You can add a bit more to that, as that number only includes Friday but not the rest of the weekend when it comes to the domestic market. With the offical wekend estimates being out now, it should be enough to have passed Finding Dory:

5.12m, down just 29% from last weekend. If that holds up in the actuals, the movie should have passed 520m on Sunday already.

I think RO was done more than well enough not only to satisfy the studio but also to assure them they made the right choice in letting Edwards do things in a less conventional way than we might have expected. This all bodes well for the future.

Jyn and Cassian clearly did not survive, but neither did Darth Maul, yet - canonically - he did!

RO is still playing at Imax, including 3D Imax, here in the UK.

That's what excited me. Edwards brought an almost art house feel to a number of moments across RO, and it worked wonders. Hope that means Disney will keep hiring more unconventional directors, and fewer Trevorrows.

Be fair to Trevorrow, ever seen Safety Not Guaranteed? That movie is weird as hell, kind of similar to Edwards first movie Monsters when it comes to mumblecore abstractness.

Do the people who have been tracking it think it is going to pass the Dark Knight domestically? It looks like it is going to be really close.

After this weekend's hold? Yes absolutely. TDK is toast I think. Yes it'll be close for sure but it will happen. Only $15M to go and I think it'll have $525M after next weekend. Then just needs $10M more. Having a nice hold next weekend would be a good sign. Super Bowl Sunday hurts yes but what matters is the Friday and Saturday holds not the Sunday or weekend. Then we have President's Day upcoming which helps a tiny bit and every bit helps!

I still think $540M just like I have been saying for weeks.

This could have been the sequel to a "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" campaign.

Yes, we did it and now praying the actuals hold or maybe increase. Now, its off to Feb 26 and maybe just maybe we can snatch that special effects award. Captian America was not nominated for any of them. Hope R1 can deliver and break the spell.

Yay for #2! Nice to see.

I'm just happy it was such a strong hold this weekend. Fantastic to see! Hopefully we see some nice mid-week numbers (for this point / relative to last week) and it'll be on its way to TDK.

I thought I was done for my viewings, but couldn't pass up a chance to see R1 in 2D in Ljubljana, Slovenia tonight (for my fourth Euro country). It's showing 2 times a day, and since the cinema is right next to my hotel, I had to represent. So for international box office, I'm still doing my part. This will be viewing #23. As the movie hits so many good notes for me, I think I've still got a few left in me come February.

A 29% decline seems pretty good. The 7th weekend was also one of TFA's smallest declines, 21% to $11 million for the weekend, when it was ranked third behind Kung Fu Panda 3 and the Revenant. Expect declines higher than 45% next week if TFA is a guide. TFA didn't dip below $6 million until its 10th weekend. TFA made $3 million in weekend 11 at 1,433 theaters. Rogue One should be at about that count next weekend I assume.

Yeah I agree, around $3M next weekend. Super Bowl Sunday hurts the box office a lot. I mean, maybe we can hope for $3.2M or something like that, we'll see, but right around there.

A couple of weeks ago the question was raised whether Trump's policies might turn out to alienate people in other countries enough to affect box office for RO.

I'm doubtful about this, but if there were any such effect, you might expect to see the beginnings of it now, with feelings running high over in many countries over the recent executive order on border control etc. Here in the UK, for example, there is a 1.5-million-strong petition calling for the invitation to Trump to meet the Queen to be rescinded. But I doubt this will affect box office as I just don't see it being the sort of boycott many people would think of or engage in. (Plus, RO and most SW movies are sort of half-British anyway in being filmed in the UK and involving numerous British actors.)

As RO is winding down now, it might be very hard to spot any effects reliably (though other US movies could be looked at). Of the countries for which BOM lists foreign box office, Turkey (if it still playing there) and France may be the most likely to show any effects (France not just because of its relatively large Muslim minority and the fact that its figures include North Africa, but also because there is a strong tradition of leftwing civic activism in France; of course there will also be a large number of French people who agree with Trump, but it is unlikely they will go and see more American films than they normally do as a supportive gesture).

darth lynch- I could be wrong but I don't think that datatapes means that in a political way. I brought this up a week and half ago and how it could affect some of the movies released worldwide. Thankfully, R1 has done beyond expectations and with the $1.033 billion adding that to the TFA $2.068, Disney star wars has brought in $3.1 billion dollars. This is awesome. It is more than what the prequels brought in combined unadjusted. No matter what, at least for 2016, we are the number 1 movie domestically, and the number 2 movie worldwide. That, is just freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![face_dancing]

I agree I don't think he meant to open a political debate. The interesting flipside to me is whether or not Kathleen Kennedy/Disney came down on the creative team to keep Star Wars out of the political fray to protect the domestic haul. I for one was nervous to see a #ban Star Wars even talked about out there, regardless of anyone's politics.

You're still ahead of me by a few. I'm trying for 22 today, and for sure a viewing Wednesday. I will post I'm sure on that day, but Wednesday I am taking my own "Star Wars Day" as Wednesday is incredibly significant for me as a fan. While tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope's Special Edition re-release, I saw the movie on February 1, 1997 and I mark that as the day I became a "true Star Wars fan." By some casuals' definitions, sure, I grew up watching the OT a bunch of times, I had some toys, but like many kids, I was into a lot of things, from Transformers to TMNT to many video games and comic books, Spawn, all kinds of stuff. To call myself "a Star Wars fan" may be the modern way of doing things, but I prefer to use the traditional "fan is short for fanatic" definition and that restricts our fandom to actual fans not just saying "most people in North America like Star Wars so they're all fans." I walked into that huge old school Broadway theater (now closed, sadly) downtown and there were hundreds of Star Wars fans dressed as Jedi and Imperials, waving lightsabers, and cheering every single moment of the film. This was the last showing Saturday of opening weekend, too, but it was rowdier I would say than opening night of the last few Star Wars movies at my theaters.

I remember feeling the electric energy of the crowd, and here was this movie I had seen so many times before, but it felt like I had never seen THIS movie before, and not just because of the SE changes, but the way it looked like a brand new movie (completely pristine print, no old VHS cassette, etc.) and I felt like I was watching it with new eyes. It was one of the most significant moments of my life and led me not only to becoming a Star Wars fan but also a filmmaker. So I mark 2/01/1997 as my fandom date and in just two days I'll be celebrating 20 years as a Star Wars fan. It's crazy it has been that long, but it has been a fantastic 20 years and I never imagined where we would be now when I sat in that theater so many years ago.

I still think A New Hope: Special Edition may be the most impressive display of the power of Star Wars in this country that has existed since ANH's initial release. Sure, TFA nearly made $1 billion and took #1, and that's certainly right there, but for a movie that had aired on TV so many times, that everyone I know had on VHS at home, to come back to theaters and be such an enormous event that its opening weekend record for January stood for more than a decade, that's downright insane. The re-release of ANH was one of the biggest movies of the year, which is so amazing. If you took the average big blockbuster and tried to re-release it, theaters may have trouble even booking it. For certain, most of them would tank and make a few million bucks. The best of them are like Titanic and can maybe pad their total by $50 million in today's dollars, but here is a movie that adjusted for today's dollars cleared $200 million easily with no benefit of 3D. Matinee tickets at my theater were $3 and night shows $6, compared to $9 today for matinees and $10.50 or so for night at theaters around here. There will probably never be a re-release of such significance as ANH: SE unless it's another Star Wars re-release down the road.

It is interesting to notice how the Special Editions, while criticised so much, actually managed to save Star Wars from being forgotten.

I include myself in the batch who watched Star Wars in the 80's, but became a real fan when the Special Editions were released.

Yeah I admit I was completely unaware of the SE criticisms at the time, because the Internet was still pretty new, and that's how I became a fan. I loved them all. That being said, I always told fans when I did hear of these criticisms that for me it was 25% the new changes, at most, and 75% just seeing the movies completely restored (clean prints, etc.) on the big screen with fellow fans that really brought me into the Star Wars fandom. It really wasn't like, "Wow, I saw ANH before, and it was alright, but then they added Jabba and I was like, ok, greatest movie ever!" No, I had honestly probably seen the Star Wars trilogy at least 50 times by that point. I wore them out as a kid. It seemed to be a "go to" movie series to watch at friends' houses when we were bored, and I watched them myself all of the time. You know how kids are with movies they like -- just like I am with Star Wars still! :p It was more to me how well the restoration was done. I was just watching this preview on iTunes of 1984 (the version made in 1985) and it looked HORRIBLE and extremely old in the preview. The text was moving side to side, jumbling around for some reason like a bad scan, and there was grain everywhere, it just looked godawful. And that movie came out after the OT. That's one thing I love about Star Wars, I can watch any of the movies and I never feel like I'm watching "an old movie," I always am watching a movie that looks absolutely fantastic.

I think Star Wars is to movies what a top A-list celebrity or model is to humanity. Because of the immense scrutiny and care taken, and the massive amounts of money available, actors and actresses who are "past their prime" as far as human aging goes continue to look fantastic well after most people simply wouldn't. I looked up some of the girls I thought were so pretty in high school about 4 years ago, when I was 30, and I swear almost none of them were good looking anymore. Many of the guys have beer bellies and haven't taken care of themselves properly. Yet in Hollywood, there are tons of women who are 40+ who are gorgeous and look way younger than they are and guys like Tom Cruise over 50 in perfect shape, able to do his own stunts, etc. Star Wars is much the same as that visually, it looks far younger than its age because when you're the most popular film franchise ever, you get the care and money you need to be restored repeatedly and protected. It's really a shame that some other classic films aren't protected in the same way, so that newer generations are so acutely aware of "how old" they look, even though they were shot on 35mm film and properly cleaned up and restored those movies should still look great. For celebrities, if it's your job to look great and you're being paid so handsomely, you make time to work out, and being in great shape is hugely aided by having vast amounts of money. How many people struggle to eat the right foods consistently, make time to work out, and focus on looking our best? It's very hard, for any normal person, including those of us with a lot of discipline, to do so at all times because life happens. But when your life IS about looking your best, and you can hire a personal dietician and trainer and it's no big deal to your finances, it sure makes fitness a lot easier. That's basically Star Wars when it comes to restorations. It's worth too much money to keep the movies looking their best, so that's how they shall remain.
