What do you guys think about psychology as a major? I like studying psychology, but I don't know what kind of career I could get in psychology.

If your really enjoy the subject then take the class. It would be a good major.

Well, besides psychologist, you could probably get a cool job in the FBI or something like a criminal profiler.

I can't picture myself as a psychologist, but I really like studying psychology.

Out of all my high school classes, psychology was one of the only ones I actually liked.

Maybe you should think about a job you would enjoy having, and then think about what degree's could get you there?

Hey -- I'm majoring in English Literature!! You can get waaaay more jobs with a psychology major than you can with an English major! I say if you like it, go for it! That's the point of a liberal arts education -- majoring in useless stuff we're interested in. :)

I know a bunch of people who are majoring in psych and going on to law school. Just an idea. I'm facing the dreaded decision of picking a major myself.

I'll warn you now. My brother-in-law graduated with a degree in Psychology about 7 years ago.

Psychology related jobs he's had since then: 0. Sometimes he's overqualified, other times underqualified. If you plan on doing something related to Psychology when you graduate, plan on graduate school or a second major that will make you more attractive (Computer Science!).

BTW, my brother-in-law currently works as a reserve rural postal employee. Not exactly what he was picturing when he decided on a Psych major, I'm sure.

I enjoyed my high school Psychology class as well. I find that trying to understand the workings of the human mind (especially my own) to be very interesting stuff.

I'm just starting college, but I decided my interest was too small to devote my studies to a subject that would limit my options in the post-college world. My real deep-seated interest is History, but I have the same misgivings about that one. I'm leaning toward Chemistry.

I used to be a psych major. I had planned on treating identical twins with multiple personalities and charging for each. :p

I wound up in law instead where I found attorneys have more split personalities than most patients in a mental hospital.

I'm now in music, film and computers which is what I am most happy with and what I should have done in the first place.

Follow your heart and the rest will fall into place. :)

My sister is a linguistics major with a minor in psyscology. But she wants to go into speech pathologyy which requires at least an M.Sc. According to her there aren't too many jobs for people with just an undergraduate degree in psych.

Psyc is like any of the other liberal arts type majors. Tons of people have them and never use them for what they intended, psyc, soc, pols, all of those are just degrees.

Really any of those type majors you have to go to grad school of some kind to take on a career in that feild.

If it intrests you do it. Maybe you'll decide you really like it and go to grad school. If you don't at least you've got a college degree. The only degree in my experiance that really gets you any kind of job is an enginering degree of some kind.

I've got friends with Pols degrees that are in law school and I've got friends with Pols degrees that work at Dollar car rentals.
I've got a friend with a buisness degree that works for a bank and I've got a friend with a buisness degree that designs porno adds.

Do it as a minor, not as a major. EVERBODY is getting a degree in psychology today. At least two of my friends who have psyche degrees never did anything with it. There aren't too many job opportunities for an undergraduate psyche degree. You have to have a Masters.

Study computers or communications. That's useful in the job market.

From what I understand from my sister, if you want to do anything in psychology, you must have a masters or doctorate degree. Most good schools only have doctorate programs so you would have to plan on getting both if you aspire to attend the good colleges. Graduate schools also have pretty tough entrance requirements (many applications, few graduate positions) that involves your GPA, GRE scores, and interviews.

The way I see it, if you are really good at anything (a sign that you are really interested in that field), then you will naturally progress through each challenge brought before you. If you are really good at and interested in psychology, then do not let any challenge scare you for you will naturally want to accomplish each goal.

However, if you are in college and you find yourself doing a half-ass job and skipping classes in your field (a psy. major skipping psy. classes); then you may want question your major and career direction, or you will find yourself with an almost worthless degree and no where to go.

I would suggest spending your freshman year undeclared and taking lots of different classes in any and every area that you are interested in. You may find your interests will lead you elsewhere.

A combination of Psych and Computer Science puts you on the road to working on Artificial Intelligence, which is fantastically cool.
