:D This deal at Play.com is too good to miss, even though i'll probably end up selling Genji and Click on Ebay. I was planning to wait for a price drop but this deal is great plus with my PS2 on it's last legs I need it now. Can't wait to play Motorstorm and RFOM.

Still disappointed that the UK/European version had the dedicated backwards compatibility chip removed.
But all new US and Japanese models will also start being shipped without the emotion chip too.
