Onderon has a lot of history in Legends. Some of the best Star Wars stories took place on or near Onderon. A funny story is that during Star Wars A New Hope, a couple of scripts misnamed a planet. The mistake was corrected, and Onderon was created as a new planet. Funny story and I do not know if it is true or not.
If the sandy urban planet in Rogue One indeed is Onderon, I wonder how the team will present its flora and fauna? The vegetation of Onderon as seen in TCW is very colorful and alien-like, with yellow stones and purple palm trees. Additionally, its animals are very alien-like aswell. It essentially feels very much like a PT planet. Now, this could easily be solved by only having the film take place in the urban areas of Onderon. But still, I'll be quite disappointed if they do show some vegetation that looks NOTHING like Onderon from TCW. I mean, those purple palm trees are AWESOME! Who wouldn't want to see those in Rogue One? For sure, many fans (especially on this board) will complain that it looks too much like the PT. Then I'll be like "Yeah? So what?".
I think it'll be de-Prequeled. Made a bit more Earthlike. But it really think it's the planet. It's a good story. "I fought for my people 20 years ago, and I'll fight again."
It would be a a shame if they are not able to truly come up with any "alien landscapes" for this movie. Hopefully at least one of these planets will have something new, different and NON earth like.
I would like to see Bestine, as it was referenced by Biggs Darklighter in the Anchorhead deleted scenes.
To be fair, you seem to be the one bringing this up much more than anyone else. Just something I've noticed. Edit: But, yeah seeing Onderon in live action would be fantastic.
Deathtroopers filmed in Iceland - same as the tropical planet or not? EDIT - These Deathtroopers have different armour and helmets to the 'beach' Stormtroopers. I'm guessing that this is a flashback scene pertaining to what happened around Jyn and her father.
If it is Onderon, I hope they tone down the psychedelia of the foliage significantly. Bring it more in line with, say, a semi-arid West or Central Asian landscape. Hints of odd colors are fine, though. Just not all that cartoony purple and yellow, which look like they were ripped from a bad late-90s screensaver. Edit it down, basically. As good film designers do. Most definitely a different planet. Icelandic tundra and tropical islands obviously co-exist here on the same Earth, but I think Edwards will be following the "one ecosystem per planet" approach. And it looks so great - earthly and alien, as Iceland does. Jonipoon can keep his purple digital trees.
Maybe the movie starts by visiting the home planet of each of the Dirty Dozen, showing what each character is personally fighting, as they are recruited.
That's my hope. Would be so great to see each of their different planets in a sort of recruitment montage. Though based on the EW descriptions, it seems Chirrut and Baze are old friends, and may hail from the same spot in the galaxy.
I would like to pose that the desert city and the beach are on the same planet. I think this because of the presence of those orange crates in both places.
That seems extremely likely. What is in the orange crates is obviously important to the Death Star itself. Given that they can get metal, plastic, etc. from anywhere I can only imagine that they are mining some special power source for the Primary weapon and this planet is rich in that material (ok, ok, crystals ). We have seen it being transported on the back of a tank, slung underneath that big shuttle and presumably inside the hull of the AT-ACT. And I would not be surprised if the Icelandic landscape is what the planet looks like after the mining machines have extracted the 'crystals'.
Don't get me wrong, I love the one-biome planet designs and planet Iceland looks great there, but I also enjoy the occasional less-earthly locale. I really liked some of the prequel planets (particularly Utapau, Mygeeto, Cato Neimoidia, and Kashyyk) and would like to see the occasional world with a little more imagination in its design.
I'm sorry but that's not the case. I responded to GregMcP's post before me, in which he stated that hopefully they will de-prequel the planet (if it is Onderon). Everytime I bring up the issue I respond to someone who openly talk about how it's better to leave the prequels out of everything. So I'm sorry to make you realize that I'm not overreacting. Would you call the forests of Pandora in Avatar for a "bad late 90s screensaver" aswell? I don't think so. I think you're just bringing your own distaste for the prequels into this yet again. Many people, including myself, enjoy worlds that look alien-like, but we also enjoy worlds that remind us of Earth such as Hoth and Endor. We welcome all types of worlds. If they make a new spin-off where Luke returns to Endor, and all of a sudden the trees are pink, would you call that "good filmmaking" aswell? Of course not. Endor should look like it was first presented, as should Onderon (this is about flora and fauna, not architecture). But as it is, we don't even know if this is Onderon or not, so perhaps we should save this discussion for later. And anyone who fistbumps your post about me "keeping my purple trees", you're nothing but a cheer sector for a bully.
I hope we get to see some creativity behind creating planets in those new films.. whether in ST or Anthology... They clearly lacks prequels' WOW factor... yeah I know they are going for the 'real' look but with today's CGI they can achieve just that.. I think what they lack is George's imagination
Since there are rumors of a Han Solo cameo, I wonder if he would be part of said montage and have a cameo similar to Wolverine's in X-Men: First Class.
