I vaguely remember all of that. I wanted to be a Marine Biologist when I was a kid, but then I realized that I wasn't very good at the science. But I used to read lots of stuff about Cetaceans, especially dolphins. They've been my favorite animals since I was 7.

    :D

I wanted to be a dolphin trainer from age 4-17.

I find it very funny that now, being in Film, I work at SeaWorld.

I still want to be one, and I'm staring down the business end of 40. Cause, ya know, being a ****ing legal assistant isn't exactly my life's ambition.

    Informal Otter Fact:

Otters are jerks. At least, ours are. They look all cute and harmless but a 3 foot otter can send a 6 foot seal running away.

    Today's fact:

    Even MORE Sharks

    - Little is known about the growth and age of sharks. Many conventional methods for aging animals, such as examining teeth, will not work with sharks.
    - Sharks grow slowly compared to bony fishes, possibly due to shark's slow digestive time and feeding rates. There is a considerable variation in age and growth rates between species and even between populations of the same species.

I don't know about the Pacific Sea Otters, since we don't use them in our shows. I'm mostly referring to our Asian River Otters, which are the ones who perform in the Sea Lion & Otter shows. Those are the evil ones.

    Today's Fact:

    Even More MORE about Sharks

    - Today we know approximately 1,000 species of cartilaginous fishes compared to more than 20,000 fish species with a bony skeleton.
    - Cartilaginous fishes lack bony scales like most fish have and are covered instead with small dermal denticles which are built like miniature teeth.
    - Sharks and rays are cartilaginous fish that have an internal skeleton made of cartilage, a flexible, light weight material that contains no bones.

    Today's fact:

I'm Tired of Hearing About Sharks

    - Sharks have become one of the most successful, adaptive species existing on our planet. The earliest evidence of the ancestors of modern sharks comes from the remains that appeared 350 to 400 million years ago.
    - With teeth the size of a human hand, perhaps the most spectacular of ancient sharks was the megatooth, Carcharodon megalodon (which means "rough toothed, huge toothed"). After debate, most researchers now believe the megatooth was longer than 40 feet, ranking as the largest predatory fish of all time. A model of a megatooth shark jaw can be seen at the exit of the Shark Encounter.

I like the Clyde and Seymore sea lion and otter show at SeaWorld Orlando. The mime-clown that heckles the audience as they walk by is the best part of the show.

I also got an autograph from one of the female Shamu trainers/performers. She was hawt. [face_devil]

As Shark Week is ending, I'm praying that next week will be NON-SHARK facts.

    But for tonight:

    Sharks: part I-lost-count

    - Sharks are equipped with an array of advanced senses. Perhaps the most notorious is their ability to smell. Some sharks have two-thirds of their brain weight devoted to smell alone.
    - As the shark swims or takes water in through its mouth to breathe, some of the water passes in and out of each nasal sac. A shark's sense of smell functions up to hundreds of meters away from a source. Sharks can locate minute quantities of substances, such as blood, in the water.

Last year when camping in the Redwoods I encountered 3 river otters swimming up stream. It appeared that they were eating on some minnows. Cute little guys/girls.
