Really? I happen to think Order 66 is a very moving scene. The Jedi have already lost. They lost the moment Anakin cut Mace's hand off. Windu's lightsaber falling down into the depths of Coruscant represents the fall of the Jedi Order itself. The might Dark Lord of the Sith is cutting down all his enemies at once through his proxies. A single command is given and all the Light in the Force goes out at once. All the Jedi die at once and the Emperor cackles in delight as his long-awaited victory is realized.

    Noble Plo Koon
    Courageous Aalya Secura
    Wise Ki-Adi-Mundi
    Compassionate Stass Allie
    And ten thousand other Jedi

All gone. Ashes and dust in a single day.

Order 66 was sad because of what it represented to the viewer.

I'm getting so sick of seeing Vader with his mask damaged/blown off by some explosion.

It might look super cool (even I bought the battle damaged Vader action figure from The Force Unleashed, even though I didn’t play TFU until years later), but every time somebody uses that gimmick, it just contributes to the weakening of Vader.

TFU was eight years ago. The same thing happened in the Purge comic... 11 years ago. How is this "gimmick" frequent enough to be a tired trope, exactly? ;)

I understand the grasp of the concept; but it still didn't get to me like certain scenes in TCW. Ahsoka's leaving the Council. Satine being killed by Maul in front of Obi-Wan. Fives' death.

I seem to gravitate towards villains more than heroes [face_devil]. I did tear up at Satine's death scene.

"Remember, my dear Obi-Wan. I've loved you always. I always will."

Even Savage feels a bit bad for Obi-Wan in that scene. Speaking of Savage, his death scene always makes me more misty-eyed than Satine's.

"Brother. I am an unworthy apprentice. I'm not like you...I never was."

Poor Savage, he never asked for any of this. He'd have been happy living his simple life on Dathomir with his fellow Nightbrothers. Ventress and Talzin turned him into a monster. At least he gets a few moments as his old self before he dies.

Um...are you sure? I recall him smirking as Maul pulled out the darksaber and pulled Satine over to him.

I would say Maul struck at Kanan also because he was Ezra's first master, and an apprentice cannot serve two masters. Kanan as a Jedi Knight would also have a duty to strike down Ezra if he turned to the Dark Side per the Jedi way of destroying the Sith and their disciples. So Maul is also protecting his potential prospect , "Ezra will be mine". I am reminded of Palpatine greeting Anakin on Naboo at the end, and right there you know that one day Anakin will be the apprentice. So I think the 3rd season we could well see a split between Kanan and Ezra and even lead to a duel between them, but then again, it may just drag on with another flirt with the dark side but sooner or later its gotta come to head as otherwise where are they going with it all. They had the big thing with Kanan fighting for Ezra against the Sentinel, where Kanan claims he wont let that happen which also mean he will kill the boy if it comes to it. Kanan turning his head when Ezra opens the Sith Holocron can't be a good sign either since only a Sith or someone who thinks like one can open it.

It's used for very different reasons in these two cases though. TFU did it to show physically damaged Vader to display how powerful Starkiller had become - he also had exposed cybernetic legs and arms too. Whereas in Rebels, it's all about the personal connection between Ahsoka and Anakin, the guy behind the Vader mask. This also adds more weight to Anakin's fall as we can see enough of his face to recognise him and it makes his few lines to Ahsoka after getting damaged that much more heartbreaking. This was also helped by having Matt Lanter record those lines - if it was just JEJ saying, "Then you will die" at the end, it wouldn't have hit as hard emotionally.

I agree. That scene was powerful. You have Ahsoka basically seeing her big brother that she loved on the dark path. That was a great way to showcase that in my opinion.

I wonder if there was any debate about the possibility of Vader actually taking the mask off himself to show Ahsoka his real face. Given the choices, I'm sure most fans would've agreed they made the right choice.

I find this really interesting. Ahsoka is literally the only one to reach out to Vader and say she would do anything for him, even sacrificing her own life. She had the chance to escape easily since Vader was injured but she chose to stay because I think she feels responsible for what happened to him. But yet he doesn't give her the chance to join him, hell she might've at that point. I do find it odd that he didn't give her the offer to join him but maybe he interpreted her not leaving him again as her joining him?

One thing I'd want to see is her reaction during the fight between Anakin and Obi-wan. You think she'd try to help Anakin after seeing her reaction during the fight. I was surprised by what she said.[/quote]

Well Vader might've had good reason not to try convincing Ahsoka to join him. Sids didn't take it too well when his apprentice, albeit former one, took on an apprentice on his own. What did he call Maul, a "rival"?

True. Maybe he thought it would've been better to kill her now and not have her suffer under the hand of Ole Palps.

Well, he did attempt to convince her, but she refused and its obviously she knows better and she's protecting the children of the Force . Plus is too full of anger towards Vader and later that turns to avenging Anakin by destroying Vader the being that killed Anakin Skywalker. I think she gave up wanting to kill Vader, once the lil bit of Anakin called to her and she seen his face where its basically a similar theme once Luke learned that Vader was his old man, he gave up wanting to kill him and that pretty much hampered Yoda and Kenobi's plans of having Luke destroy Vader and his master. Yoda goes on the whole forever will dominate your destiny which now seems to be bunk for reasons unknown in-universe(he eve witness and was a part of the redemption or return to the light of two killing machines of the Dark Side, Ventress and Vos).

Vader: We need not be adversaries.
The Emperor will show you mercy if you tell me where the remaining Jedi can be found.

Goes back to Sidious's and Vader's Inquisitor initiative.

Vader: The Emperor has foreseen a new threat rising against him: the children of the Force. They must not become Jedi."

    [...]

Hunt down this new enemy, and if they will not serve the Empire, eliminate them along with any surviving Jedi who would train them. This is my master's command.

We know that the Empire is after younglings, and the Emperor does not really want them around either even as Inquisitors so they're all on borrowed time and are expendable assets while acting as Inquisitors the attack dogs of Vader and his master. Another thing to keep in mind:

Vader: The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am ...

    Sidious: There is no mercy.

Sidious: Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.

I think it was more about Palpatin's line in the season premiere.

Sidious: Skywalker's apprentice could lead us to other lost Jedi
    Vader: Such as Kenobi

I find it odd he didn't even mention Obi-wan, it was the first name he mentioned, did he forget about him somehow?

Vader forgot about Obi-wan? Not likely. I think the persona of Darth Vader blames Kenobi for everything since Anakin Skywalker couldn't handle the guilt.

Mentioning him probably did not fit the dialogue they wrote for that particular scene.

One thing's for sure. Many people have suggested that Vader had reason to loathe Ahsoka for being a living connection to his past as Anakin Skywalker. Granted that; but I doubt anyone could argue that there's a soul in the galaxy that Vader hates worse than Obi-Wan. It's a special kind of grudge when someone dismembers you and leaves you for dead by the lava flames on Mustafar.

That's why he is number one on his kill list. And because of the thing that happened with Padme too, probably thinks it's Obi-wan's fault he choked her. Don't know how he could have get to that conclusion but it's Vader for you.

Thinking about it more (and watching it a few more times), Kanan vs. Maul is now one of my favorite duels in all of SW. The opening sensory moments are nicely immersive, and especially important for Kanan. And then it all comes down to a short explosion of strikes and mostly upper-body maneuvering. It really feels like a round of kendo, and Kanan wearing a mask also helps with that vibe.
