Do you ever get this strange feeling that Europe really likes him?

 

Eh, maybe it's payback for that 'Springtime for Hitler' thing?

 

Yeah, those are the two most German names I've seen in my entire life.

On the one hand, Europe loves to take potshots at the United States, they often claim that we don't have anything original in our culture and some will go to great lengths to point these out in painstaking detail. On the other hand, Europe seems to have a permanent erection for anything the comes from the United States (Coca Cola, jeans, movies, cheeseburgers, Presidents, etc) and will sometimes go to great lengths to buy those items or sell knock offs of said items while ignoring their own rich cultures all together.

I'm rambling at this point, so I'll just ask "What the hell, Europe? Either you love us or you hate us, but could you please just choose one way or the other and stick with it?"

As I've seen various American posters point out about their own country (even though Europe is not a country, but a continent) ... Europe is quite big, has a big population and thus you can find anything. The people that critize the US in such detail are not the same people that 'love' everything about the USA.

Also, I think the Obama love in Europe is sort of overrated. The general feeling is that he's an incredible improvement compared to W. , but I don't think anybody is actually expecting miracles.

As for the 'love us or hate us' ... I'm sorry, the world is a complex place, and I think we'll continue to do both. It's kind of like Italy and Berlusconi I suppose .

My earlier post was meant to be somewhat sarcastic - c'mon, both the US and Europe hate each other, if we both loved each other then each would lose a very good butt of jokes.

 

Heh, if you want US - Europe hate, you should read the 'Hewitt's Europe' blog on the BBC ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/gavinhewitt/ ) Especially the MarcusAureliusII character kind of takes the whole 'hate you!' thing a bit too far.

 

His comments are of entertaining value though.

They are. The only thing that's annoying is that the blog has this propensity (helped along by him) to degenerate into an eternal rehashing of WWII. I bet Godwin was reading it when he thought up his law.
