About to watch TFA after a really long time. ANH is right after that but I'm not sure I can do both.

Finished TFA. I actually found it enjoyable this time, BUT...

Finn - Boyega is a very good actor, but that "because it's the right thing to do" still bugs me
Humor - the amount of it is annoying
Recycled ideas - I think everyone knows which ones
Han Solo - I don't like what they did with his character and I hate the way he died
SKB - horrible, horrible idea

Positive sides:
Kylo Ren - still my favorite emo
Overall a fun movie

And now ANH. Can't miss watching young whiny Luke.

I thought Finn's "because it's the right thing to do" line was fine. That short conversation with Poe seems to sum up his character in that movie - he lies and may act brave, but that pretense quickly crumbles under pressure to reveal that truly Finn is terrified of the First Order and only wants to get as far away form the First Order as he can, but then his friendship with Rey inspires him to face his fear and find his inner courage...which is why TFA is such a powerful character arc for Finn, IMO. ​

I agree that some of the humor was forced, not so much for Finn (though there were a couple of times that it felt overly forced with him), but mainly with Poe. The first time I watched the movie, Poe's lines made me wince and fear for how the movie was going to go. But after the Jakku scene with Kylo and Poe, most of the humor is okay, although I find Dr. Kalonia patronizing and annoying. ​

I also agree that it's annoying that TFA wasn't original, and the Starkiller was an incredibly bad idea.

Although I kind of like TFA, they could have chosen a much better direction (i.e. not making Luke look like a loser, not killing off all the Jedi, not defeating all the bad guys in the first movie of a trilogy and making them look totally incompetent, and using the Sith as a bad guys since I'm not a fan of the "use the dark side and the light side when you're really only using the dark side" nonsense).

Anyway.....I never understood why people found Luke whiny. Or Anakin or Ezra, for that matter. The only character in SW I find whiny is Sabine...who of course, most people don't consider whiny as far as I can tell.

Lucas did, there was never any surprises when it came to those featurettes...

 

Lucas is no longer in control. How he marketed the films in the past doesn't matter anymore.
