You know why I don't like the name Ben is because after reading the Luke and Mara excerpt and hearing him give a speech about how much of a burden it is to give someone a famous name I became relieved because I thought he wouldn't be using Ben or Obi-Wan. Though when I read the spoilors I almost fell out of my chair. What was with that whole speech if you're going to name your son after someone already!!??? He's already a Skycrawler and there's already certain expectations for him to fulfil.

I think it would be worse if the initials were NS, since nerf is the SW equivelant of a bull.

I wish they would have chosen a more original name for Mara and Luke's child. I don't know why Luke would have wanted to name his son after Kenobi. He certainly didn't know Ben very long, and the man lied to him about his father.(I never did buy that 'from a certain point of view' comment.)
Yoda was really his Jedi Master, not Ben Kenobi.

Besides, why isn't Mara involved in naming the child? The baby is her son too after all.

you are absolutely right about mara needing a say in this whole name thing. but, i hae to disagree about the whole kenobi thing. bc if you think about it, ben was sort of like a second father to him. his uncle was generally just a prick and hi aunt had no say at all, his father and mother were dead...it doesnt go into detail about their relationship bc he dies an hour into the movie, but i imagine ben being sort of a mentor...a second father. then the whole jedi thing, and luke wanted to be a jedi ( it think) so that ties into it, too. he was probably a figure that luke looked up to, no doubt. PLUS, all throughout his life he had been losing freinds and loved ones. his parents, his freinds as he got older, aunt beru and uncle owen, then ben, who probably meant and hurt the most. thats why i think he named his child ben.

Even if Ben's not very original, I like the name Ben Skywalker. It's a good, strong name. At least they didn't name the kid Obi-wan Skywalker. Now THAT would have been a terrible name! How could any parent name his/her child 'Obi-wan'?

    Marajade91,
I agree that Mara should have had a part in the naming process, but I don't agree with you that "ben was sort of like a second father to him, his uncle was generally just a prick and hi aunt had no say at all"
That's all speculation - Owen and Beru WERE the only parents that Luke had known. There is no indication that either of them ever treated him badly. Luke certainly did not act as if he were mistreated. What we saw in ANH was a typical teen/parent confrontation where the teen wanted to go have fun and the parent had to tell him to take care of his chores. Even Yoda told Luke in ESB that Luke always had his mind on other things instead of where his mind should be.

I don't think the name "Ben" for the baby was very origional, however. I think it was just convenient. And why Mara had no part in the naming is surprising, considering what a strong character she is supposed to be.
    Just my two credits.
