The adding in Hondo was a distraction more than anything else, was as if the main cast can't carry the payload themselves and they needed Jack Sparrow. It is unclear why this old lady had to wait nearly 20 years to go traveling. If all the Honor Guards carried the weapons why not escape the planet sooner, why didnt Zeb know better since he was a Captain of the Guard he was apparently trained not just physically but mentally and spiritually. Sure he was broken after the war, but why would he devolve into a generic thug and cartoonish child-like buffoon. I never really got a sense Zeb was militaristic but more a simpleton and savage brute with a good heart added in for comic relief as a large percentage of this show was based on humor and not just SW humor but Indiana Jones style humor but I think it more mirrors Hercules and Xena and Brisco County in campy genre humor. This episode needed more depth as did Zeb. Especially since it touched on some serious subject matter like extinction, genocide and survival. Coupled with Zeb mindset and something beyond science and out understanding, faith and the presence of God but its disguise as spiritualist and some new age stuff which comes off as awkward. Its not clear if Zeb was on some level Force sensitive in a way we understand it for decades, or if the bo-rifle transformer carries inside it a kyber crystal. Kanan and Ezra joining Zeb seems to show something we saw previous with them joining Ahsoka in using the Force. The Force was clearly powering the staff which also screams LOTR and a little of the Staff of Ra from Raiders.

The story was as weak as the usual filler. I give it a 4.

Yeah, she did. It's still the role I most associate her with, too. And Green Lantern Aya, still pissed they cancelled that, damn it... :p

I think that's the wrong angle to come at things from, personally. Overlooking the obvious out-of-universe necessity of fleshing out Zeb's character further by allowing him to confront the demons he'd been carrying with him, the rescue's in-universe value is that it's exactly the sort of tactically unimportant yet vitally necessary humanitarian work that should be at the core of the budding Alliance to Restore the Republic [and All That It Stood For]. Rebels isn't just about the vague sense of the rebellion itself, but the people who comprise it, and it's important to acknowledge that for all the military build up that's been happening this season, the Ghost crew are still the kind of people who will go out of their way to aid those in need simply because they are in need. They're not repeating the mistakes of the Republic military and the Old Jedi Order, neglecting the needs of the common folk in order to attend to the "greater good," but rather fostering a greater good through smaller acts of kindness that ultimately better the state of the galaxy alongside the larger fight.

This episode was more interesting than I was expecting it to be.

I'm guessing Hondo's the fool. Or maybe the roles were interchangeable.

    Next episode's already looking interesting.

There are two reasons. The first is good PR. Good PR gets people on your side. Secondly is recruitment. Either recruitment of those you are rescuing or recruitment via good PR. Basically if people think you are looking out for them and their kind, or are trying to protect those in need they are more likely to support your cause either secretly or openly.

The music saved this episode for me. Watching Cad Bane episodes from TCW today was probably a mistake because after that this episode really bored me.

My question is, did Zeb "use" the Force?

The episode, in my opinion, strongly hinted at it. Kanan and Ezra put their hands on Zeb in a similar way that Kanan put his hand on Ahsoka in SOL when channelling the force.

He states that he can "see" the way through the maelstorm and then makes the jump to hyperspace...the only way to "see" the way would be through the Force.

Well, I didn't go in with much expectations to be honest, but it was pretty cool and got better as it went on. I liked the Zeb backstory and hope they do more with it somehow. Hondo appearances are always cool too. Now was it the best? Maybe not. I don't think it was as good as the past 2 but still solid.

    Worst episode to date.

I'm noticing a pattern with Rebels, now; there is a clear failure to give enough time to plot exploration and new lore. Everything is rushed. I honestly now fear for any potential inclusion of Maul and Malachor - do not trust Rebels to present either in a coherent manner.

    3/10.

I actually like how Rebels wraps storylines up quicker than TCW did. TCW had a habit of dragging storylines out.

Also wasn't Ashla the name they were originally going to give the Ahsoka type character for Filoni's original pitch of TCW?

Ashla is what the ancient Jedi refereed to as the Light Side of Force back in the pre-days of the Galactic Republic. The Force was discovered on Tython.

Actually I looked it up after I posted it and it was infact the original name for the Ahsoka type figure for Filoni's original pitch.

Yes, but it was mentioned in Star Wars lore long before that.

And who knows if Filoni got the name from that or not. Ashla was also a moon as well as a little Togruta girl from Ep. II. (though I don't think she has an actual name in canon).

Another 30 minutes of watching Star Wars where I'm at a loss. Such a rushed, awkwardly paced story. Zeb thinks he's the last surviving member of his species, only to find two others, and then he treats them like they are idiots and an embarrassment, before rather abruptly believing this whole prophecy. Meanwhile Hondo is just kind of there as a familiar TCW face to moves things forward quickly as the informant that leads the Rebels to the Lasat and then the Empire to the Rebels.

I don't know who makes these creative decisions, if it's Filoni, the writers, or if there's some order from someone above Filoni that is anti-arc and likes standalone episodes, but I feel like in TCW they had learned as time went on that the 22 minute time frame was not adequate to tell a decent story. And the times that Rebels has done arcs, whether it was Siege of Lothal or the last few episodes of Season 1, they have been done well.

I usually blamed Lucas if anything, for the dud episodes of TCW, since most episode ideas originated with him. But I guess most of the good ones originated with him too.

I don't know whether to fault the writers for bad story telling; to fault the director for setting the writers up for failure by expecting them to cover a potentially complex and multi-faceted story in 22 minutes; or if someone higher up like has tied Filoni's hands in the same way that Lucas sometimes did on TCW.

But I feel like something has got to change. It's been week after week of blandness. And I might have written it off as a bad team, if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of these writers and Filoni have proven track records of doing good work. So, I'm just at a loss as to how the ball is getting dropped with the Star Wars IP by this team.

Ashla (and Bogan) originated from SW early scripts.

I enjoy the way the story is being told. Nothing was worse than some of those four episode arcs in TCW where you had to sit through average to poor stories for not just one week but four. This way is if you aren't a huge fan of the story you don't have to sit through it for a months worth of episodes.

Interesting; many did not like this episode.

It was one of my favorites. First off I'm a sucka for legends and prophesies. Hondo was great. The music and cinematography reminded me of a space epic like 2001.

When Kanan and Ezra put their hands on Zeb to help the Ashla flow through him....great stuff.

The thing is, there were many good examples of single episodes in TCW so I don't think you need a 2 or 4 parter to tell a good story and they should be able to do it as a show.
Ahsoka herself with Storm over Ryloth is a good example of that.

This was probably one of my favorite episodes of the season so far. I really enjoyed it. Zeb got a lot of character development with this episode, and that was very much needed. However.... I have an urging feeling Zeb might die soon. His arc is kind of over. I dont know what they can explore with him next.

In all fairness, there were plenty of instances (covered by TCW episodes and whole arcs) where the Republic traveled to neutral systems to protect those innocent planet inhabitants still caught in the crossfire. It's not like it's never been done before the Rebellion.

My favorite episode. (sort of unsurprising since Zeb is my favorite character on the show)

    A few things-

I couldn't tell if Zeb really couldn't recognize Gron or remember being a captain—as a possible result of PTSD— or if he was playing it off because he just didn't want to remember these things.
Zeb did hint that he knew Chava but didn't actually say how. Darn. Was she a palace regular? Maybe a spiritual advisor to the king or something? I can see her pestering the guards with her kooky old lady antics. The crazy wall-eyed stare she got every once in a while was hilarious.

I was afraid for a second there that Zeb was going to sit on the floor and chant, which might have been a little cringe-worthy to me, but he didn't. Whew.

I liked the scene between Zeb and Ezra. Zeb actually seemed like he was going to cry for a moment there and then contained himself. Great voice acting from Mr. Blum.

Zeb's rifle being used as a divining rod to find the original homeworld was kind of trippy and cool. I guess Lasan-Malamut firearms corp. puts crystals or something into every soldier's weapon for this purpose?

Ezra and Kanan laying hands on Zeb and making a force circuit— lovely.

Pretty fun stuff when the lightning was flying and the music was swelling and we get a zoom in on Zeb's forehead/inner eye chakra as he 'breaks through' with his vision.

No more lasats? I guess I shouldn't be greedy, but I really wanted to see them.
