    I turned 26 that summer. O__o

In a couple of years, the first Star Wars (or as we call it ANH) will be eligible for AARP. Then eventually eligible for Social Security.

The first trailer of ROTS is still to my mind the greatest trailer I’ve ever seen.

I was initially a little annoyed by the lack of new footage but looking back on it, it really is a great trailer.

2005 to me is the most nostalgic year for SW. I was 7 at the time, and technically did see the film in 2005 (when it came out on DVD) but the hype was through the roof. The teaser poster in fall 2004 blew my mind seeing it at the Chicago Ridge theater (plus the second trailer for Robots was released and seeing a glimpse of Palpatine’s look scared the **** out of me).

But what a great year! March 2005 gave us the final episodes of Clone Wars on Cartoon Network with the transition into the opening Battle of Coruscant.

We also got Republic Commando, Lego Star Wars: The Game, the ROTS movie game and Battlefront II: all huge staples for Star Wars video games and all of them being good.

And the merchandise! Lego Star Wars toys really hit a new stride in 05, plus the Attacktix battle game. I made my mom buy me a ton of those and still have them! Also can’t forget the fantastic Burger King toys and commercials

The tv spots were amazing too. Some of them capture the tragedy of everything in under a minute.

this one played on all the kids channels and was pure hype

    and my personal favorite

I can’t think of another film that banked on the tragic inevitable fall of a character, especially given this was the definitive origin of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. It wasn’t a superhero franchise that could be rebooted. What we were seeing is how it was gonna recontextualize everything in the OT. Some would say “oh too many spoilers in the trailer” but I think it was much more smart to market it like that because it was like “Hey you’ve seen the other 5 films. You know what’s gonna happen and how it has to end. You’re either gonna see it for that or not.”

I don’t think Star Wars will ever get to this level of operatic drama and angst. It’s a very important touchstone to the whole franchise and I am very happy and proud for this to be the Star Wars film I can associate my childhood with. A phenomenal movie in 2005. A phenomenal movie in 2015. And a phenomenal movie in 2025.

I don't remember those TV spots at all...weird. I do very much remember the BK commercial though, loved that one!

The weird thing is the only reason I know they exist is because of the DVD bonus features. The first TV spot and a few others that had the “light-hearted” trailer voice guy were all over Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Those I remember specifically as a kid. I assume the bottom darker toned ones were played on more “adult” channels at the time.

I remember this, watched in theaters with my mom in the city. This was my first Star Wars movie in Cinemas, second being TFA. I was soo excited having watched TPM and ATOC on dvd with friends many times. Playing games, i remember playing ROTS game on soo many hours, lol. I remember hearing on news paper this movie could get the R+ ratings cause it was soo dark, would we see him slicing children? Its the most hyped for a movie i was as a child. I was 13 i think as i had recently had birthday.

I loved the cringe crawl that starts, war. The opening is perhaps the best opening of all Star Wars. Moved seeing Anakin and Obi Wan working together as equals. His fight with Dooku. Who was this droids general. I remember was bored with Padme scenes, lol get me back to the action. I was shocked that Palpatine was the big bad guy. Order 66 shocked me and i felt such sadness, Obi Wan vs Anakin and Yoda vs Palpatine is one of my favorite duels in star wars. Love seeing them. It ends in tradegy and with small hope.

    So good

Does anyone remember those glow in the dark lightsaber spoons that came in the Kelloggs cereal brands?

Also the ROTS game tv spot I remember seeing at like 5 am on Cartoon Network trying to watch whatever Transformers iteration was on at the time.

Hearing 2000s nu metal associated with Star Wars is weird but kinda badass with the guitar riff [face_laugh]

    OH **** LIGHTSABER SPOONS!

But to answer the original question.... hmm, I'm trying to remember if I watched it five times or six times in 2005. I will say since I was so young back then that I don't think I really appreciated what watching in a theater could do. I still remember going to the I-VII marathon in 2015 (would have done the other marathons had there been any within reasonable distance), cause holy frigging **** if you haven't seen what Mustafar does to a dark, bigass theater, RENT YOURSELF A THEATER. It is seriously so intense

(Or more realistically, at least like, turn off all the lights in your house and watch at nighttime. Seriously, the lava effects are insane. Mustafar has aged so well visually)

I guess simply not getting a kids meal with said toys wasn't an option for those within the foundation?

I also saw the teaser when I saw "The Incredibles". And when it was finished, I let out a clearly audible, "Whoa!" No one shushed me. In fact, one lady turned and smiled at me.

I really hope this gets the theatrical rerelease it deserves. The TPM rerelease was already announced this time last year.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't get a re-release. Although Disney has major new releases the first weekend of May when TPM was re-released last year (Thunderbolts) and Memorial Day (Lilo & Stich). They should still be able to put it in 1,500-2,000 theaters though.
