Congenial good guy Huttese 101: Frozen is well made. It was pretty funny and the animation is great. I was surprised by the hype though.

Wannabe culture critic Huttese 101: The hype is a little lopsided IMHO. Me and some of my (female) friends (I note they're girls because I think that actually changes things) agreed years ago that people are kind of "settling" for Frozen, so to speak. It's nowhere near as good as, say, The Lion King. But little girls don't care. They just like the movie. They aren't so different than I was with The Phantom Menace when I was 8. And I think this perspective is crucial.

It's too easy to get sick of Frozen though, even if I liked it a lot to start. Last year at Disney World, they had a Frozen parade, like, every two hours. [face_relieved]

Yea there was an absurd amount of hype around the movie. Luckily I saw it beforehand, cuz genuinely love it. The hype reminds me of TPM too and how that led to people not liking it as much. Hype is an odd thing:p

I like Frozen's message that other kinds of love are more important than a fleeting passionate, romantic love. Also sisters loving each other and getting along is a good message for little ones.

They've backed off quite a bit now.

This year it is wall-to-wall Star Wars. Like, EVERYWHERE.

I also love Tangled DA! Just as much as I love BatB & Mulan. [face_love] Re-watched it recently; was struck by just how sad it is; found myself comparing it to ROTS, the sadness of everything that happens in it was that intense. Like:
A.) How evil Mother Gothel is. Not only does she brainwash Rapunzel, she's mentally abused her when you look at their interactions. Gothic calls Punzie, "Flower," "Pet," the Mother Knows Best song & right before has a ton of stuff like Gothel putting her down for being, clumsy, vague, criticizing her weight, insinuating she's more beautiful than Punzie but then laughing & saying she's "teasing," etc. Since she only needs Rapunzel for her hair. This last viewing made me so terribly angry at Gothel, it was hard to watch her scenes this time.

B.) How tragic it is that Punzie's taken & not only deprived of growing up w/her parents, but the anguish & sorrow the king & queen felt during those years makes me so sad for them. They never speak, but in the one shot of the queen wiping the tear off the king's face before letting the lanterns go says it all. Heartbreaking. :_|

*Obviously I know its a kids movie & its silly to be looking this deeply into it. :p And I do still love it. I was just surprised by how deeply all this hit me on my last viewing. :)*

I love Rapunzel & Flynn; they are awesome together & separately. I love how bubbly, confident in being able to take care of herself (she's a pro with that frying pan ;)) , capable, & imaginative Rapunzel is. I love that she's taught herself to do so much while stuck in the tower, from being an amateur astronomer charting the stars to being a great artist and into a ton of other stuff too. And I love Flynn's sarcasm & fast-talking, smooth ways, but especially how deep down he has a good heart. And Pascal and Maximus are pretty awesome and hilarious too.

Valency Jane One of my favorite parts of the movie is this:

To think all the lanterns were for her even if she didn't know it, and she always wanted to see them up close and finally did is so beautiful. And I love the song too:)

For a girl power/Disney movie that doesn't end with a romantic relationship that has awesome messages, my go-to will always be Mulan. It irks me that Frozen's held up as this awesome movie for young girls. The aspect of sisterhood's pretty good in it and I enjoyed that in Frozen since it was never showcased in say, The Little Mermaid w/all of Ariel's sisters, but don't tell me its a movie where just because no one gets married at the end its great for young girls. At the end of Mulan, Mulan and Shang are no more than close friends. Also if you want another good Disney movie about the bonds of sisterhood, Lilo & Stitch is a good one imo.

Sorry for the rant, don't mean to offend anyone. I really do like Frozen, its a beautiful film and I love all the characters, especially Elsa and Anna. I can relate to Elsa a lot and think she's awesome. It just bugs me when newer Disney movies such as it are more popular with the masses and its treated like so newfangled thing when there are plenty of other Disney movies with similar messages. :)

*wonders if the ones he dislikes are less commercially successful ones or more popular ones..........* ;)

I had half a mind to mention Mulan too. I agree that one's better for the same reason's Frozen's praised. Frozen is... just... eh. But I'm trying not to be mean. It was contrived in ways that were hard for me to accept. But I have the same problem with The Little Mermaid.

The issue with so many Disney princess movies is that I am not their target demographic-

Nothing wrong with that, everyone needs their own story I guess
