Pope Leo seems like he’ll be able to carry Francis’ torch forward in a number of key areas while also being a stabilizing figure who can get past most of the intramural controversy surrounding his predecessor save for in the eyes of the crankiest of fringe cranks of course. :p

Hmm. I’m not so sure that you’d qualify as a crank per se. A renegade, perhaps? :p

Granted no one would remember him if his name didn’t share the Star Wars connection. Since A.) he was pope over 1,100 years ago and B.) He was pope for less than a year.

or maybe it was just over a year

Pope Lando II: Why you slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler. You've got a lot of guts coming here, after what you pulled

Plus this was back when Popes didn’t always take a new name when becoming pope. That only became a tradition that every pope did sometime in I believe the 16th century

so his birth name was just Lando

I think that tradition of taking a new name dates to the High Middle Ages

The fact the comment was intended mostly for comedy aside, I meant something closer to, I don’t know, independent or rebellious maybe than a full blown splitter given the whole Sola Fide thing. But I suppose you’re right that it wasn’t quite the right word to use there even if it played well into the intended effect at least. :p

With the election of pope Leo XIV that means every continent has now had a pope that has a permanent human population with the exception of Oceania which likely never will have a pope due to the simple fact that it has like 5 cardinals so unless some masterful dude comes out of there I don’t think it will ever happen.

Huh on the official Vatican website they have the cardinals sorted by continent and country and for some reason they have Central America as its own. Which is like the only place I have seen that. There’s no cultural reason or geographical reason that Central America needs to be its own continent

    Hmm…

    The Chalcedonian Split: 451
    The Great Schism: 1054
    The Protestant Reformation: 1517

By God, we are due for another roughly semi-millennial shake-up, aren’t we? :p

There was technically a schism between the Constantinople Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church over the fact that the patriarch of Constantinople (which yes that’s his title) said Ukraine could be its own church and didn’t have to answer to Moscow anymore. Some orthodox communities liked this some didn’t. And thus Schism.

It's probably short for Orlando, which is Italian for Roland

My favorite medieval name factoid is that there was a poorly attested Anglo-Saxon king named "Watt", Watt of Sussex

Which, idk, you'd think the English surnames Watt (source of the name for the SI unit) and Watson come from that, except most sources think the "watt" of Watt/Watson is from Walter, and thus probably Anglo-Norman and much later... BUT maybe there's a chance it does come (at least partially) from Watt. BUT the weirder part is I could never find anyone else named Watt, so unless there were a lot of undocumented commoners, it was a rare name in medieval England. And the name doesn't have an apparent meaning in Old English, and it's only one syllable which is also weird for an Anglo-Saxon name, where they favored Germanic dithematic names. Maybe Watt is Celtic in origin? I'm just speculating now.

    Hold on, you're totally right!

Sorry Dandy, it's going to have to wait for another semi-millennium, roughly speaking. :p
