thing is in the 2nd trailer the DS seems to be hovering right rather close to jeddha while we know our moons is like 275,000 miles away or so......and probably hovering about the same or closer to scariff in trailer 3 ......so while our moon might be an optical illusion in that picture the closeness and size of the death star to scariff probably isnt. JMO.
Well the picture of the death star coming up over the horizon would be taken at about 70,000ft I would say, if the planet's atmosphere is similar to ours. The "upsidedown" shot of the death star over the planet would be taken at many, many times that altitude, maybe 2 or 3 million feet up from the planet surface to be orbiting at the relatively slow speed we see in the eclipse shot. I'd say the eclipse shot is a realistic view of how large the death star would appear to be to a person. Not absolutey giant like in this shot This would have to be a camera trick like the moon one I posted before. The most improbable thing about these shots of the death star from the surface is that they all show it perfectly level with the north pole at the top.
Agreed. I think the reason she goes from hard-nosed cynic to miss enthusiastic is due to her father's safety being on the line. When she finds that out her attitude changes. Not sure if she ever believes in the rebellion or if she's using the mission for her own ends. Maybe at a certain point her motivation turns to revenge (if her Dad buys it). The symbolism I get from it is that the Jedi are out of the picture for now. They've been knocked down & out, so it's up to ordinary folk to strike back against evil. Which to me is the theme of this movie.
btw do we think thats rian johnson (episode 8's director) that we see in the new trailer (the death star gunner)
Yes, this is about the ordinary people joining together, but I think the statue can still symbolize the Rebellion and the future of the Jedi. The Empire hasn't completely destroyed every trace of the Jedi. Even though the statue is no longer standing, it's still there. Obi-Wan returns and is responsible for bringing the band together in ANH, and with them, the Rebellion continues and is able to destroy the Death Star. I guess there can be two different approaches to Rogue One: think of it without ANH context, as a time when the Jedi are extinct, or you can think of the events while knowing what happens later.
After being a bit lax in my interest for Rogue One (I'm just so much more excited for Episode 8) I am very excited to see this film after seeing the 2nd trailer. It won't be quite like something with more use of the force, but it looks really good and I got a real chill at the end.
You got an ancient giant fallen statue of a Jedi. You've got a city worshipping The Force as a religion. This movie is making a serious effort to deepen the story around The Force. And Chirrut Imwe. And Darth. And the thing powering Death Star. This is a very Forcey movie.
I like it. Now when Han scoffs at "ancient religions" I'll know he's not only talking about the Jedi. He's talking about the whole mythos surrounding the Force.
By the looks of that shot she is in a prison, not just a cell. Opposite you can see more cells on different levels. Without keeping up to date on spoilers with this film, my assumption of the broad strokes from these trailers are Jyn is captured by the imperials, broken out by the rebels and taken to yavin because of her link to Gallen. She accepts the mission and they head to Jedha to recruit others/meet Saw. Jedha is attacked by the Death Star and they head to Scarif to get the plans. Is the planet shown in darkness Scarif? We still don't know what the empire are up to in this (besides finalising the Death Star). Are they on to the Rebels and trying to track them down? Are they using Gallen to get to them? This trailer builds the anticipation nicely.
Maybe it's a female of Kewtol's species. I think the empire would have females and males separate in jail, mixing them in prison is a no-no
just want to say nice signature.........a 'save brady, save the dream!" signature would be awesome though
When they were reading off Jyn's rap-sheet in the first trailer, it did occur to me that they might be referring to her committing "crimes against the Empire." And they were just reading them off, as a matter of public record and to let her know that they know who she is/her backstory. I mean I don't really see the Rebellion holding "forgery of Imperial documents" and "possession of stolen goods" up to be real crimes given the circumstances. Heck the Rebels most likely do that sort of thing themselves. And this trailer, makes me thing this even more.
I just got back from a holiday in Tenerife and have only just managed to watch the trailer in glorious 4k and I must say it really is stunning and has me well pumped for this movie.
One thing we know for sure based on all the trailers: this movie is going to be a pure pleasure to look at.
Also, we got to keep in mind that our moon is orbiting at a far greater distance from Earth, than the Death Star is orbiting Scariff. The Empire obviously would have the Death Star orbiting as close as it can to the surface of Scariff, to make transportation of construction materials quicker, and more convenient. The Death Star, while not nearly as large as our moon, is still extremely massive. With it's close proximity to Scariff, it would easily look bigger than our moon.
This may have been said before but I'm just back from being on holiday and haven't been able to keep up but to me the jedi statue laying in the desert looks very like Ewan McGregor's depiction of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
I guess it would be possible for the death star to get that close to a planet and yet orbit as slow as we see. It would require a massive amount of repulsor lift engines though to stop that much mass from crashing down into the planet. I calculated the eclipse shot. Our moon is 25 times larger that the death star. So assuming the star is close to the same size in the sky as our sun appears to us (which from the eclipse shot it is), the death star has to be 25 times closer to the planet than our moon is to Earth, to perfectly eclipse the star. The moon is an average of 239,000 miles from us, so 239000 รท 25 = 9560 miles or 50.5 million feet, rather more than my earlier estimate of the upsidedown death star shot lol. Although I suppose Jedah could be much larger than earth, so in that shot the death star could seem a lot closer than it actually is?
