Just announced, it'll be a prequel to Queen's Shadow, and will follow Padmé from the time she became Queen to right around TPM.

Um, OK I suppose, would have preferred a sequel.

Wonder if I can get this in hardback?

EK's just getting in the Star Wars spirit with an original novel, a prequel to it, and then eventually a sequel to both.

I’ve preordered the hardcover on Amazon. It comes out the same day as the new Thrawn book. That’s what happens when Star Wars has two book publishers.

Honestly, I expected this whole backstory thread to have been detailed in a novel as far back as 1999, when I read the details of Naboo and King Veruna in the Episode I Visual Dictionary. I'm glad it is finally getting expanded on with a story.

I know the response to Queen's Shadow was mixed but man oh man, I loved it. I really wish that this was a sequel but I am so on board regardless.

I liked Queen's Shadow (apart from all the fashion talk) so I'll probably get this.

Edit - nothing on Amazon UK yet.

Expect Amazon UK to have the Egmont paperback, not the US hardback.

Yeah - I got Queen's Shadow from the US site due to the crappy UK cover. Might have to do the same for this.

No, it gets the US hardback if you pre order it. I did that with Queen's Shadow. No listing there yet though.

That has been the past pattern but Force Collector seems to be defying it.

Generally though yes, if you can preorder a copy quick, right at the start, the chance goes way up.

    Here's the synopsis.
When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she’ll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test–of themselves, and of each other.

    E.K. Johnston interview.

StarWars.com: There was a lot of excitement around Queen’s Shadow, especially from fans of the handmaidens and Padmé who feel like these characters have been underserved. What did that mean to you?

E.K. Johnston: The excitement and reception were absolutely amazing. I will never forget turning my phone back on when I landed in Chicago for Celebration and getting texts about the bookstore being sold out…and that was a month and a half after it had been released! It was everything I could have hoped for.

StarWars.com: You’re returning to Padmé with Queen’s Peril. What can you tell us about the book?

E.K. Johnston: I AM SO EXCITED. Broadly put, this was the first Star Wars book I ever pitched, way back in 2014. We had to update it a bit since, you know, there’s a been a bit of Star Wars since then.

It’s Padmé. It’s the first round of handmaidens. It’s Naboo. And a lot of it is giving Quarsh Panaka gray hair. Also, the Trade Federation is probably going to show up and cause problems.

StarWars.com: Did the reaction to Queen’s Shadow impact the writing of Queen’s Peril?

E.K. Johnston: Sort of? I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do, but hearing readers be excited about all the dresses and other elements that I loved gave me more space to play going back in.

StarWars.com: What are you most excited about with Queen’s Peril that you might not have had the opportunity to cover in Queen’s Shadow?

E.K. Johnston: Okay, so the whole “I would have sent them to a Backstreet Boys concert” thing started as a half-joke panel answer, but…I got to send them to a Backstreetish Boysish concert. Also, I got to write the Original Six, as it were. I love Cordé and Versé and Dormé, but this was like sitting down with very old friends.

StarWars.com: The Phantom Menace celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and the movie and its characters, including Padmé, seem more popular than ever. What’s your take on that?

E.K. Johnston: It makes me so happy. The prequels are how I found my way back to Star Wars, and the source of most of my fannish relationships, and being able to talk about them so openly is pretty great.

I'm so far behind on my Star Wars novel-reading that I still haven't made it to Queen's Shadow. Maybe I'll hold off a bit longer and then read both of them together in chronological order!

    Nothing can break the Sinny.

    Many have tried, all failed.

    I’m sure it’ll be fine.

I’m not even bothered by Dooku now going back and forth to the Order indecisively.

I do remember when I had a message from someone or other titled something like...

“I think Apocalypse is going to break you, Sinny.”

I just love more Padme, and hopefully more Sabe. @QueenSabe7, here’s hoping!

I'm up for anything in this era in general.
It is such an underappreciated time.

Queen's shadow was overall a very good book, and I'm more into the lore than battles and such.

Though now I am curious which characters will show up.
Obviously Padme and her handmaidens will return.
I also expect Padme's family will reappear.
Hopefully a cameo of Senator Palpatine.

King Veruna is canon, he has shown up in several canon encyclopedia's, and apparently has been established as Padme's predecessor. To be fair he has been ignored by most recent sources, but it would be cool if they pulled a Kapana and have him show up in a cameo after being basically ignored by a previous source. In any case if we are covering Padme's earliest time as queen it would be hard to overlook him without basically rendering him and his entire purpose non canon.

But I suppose that is up to story group to keep track of.
It is a curious thing to speculate about in advance in any case.
