Self-explanatory thread topic. Just something I was wondering. For our purposes, multi-part stories (I think "Dark Redemption" is typically downloaded into multiple chapters) will count as one film.

Part of the reason I was wondering is because I've already worked on 1 fanfilm which came in at a moderate length of 17 or 18 minutes. We're now working on a 2-part sequel. We're only somewhere around 30% finished with principal photography and already the rough cut is about 32 minutes long. According to the estimates of some of the others in the production, the grand total length of this will be somewhere around 90 minutes long. (My own personal estimate is a slightly more conservative 60 minutes.)

My question is: How does this compare with other fan films? Are we close to setting a record for length? Heck, are we certain to completely run over any previous records set with a 60-90 minute fanfilm?

I think To Know A Jedi clocked in at about 90 minutes, though I'm not sure. I know it was definitely feature-length, though.

To Know a Jedi is 91 minutes long.

I vaguely remember hearing something about Toy Wars being 2 hours long, but I don't know much about that...

Hm. What what "To Know A Jedi" about? Was it a serious fanfilm or a parody?

It was a serious film, set on present day Earth, about a kid and his group of friends who discover how to make lightsabers and use the Force. One of them falls to the Dark Side. Wackiness ensues.

I encourage you to check it out, it's very decent, though loaded with profanity.

Serious fan film with more swearing than anything I've ever seen.

Basically, it's about a guy in our world who builds a lightsaber and discovers the force but falls to the darkside. His friends then have to stop him.

I think Toy Wars is 2:11. If you count the Raiders Adaptation, that was somewhere around 90.

Yeah, To Know a Jedi was 90 minutes. Toy Wars is gonna be a little over 2 hours I hear. The first rough-cut of the film was 140 minutes. Movie Spoof 2 is gonna be around 95-100 minutes while Movie Spoof 3 will be clocking in around 2 hours.

EDIT: And I believe Doom Raiders was feature-length.

Quest of the Jedi (circa 1991) ran for 2 hours, however, it was essentially 1:45 mins too long

I still give them an A for effort even though it was long 2 hours.

Tie up all the current Siren episodes and that'll run at about 45 minutes.

To confirm this, yes. Toy Wars' II screener runtime was 143 minutes. After some big cuts and trims the movie SHOULD be about 2 hours or just over. It's been tough, but necessary. MUST BE BRUTAL!

there was a SW fanfilm done using voiceovers and all footage done using the Jedi Outcast game, called The Jedi's Demise, and the film ended up being a little over 2-1/2 hours long. if itd been waaay shorter, it probably would have been better. i still havent seen the whole thing yet...

The average "project" (aka fight or forest thing) is about 5-15 mins
the average "film" (with a plot) is about 15-35
and an "indepth film" (lots of plot) is about 35+mins

The only FanFilms over 30 minutes that I watched without feeling the impulsive need to fast-forward were KnightQuest and The Formula -
if that tells you anything about "feature-length" FanFilms. ;)

Longest I;ve seen was To Know a Jedi... and I thought that it's one of the best out there. Acting in most quarters was good, and it comes off as fairly believable- as believeable as lightsabers can be on Earth, anyways.

I agree with Tac - quality over quantity.

^Oh, I agree. And I think our film definately is high quality. The plot is pretty in-depth at times, which is why it's so long. We didn't set out to make a long fanfilm when we started. We figured each sequel might run a few minutes longer than the original "Spirits Of The Force"'s 18 minute running time. But in the scripting stage, we found that this was a story that needed a bit more time to be told properly. Plus, the actions scenes are more elaborate than anything I expected in the scripting stage.

Hehehe. Yeah, literally the script says "And they fight..." When in reality those three words turn into a 5 minute complexly choreographed fight. It's a pleasure to have a fight choreographer on this project who can take three words and turn it into a 5 minute fight. :)
