It’s not like she was very good in the previous movie to be honest. She was over-powered nonsense in TFA and she still is in TLJ all she does is to play as the outlier, which makes a bit more sense considering the trilogy is more about the Skywalkers. Her being a nobody? That already establishes what her role would be. She doesn’t have any connections with them.

 

I actually find both this movie and its impact refreshing. I was kinda getting bored with the buildup of this movie seemingly as going to be great and universally acclaimed. This is more interesting.

To think so many here anointed him the Heir Apparent to George Lucas and wanted him to do IX, angry that JJ got the latter. Oh, wait. RJ is the former.

 

I cant believe people are seriously saying The Last Jedi is sexist. LOL

 

I didn't see Rey as Luke's surrogate mother

 

This is true, people did act like Rian could do no wrong and JJ was Captain Vanilla.

 

Poster #1: I wonder if there was lots of pressure from Disney to force specific story decisions onto TLJ.

No wonder the point of Poe's story in this movie was lost on some folks.

 

Leia was in a bikini and Padme was literally ripped out of most of her clothing.

With a bare chest scene from Anakin and now Kylo, I'd say we're pretty equal gender wise.

 

Yeah, no. Don't buy most of this. Rey being overqualified was a PROBLEM with TFA and TLJ. She is still a beginner. Wanting her to 'shine' when she's had no training and just found out she can use the Force 2 days ago is ridiculous. I'm happy for any scene we get where she's not Wonder Force Woman and just the wanna be kid.

Doesn't bother me that Rey is a nobody. Can't nobodies affect the destiny of the galaxy as well as anyone from a famous family?

Rey tries to talk to Kylo because he's her other option aside from Luke. Who else was she supposed to turn to if Luke won't budge?

And it's not a matter of working through Luke or Kylo's problems for THEIR sake, it's for her sake and the welfare of the galaxy as well. She's not mothering them, she's trying to connect with them.

 

Really?! I feel like 18 years of processing reactions to the prequels has taken its toll.

Yeah. This has a prequel-era feel to it. Maybe Rian shouldn’t have admitted to loving the PT.

 

We live in a different age with the PT an ST from the OT. People react instantaneously and are supposed to reach a conclusion NOW on something. OT had time to marinate in the cultural stew. PT an ST…..NOW! WHAT IS YOUR OPINION NOW?!

 

Caught me completely off guard too.

 

The reason Rey needed either Ben or Luke is because she knew she couldn't take Snoke on alone, as we see in the throne room scene but I do agree that there are some problems with Rey's character development. For one they wrote her with no faults or negative things about her (Her being an orphan/jakku doesn't count) so I think that's why that reviewer sees her as a surrogate mother, there's no reason not to trust Rey, shes never done a single thing wrong. It's sad because Rey could have been one of the best characters in the series, her background alone should've molded her with some more interesting personalty traits but we don't get any of it so I find myself having to build her character in my head, filling in the blanks the same way I did with the prequel characters (Like many other fans probably did/do) and hoping that at some point we'll get something more.

 

Agree except with literally being ripped out of her clothing. I don’t recall seeing anyone ripping her clothing off.

 

Alot of those people were angry about Rey in TFA... so I don't put much credence on that element driving the low audience score on RT.

"kids movie." is the most upsetting thing in this tweet to me, especially with how the last film in that trilogy is episode 3.

Hows about this crazy theory, maybe some people just dont like it? One massive gripe for me is the ridiculous slapstick humour, its like the movie is in a completely different genre. You know the political thing never really occurred to me and its sad this is what everyone seems to be focusing on. My 11 year daughter and i put the force awakens on yesterday while wrapping some presents and even she is totally dumbfounded by the direction of the last jedi.
Personally i think the decision to have this movie happen immediately after tfa was a mistake, all of this happens within what 48hrs?
