It's funny; maybe it's because I don't want them to have a relationship that I didn't see it in TLJ.

First time I saw TLJ it never occurred to me that it existed. I just saw abuse and manipulation and forced intimacy as it was presented on screen; non-romantic. I first learned that Rey and Kylo even had a romance from reading posts here.

I get what your saying but I think the GA is more forgiving then us forum people so I don't think TROS using reylo (depending in the way it does ) wouldn't land the way they 'd want it too . There are also Times that People that do ship or can see the relationship still working when the hero is set with an utter Psychopath. It doesn't happen as much in Our stuff like Comics or Movies mind you but it does happen a lot in Manga. Case in point When the series (I've talked about it before ) Tokyo ghoul was going on . In part 1 I started Shipping the Main character Ken Kaneki with a minor character who was his favourite author Takatsuki Sen . We didn't even know that that Sen was a woman until her first on panel appearance in chapter 114 . All we got for sen until then was Kaneki thinking about how Sen's Novels Refected the events in his (Kaneki's life) Then the twist at the end of Chapter 142 happens and we find out that that everything from Ken becoming a half ghoul to meeting his actual love interest touka to getting Tortured (to the point his hair completely turned white ) by Jason at the hands of the Group he works for Aogiri tree. Ended up as a part of the One Eyed Owls plan and we found out who the one eyed owl was and Guess what it Ended up being Takatsuki Sen. actual Sen wasn't even her real name. Her Real name was Eto Yoshimura . She was the main villain of part 1 and was the driving force of part 2 but sadly they introduced a new villain that was a Joker Expy which softened Eto a bit but I still never lost hope that they were going to be endgame (they weren't sadly ) I held on even when Ken arrested her for being a ghoul (a Human eating monster). Reylo, in theory, should be the Forbidden Romance with a gothic tinge. FinnRey, in theory, should be the RomCom with a sweet tinge.

Both need good execution to really work, and both only have the bare essentials in an ST film to even begin, making both relationships largely platonic right now. The difference? TFA competently executed Finn and Rey’s friendship, to the extent that either a platonic friendship or a romance could easily be built upon it. TLJ botched it’s basis, making the entire thing a toxic, cancerous subplot TROS would be better served trying to maneuver around rather than through.
I will say this for Rian Johnson: his professional decision to leave all options on the table for the next film mean that even his preferred pairings are mostly only hinted at, and any actual romance is not technically required for the plot to work: Rey and Kylo’s story hinges more explicitly on sympathy and misplaced faith on her part than necessarily romantic feelings.

But I’ll also add that the Rey and Kylo story is really designed to work better with a a presumed infatuation on Rey’s part towards Kylo. The sheer amount of sympathy and care placed on Kylo by Rey in the script moves better if Rey having passionate attraction to Kylo is an accepted supposition. And he *did* clearly view it in romantic undertones himself when he wrote and directed it; he simply acted to remove more overt romantic elements in the script when he got to shooting and editing.

FinnRey isn't happening if we believe the rumours about why we've barely seen rose are true

This is why I think LFL didn't have Reylo as endgame goals. For as much as RJ hyped it, I think he would've put something overtly romantic in if he was allowed to. Either he wasn't, or he didn't want to and he's just trolling Reylos epicly.

What rumors would those be? Real ones, or crazy fan theories? We do have a picture of Rose.

That's true (Reylo v Finnrey), but of course, in real world terms, Finnrey is far more "forbidden" and reylo is status quo. In-universe, skin color theoretically doesn't matter, but the audience clearly has a preference for the status quo as far as romance goes. Plenty of people like RomComs, yet Finnrey is a fringe ship despite being the one new gen relationship where you can definitively say they have strong feelings for each other. Even if it's meant to be platonic, how many platonic relationships are heavily shipped in fandoms?

Funny (and I'm not directing this at you at all), shipping characters with a strong friendship is huge in fandom (take Johnlock, for one example), yet shipping Finnrey is beyond the pale.

Aside from one reylo speculating about it, I haven’t heard this “rumor.”

Which means it has the weight and validity of every other baseless headcanon

More than baseless, actually, if the insinuation is that Finn is the father; John has said that Finn is single as of the start of RoS.

I think there’s definitely some racial elements at play on terms of the two ‘ships’ comparative profiles, though I’d add the results might be a little bit more skewed by Kylo being a Pale-Skinned Long-Haired Pretty Boy, which is its own sub-genre of angsty characters with a well supplied internet infrastructure ready and waiting for any new version of the archetype, regardless of real-world racial issues.

It’s also just that, as a Wasp myself, I don’t think I’m nearly the authority required to comment on the breadth and depth of possible racial bias in the internet ‘shipping communities. I’m sheltered, y’know?

Thank you, Professor Gender Politics, but we don't need another day of your deep insights into our female members' fandom.

It is not a sub genre and the angsty the "archetype" has it's equivalent in comics. Batman... Robert Pattinson is the new Batman... now there is the true testament to it's equivalent of Twilight. From Twilight Edward Cullen Vampire to Bruce Wayne... Talk about typecasting.

Personally I have always been a Superman girl myself.. So whatevs.

Edward Cullen and Batman are the opposite of "typecasting". Even Robert Pattinson would love to forget Twilight ever happened. He is trying very hard to get away from that and Batman is another step in that direction. Vampire stories, especially the teenage vamp romance sub genre and comic book superhero stories are pretty different, in their tropes and archetypes.

Kylo Ren is a tumblr woobie and those can be found in several genres in TV and in movies. However, that is less a narrative archetype and more a character a fan segment gloms onto. They can and do also vary as Loki is a fun trickster character with lots of charme and Kylo Ren is an incel with temper tantrums. Spike on Buffy was considered a woobie and character-wise, he has just about nothing in common with Kylo Ren. And the next story with the next woobie is just around the corner. Twilight and its shipping is old news by this point, the uber-shippers have moved on and what remains is overwhelmingly the endlessly mockery and memes.

Actually Kylux is in the lead on AO3.

I'm imagining Spike meeting Kylo. If he thought Angel was a drippy pill, Kylo isn't even pining over a woman and at least Angel isn't non stop with the soul business.

Not to mention when Angel is in evil mode, Angelus pretty much is a quippy badass. Kylo is the supposed "evil mode" and he is no fun. Characters can and should have little idiosynchrancies, that`s what makes them distinctive and fun IMO. Damon on Vampire Diaries is another woobie and his thing is a total lack of impulse control, very charming and fun-loving, but often a super-evil dude. But a funny thing about him is his Felix Unger OCD like covering the good rug with tarp before he tortures someone on it. That`s a hilarous contrast.

And in terms of toxic romance, he once threatens to break his love interest`s arm (she put herself in mortal danger and he wants to get her out of it but she doesn`t budge) so not cute and cuddly at all. The scene with ripe with sexual tension since the actors both look like they are seconds away from making out. But it`s not played like the epitome of romance and, more importantly, they have other kinds of, way more positive, interactions. Not to mention a push and pull in their relationship where never anyone holds all the power. The show still often and all the time acknowledges their relationship can be toxic - with that exact word - and that if they want something better, they need to work at it.

Kylo and Rey as a romance just lack the awareness, the variety, the true connection, even the basic reasons for being attracted to each other outside of "the other has the force".

I read down part of the Twitter thread. I love how “someone’s daughter” thinks she can speak for “the general audience.” As if those of us who were part of the “general audience” and don’t subscribe to her abhorrent views are chopped liver or don’t count.

    *reads further*

Oh, I’m an “angry fanboy” now? [face_rofl]

*checks underwear* Nope. Still a C-section scar there. “Fanboys” don’t have those. I don’t even think Arnold’s character in Junior had one.

“Kids” love Kylo and Rey? Not mine. I’ve taught my teenage sons what healthy relationships look like and what toxic relationships look like.

And did she seriously compare Kylo to Harry in When Harry Met Sally? I mean, I guess it works if you count the time that Harry strapped Sally to the diner booth and told her he could take whatever he wanted...oh, wait...

Then there’s the tired old Mr, Darcy comparison. I keep re-reading Pride and Prejudice because I keep missing the parts where Mr. Darcy murders his father and other people.

    And Waffle House is gross.

I love how that Waffle House tweet is so often used as proof of Reylo. Waffle House must have been the "cafe" Daisy mentioned on Jimmy Fallon where JJ told her the plot of TROS.
