    1. Yoda vs. Sidious (III)
    2. Luke vs. Vader (V)
    3. Obi-Wan vs. Anakin (III)
    4. Luke vs. Vader (VI)
    5. Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan vs. Maul (I)
    6. Obi-Wan & Anakin vs. Dooku (III)
    7. Windu vs. Palpatine/Sidious (III)
    8. Obi-Wan & Anakin vs. Dooku (II)
    9. Yoda vs. Dooku (II)
    10. Obi-Wan vs. Vader (IV)
    11. Obi-Wan vs. Grievous (III)
    12. Qui-Gon vs. Maul on Tatooine (I)

First three are all masterpieces the way I see it. Barring something really special from the sequel episodes, those three will always be up there. I can see myself arranging 4th to 7th in a different way, this is just my current ranking. And 8th to 12th are there just because they don't make me feel the deeper emotions that others do, otherwise they are all well crafted.

PS: I think it's an interesting infographic for those who haven't seen it yet (maybe it can even be moved to the original thread post):

    The good:

Luke vs. Vader (VI) The emotional impact is off the charts here. I get chills every time Luke comes out of the shadows with that musical piece playing. The main cookie though is when Vader throws Sidious down the shaft. One of the most powerful moments ever captured on film.

Luke vs. Vader (V) Again heavy on the emotional impact, but on rewatches the "Im your father" thing kinda brings it down because the moment is so reliant on surprise. Everything before that is good though with Vader showing how badass and superior to Luke he is. When he comes charging out of that small hallway out on the platform is truly menacing.

Qui Gon, Obi vs. Maul (I) Perhaps the best opening to a duel of all time. Maul igniting his saber with that music is the epitome of cool. Extremely well choreographed and the end also brings some good, raw emotion out. My favorite part of the duel is Obi and Maul going at it solo. So many good looking moves and intensity. Also special in that we never see Obi Wan fighting in this way again.

Anakin vs. Dooku (III) Finally we get to see what Anakin can do. We only get 30 seconds, but everything after and including that saber lock is gold, especially those last swirling moves before he takes Dookus hands. Could have lasted a little longer though.

Obi, Anakin, Yoda vs. Dooku (II) My problem with the prequel duels is usually that there isn't enough taunting. Here we get it in droves. Obi Wans departure is once again disappointingly quick, but the way Anakin enters the fight is really good, but also this too short. When it comes to the actual saber battle Yoda wasn't that cool, but the force battle he has with Dooku more than makes up for it. Iconic moment when he enters the cave and starts owning the Sith Lord.

Yoda vs. Sidious (III) This is like a greatest hits album isn't it? Both Yoda and the Emperor going at it in their full glory, with some brilliant taunting to boot. Sidious is just marvelous throughout. The force lightning battle they have at the end is maybe the most badass display of power from two combatants I've ever seen.

    The bad:

Vader vs. Obi Wan (IV) There is emotional currency here, some will say a lot, but for me it just isn't enough to make up for the unappealing choreography. It's basically two old dudes crossing light swords a few times before one of them gives up his own life. Now with the prequels it does gain some additional weight, but still.

Mace and posse vs. Sidious (III) I actually felt embarrassed on behalf of the movie here. McDiarmid and Jackson are simply not very athletic and the whole thing ends up looking amateurish and stale. The latter part of the duel when Palps is on the floor is good, but everything before that just isn't up to the standards it should be. I certainly don't get the feeling we are watching two of the most skilled force users in the galaxy go at it here.

Vader vs. Obi Wan (III) Should have been the best duel both technically and dramatically. Pretty much fails in both departments. The first third is good, but once they enter the control room it starts getting silly and superfluous. It picks up again when they fight on the lava thingies and the final saber lock before Obi Wan jumps to the shore looks really good. Perhaps the only time the point is carried across that this Vader dude is really powerful and badass. The dialogue throughout is not very good, sometimes plain terrible. Then the final moment is executed more or less in the worst way possible. Looks like Vader jumps to his death because the running time of the movie calls for it. Yes, we know he did a bold move that didn't work out, but that is not very well presented on screen. To a normal person it looks silly for someone to simply jump into an opponents blade when he has so many options available to him. Some more and better dialogue could have fixed this, but alas we are left with what we have.

    1. Luke vs. Vader (V): Wow, wow, wow! This is a lightsaber duel with amazing emotional impact and amazing fight choreography. I have seen this fight over a dozen times and still get excited for it each time I watch ESB.
    2. Luke vs. Vader (VI): Perhaps the most emotional duel in the whole saga. Depending on my mood, this is No. 1 to me (it switches with the other Bespin duel).
    3. Obi-Wan vs. Vader (III): The first third is amazing, the last minute or so is terrific ("You were my brother, Anakin"), but this fight did not need to be so overly choreographed. All that being said, I still love this duel.
    4. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul: There is very little going on here emotionally because we know very little about Darth Maul. Still, the actual choregraphy is really cool.
    5. Yoda vs. Palpatine: A lot of ridiculousness, but it is so cool to see the Grandmasters of the force face off.
    6. Obi-Wan vs. Vader (IV): This fight gets far too much flack. Sure it is claustrophobic and slow, but I really love the tension and emotional impact of Obi-Wan's fall.
    7. Obi-Wan and Anakin vs. Dooku: Nothing phenomenal, but I like when Anakin starts hammering Dooku.
    8. Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Yoda vs. Dooku: This is a fight that mostly gets worse as it goes on. The Obi-Wan vs. Dooku section is the best (the taunting, etc), and then it gets very ridiculous with Anakin and Dooku's lightsaber twirling. It all culminates to Master Yoda turning into Sonic the Hedgehog and letting out a battle cry to attack Dooku.
    9. Windu and Cannon Fodder Jedi vs. Palpatine: Mace Windu has a cool fighting style, but Palpatine is just ridiculous in this fight.
    10. Obi-Wan vs. Grievous : It's ok if people really like this one, but there is almost nothing going on here of substance.

Anakin VS. Obi-Wan ROTS, I'm immensely impressed Hayden and Ewan did all that choreography themselves and how well they pulled it off.
Luke VS. Vader ROTJ, altogether, it's the one that feels the most emotional of the old trilogy, because Luke knows he's fighting his father and his loud shout of "Never!" just makes it for me.
Luke VS. Vader TESB because it shows you, just because Anakin's half machine and slow doesn't make him a pushoever, there's a reason why he's still the scariest villain around.
Duel of the Fates, has my favorite music and still looks great.
Yoda VS. Dooku, it made me simile to see the old wise master whoop his former student.

Apologies for F.I.T.S. BUT with the Lightsaber duels - do the Clone Wars Lightsaber Duels count? Or strictly just films?

Given surely wouldn't these also do nicely:

-Savage Oppress vs Count Dooku vs Asajj Ventress

-Palpatine 'Trollinating' Darth Maul and Savage Oppress ...

-Savage Oppress vs Anakin vs Obi-Wan Kenobi

-Darth Maul and Savage Oppress vs Obi-Wan Kenobi and Asajj Ventress

-Anakin vs Barris Offee ... she did put up some fight before being apprehended and disarmed ...

    -Ahsoka vs General Grievous ...

-Ahsoka and Luminara Unduli vs Asajj Ventress

-Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Pre Visla ...

-Pre Visla vs Darth Maul ...

And interesting how people don't like Master Yoda fighting; I mean HE IS THE GRANDMASTER SUPREMO JEDI OF THE JEDI ORDER MAN! Ofc he is expected to use his Powers if necessary ... otherwise he would have been dead sooner than later ...

Then again I wonder HOW Palpatine was able to develop his Lightsaber skills when Darth Plagueis wasn't always 100% keen on Lightsaber duels ...

    1. Luke vs Vader (ESB) - Great choreography, great character interaction, great dialogue. So much more than just swinging away.
    2. Luke vs Vader (ROTJ) - More of the same after ESB.
    3. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon vs Maul (Duel of the Fates) - Technically the best choreography. Outstanding physical performances from Ray and Ewan. Liam, too. Great Force mystique with Qui-Gon's meditation and Obi-Wan's Force moment.
    4. Yoda vs Palpatine - The true epic duel in ROTS, imo, vastly outshining Anakin vs Obi-Wan. Great imagery. Huge stakes. A hero comes up short.
    5. Yoda vs Dooku - Just great fun. The Grandmaster shows off his mastery of the Force.
    6. Obi-Wan vs Vader (ANH) - Good character interaction and mystique. Great ending. Choreography is a bit tame, but it's better than many people think, imo. It's more "realistic" in a way, looks like kendo. Lots of flicks and jabs, straight to the point, going for the throat.
    7. Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku (AOTC) - Not much to write home about. Obi-Wan vs Dooku is unremarkable. A nice bit of team work when Obi-Wan throws his lightsaber to Anakin. Anakin dual wields. Nice uses of shadows and the light from the lightsabers and I like the focus on their faces. Good dialogue.
    8. Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku (ROTS) - Again, Obi-Wan's part is a bit lame. Hayden muscles up too much and overswings, but from the moment he decides to put it on Dooku it's pretty impressive, especially when he gets inside Dooku's guard. Good dialogue. Obi-Wan/Anakin camaraderie (this time, we'll do it together). Anakin sounds like Vader. (My powers have doubled since we last met, Count.) Dooku's response is great. (Good. Twice the pride, double the fall).
    9. Obi-Wan vs Anakin (ROTS) - What a total mess and total disappointment. Just an endless, meaningless fiasco of robotic, overly choreographed lightsaber waving. Horrible dialogue, horribly delivered. Turns into an unintentional comedy.
    10. Obi-Wan vs Grievous - I like the buzzsaw and Obi-Wan's attempt to gauge it. I like the brawl. The chase is a mess. Comes off as superfluous.
    11. Mace Windu vs Palpatine - Just very poor choreography, and poor performance of it. Looks terrible.
    12. Qui-Gon vs Maul - It's just too short to rank anywhere other than the bottom. Still, it's faster and more intense, and I love Liam's overwhelmed reaction when he escapes. He makes it seem quite dire, perhaps more dire than the duel actually appeared, like he was moments away from being overwhelmed and killed.

I could flip 1 and 2, 4 and 5, and 7 and 8, but the rest is definite.

    1. Luke vs Vader (ROTJ) - Extremely intense battle with emotions running high between father and son, also the with the Emperor in the background egging on Luke to give into his anger.
    2. Luke vs Vader (ESB) - Exciting confrontation between Luke and Vader showing how naive and inexperienced Luke is, while revealing who Darth Vader really is.
    3. Obi-Wan vs Vader (ANH) - While not the most intense battle its an emotional one between Master and apprentice and is our introduction to what a lightsaber fight is.

The rest don't exist... Just kidding but the Prequel lightsaber duels miss the point completely of what a lightsaber duel is supposed to be. They are all flash and no substance. I enjoy them as nice eye candy but there's no reason to be invested in these duels other than at a superficial level. I do enjoy the Prequels but that's my opinion on the duels.

    14. Kylo Ren vs Finn and Rey
People swinging sticks at each other. Not really a duel.
    13. Darth Vader vs Cin Drallig
Not really a duel, but it at least had skill.
    12. Luke vs Vader on Dagobah
    Slow-motion dueling, extremely short.
    11. Ben Kenobi vs Darth Vader
Finally, a real duel! But it really does come down to two people gently poking with each other with sticks.
    10. Qui-Gon vs Maul
Tatooine was an awful place for a duel. This duel is also short and insignificant, but it is skillful.
    9. Luke vs Vader(Empire Strikes Back)
An extremely overrated duel. It lacks impressive choreography and music.
    8. Luke vs Vader(Return of the Jedi)
The best thing I can say about this overrated duel is that it was the best fight in the original trilogy.
    7. Obi-Wan vs General Grievous
Hands down the worst fight in ROTS, unless you count #13. But, still exciting.
    6. Anakin and Obi-Wan and Yoda vs Dooku
A bit too much like a dance, but better over-choreographed than under-choreographed.
    5. Yoda vs Palpatine
The force-dueling is overrated, but that moment when they rise, dueling, into the Senate chamber is epic.
    4. Mace Windu vs Palpatine
The turning point for Anakin. The fighting was a bit under-choreographed for the two best duelists ever, though. But still awesome.
    3. Anakin and Obi-Wan vs Dooku
Awesome choreography, especially at the end. The fighting alone earns the duel the #3 spot.
    2. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Maul
Epic. Awesome choreography. The 2nd best soundtrack in Star Wars. This duel is nearly perfect.
    1. Vader vs Obi-Wan
This duel is perfect. The emotion, the stakes, the choreography, and the fighting...as well as the best soundtrack in Star Wars: "Battle of the Heroes".

Time for an update, I guess.

I suppose I would put the duel in TFA at #9, and push back the rest.

I don't have much positive to say about the duel in TFA. The reason it ranks above the very bottom is because it lacks the negatives listed in numbers 9, 10 and 11 above.

    Perfect (or nearly perfect) Duels
1.) Luke vs. Vader (TESB): It has the perfect mood, a dynamic environment, nice choreography, and emotional substance which itself varies & changes as the duel goes on. And the father reveal at the end caps off the perfect duel.
2.) Luke vs. Vader (ROTJ): I think this one has higher highs than their TESB duel (like when Luke snaps & that haunting Williams music plays), but I don't think it overall reaches the perfection of the former. Still an excellent duel though and one that is highly personal.

    Epic Duels
3.) Yoda vs. Sidious (ROTS): This was short but great. I don't care about the super-fast choreography here as much as I do what this duel means. It's basically the ultimate evil guy vs. the ultimate good guy pulling off all sorts of over-the-top moves. And given that context, I think it works well, especially with Duel of the Fates accompanying it.
4.) Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon vs. Maul (TPM): There's some nice choreography here (though sometimes over-the-top). This again had a pure good vs. evil vibe, and there's always something epic about that. On a personal level though, there was no dynamic between the Jedi & Maul which kind of brings it down. On the other hand, it was nice to see Obi-Wan's raw emotion come into play after Qui-Gon dies. Musically, Duel of the Fates is again a real winner.

Duels with great plot or character relevance (but don't necessarily have great choreography)
5.) Mace Windu (and posse) vs. Sidious (ROTS): This moment had weight behind it as we saw Palpatine finally reveal his true Sith self. His change in voice inflection & that menacing scream he lets out are nice touches. And while the choreography itself leaves something to be desired, it's a significant enough moment to earn this spot.
6.) Rey & Finn vs. Kylo Ren (TFA): This was good because it had nice character moments, like Rey finally tapping into the Force and Kylo realizing that he might not be as powerful as he thought he was. The choreography is kind of haphazard though, but that's to be expected from an injured Kylo & an untrained Rey.
7.) Obi-Wan vs. Vader (ANH): This was more about the gravity of the moment itself, rather than the choreography of the duel. There was some good (if not vague) dialogue that hinted at their backstory. And Obi-Wan allowing himself to get struck & disappear was a powerful moment both because of the message he was sending to Vader and because of Luke's subsequent emotional reaction.
8.) Qui-Gon vs. Maul on Tatooine (TPM): This was short & sweet. There were lots of closeups so we couldn't really get a good sense of the choreography. But I think the purpose was to set up Darth Maul as this powerful force of nature who can just leap around & whirl his lightsaber around at incredible speeds. The wind & sand blowing up were nice touches and really added to the chaotic feeling.

The Duels that try to have weight behind them but don't pull it off that well
9.) Obi-Wan & Anakin vs. Dooku (ROTS): The choreography is good when it's just Anakin left. But overall, the attempts to make it more personal kind of fall flat either because of the dialogue or the delivery (I'm really not sure which it is). I do like the ending where Palpatine convinces Anakin to kill Dooku; I legitimately liked that part.
10.) Obi-Wan vs. Anakin/Vader (ROTS): The choreography is too over the top and (at times) not possible to follow (probably due to a combination of closeups, both blades being blue, & dark lighting). Most of the duel just seems like spectacle and I actually get bored through much of it. It's not all bad though, as Obi-Wan's speech after the duel is over is pretty good & emotional. I just wish the duel itself had that level of substance.
11.) Obi-Wan & Anakin vs. Dooku (AOTC): The choreography wasn't good and the characters basically had no dynamic with each other. And even though Dooku's role is analogous to being Obi-Wan's grandpa (Master of his Master is analogous to father of his father), this doesn't really come into play during the duel because Dooku, at most, only ever taunts Obi-Wan about his poor dueling prowess.
12.) Yoda vs. Dooku (AOTC): The choreography is too over-the-top, Yoda looks too cartoony, and there's no dynamic between Yoda & Dooku. There is an attempt to make this personal by having Yoda be Dooku's former Master, but that again doesn't ever come into play other than them taunting each other about how the other is not really that powerful ("I've become more powerful than any Jedi...even you" and "Much to learn you still have").

The Duel that is just bad
13.) Obi-Wan vs. Grievous (ROTS): In terms of choreography, it's really bad. It seems like they wrote themselves into a corner here because there's no real way for someone with one lightsaber to duel a guy who has four. And so, there are a lot of closeups in which the lightsabers & Grievous' various arms swinging around are attempting to hide the choreography. It even looks like one of the close-up Obi-Wan shots was re-purposed from his Mustafar duel (one where he's balancing on that Lava surf board). And bad choreography aside, there's again nothing that's really going on between the characters and so it doesn't really have any gravitas behind it.

    1. Luke vs Vader (TESB) - Easily my favorite duel. Incredible use of lighting, music, and effects to create a dramatic and tense fight. The buildup and ending revelation make this duel even more memorable. Some of the best moments of this duel don't even involve lightsabers clashing - such as when Luke travels through the dark hallway hearing only the sound of Vader's breathing. I really could go on and on. Just goes to show that there can be more to these action scenes than just pretty choreography.
    2. Luke vs Vader (ROTJ) - Awesome duel with a lot of emotional weight and nice imagery. The way the music swells as Luke unleashes his anger on Vader is simply incredible.
    3. Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon vs Maul - In terms of pure cool factor this duel would win easily. Unfortunately it lacks much depth (Also where was the trashtalking?). Still I have to admit it's pretty epic to see Darth Maul with his double lightsaber take on two jedi at once accompanied by that awesome music by John Williams.
    4. Finn & Rey vs Kylo Ren - Rugged and gritty, more like how a fight should be. The visual of the trees being chopped down gave each swing of the lightsaber a deadly feel.
    5. Obi-Wan vs Vader (ANH) - Yeah the choreography hasn't aged so well and some of the lines are pretty goofy. Call me nostalgic but this duel just has a classic charm to it and there's enough emotional weight to keep me interested. The sacrifice at the end adds an extra emotional punch.
    6. Obi-Wan vs Vader (ROTS) - How dare I rank this under their other duel! But seriously it could have been so much better. The emotional setup was there, but it went on too long and tried to be too over the top.
    7. Yoda vs Sidious - I don't dislike this duel, but I can't help but feel that it would have been so much better without the lightsabers.
    8. Anakin & Obi-Wan vs Dooku - It's purpose seems to be to showcase how much Anakin has grown and his fall to the dark side. It accomplishes that pretty well.
    9. Anakin, Obi-Wan, & Yoda vs Dooku - It's ok but the first two duels feel woefully short. They seem to just be there to set up the Yoda entrance. I still feel like I'd prefer Yoda without a lightsaber but whatever... The line where Yoda mentions that Dooku is his old apprentice seems shoehorned in to give the duel some emotional weight that it sorely lacks.
    10. Windu vs Sidious - Meh
    11. Obi-Wan vs Grievous - CGI fest. Lacks much weight or tension. I didn't take Grievous seriously before the duel and Obi-Wan takes his 4 lightsabers out so effortlessly that it seems like a silly mismatch. Then we have a drawn out chase scene (yay..). The whole scene feels like a typical filler action sequence.

    1. Anakin/Darth Vader vs. Obi-Wan- Amazing fighting and incredible locations.
    2. Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker (ESB)- The best paced duel of the OT and actually pretty good choreography.
    3. Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan- Best choreography of the saga.
    4. Obi-Wan vs. General Grievous- I quite enjoy this one. Especially the fist fight and hand to hand combat.
    5. Anakin/Obi Wan vs. Dooku (ROTS)- Fun rematch and a cool way to start ROTS off with a bang. The Anakin vs. Dooku segment especially is great.
    6. Yoda vs. Palpatine- Awesome duel and force power fight.
    7. Kylo Ren vs. Rey/Finn- wasn't an impressive fight but the strongest part of the film imo.
    8. Dooku vs. Obi-Wan/Anakin/Yoda- I wish the cut scenes were left in. Obi-Wan's part is great and so is Yoda's. Anakin's part is disappointing.
    9. Palpatine vs. Mace- Not good choreography for PT standards but the dramatic tension is there.
    10. Luke vs. Vader (ROTJ)- Choreography is ok, too many cuts between this and the Endor battle.
    11. Vader vs. Obi-Wan (ANH)- Dull to me. Choreography aside, no emotional impact or imprint left on me from this.
