It would also fit with Palpatine's Hitler vibe to have separate agencies with intentionally overlapping mandates at each other's throats.

That could work too. Make her the one directly below the Grand Inquisitor.

Might get confusing from a Doylist perspective when/if the rankings get reshuffled to promote/demote somebody, though.

My assumption is that its not so much reshuffled as, "promotion comes at the cost of your life."

So whatever Second Sister existed before Mara won't be there when she gets the rank.

Why place Mara in the Inquisitors? They had their chance to do this and didn't take it. Likewise we have yet to see canon Emperor's Hands. All we had were foolish fake-threats serving the Emperor to test Vader created by Doctor Cylo.

What if in canon, the Emperor's Hands are more like a late concept, later than in Legends, that rather serve the reborn Emperor instead of the pre-ROTJ one? Hence the Emperor's Hands being the Sith Eternal Cultists working closest to the Reborn Emperor...

His clone-son being one of them might replace the role of Sarcev Quest. Maybe his wife was another before they settled down and had Rey? Maybe not. Fun thought, given the many defective Palpatines before the Sith Eternal had their Emperor reborn, is the "Son" of Palpatine actually older than the Clone of Palpatine? Or was he cloned only after the Emperors failing body in future attempts to get a better body?

These Sith Eternal Hands may encompass many more interesting fellows from Legends or canon both yet unaccounted for. Maybe foolish Occhi was one too if Aliens count and not all need to be Force attuned? Cronal obviously became Snoke.

I kinda headcanon now that Rey's mom that dated (Clone-)Son-patine might be canons Roganda Ismaren and Rey is actually female Irek!

Out of interest, are you talking about Legends or canon here?

In Legends, yes, they could have made the Emperor's Hands and the Inquistorius one and the same, but I feel like it would make both groups less interesting. The Inquisitors are specifically about hunting Jedi, whereas the Hands seem to have a more subtle, wide-ranging espionage/assassination mandate. Taken with everything we know now, Mara was likely sent to kill Luke at Jabba's palace because the direct approach of the Inquistorius wouldn't have worked.

(Or to put it another way, our heroes might actually have been expecting the Imperial Inquisition. :p)

In canon, I think it would have been a mistake to just toss Mara in as one of the Inquisitors. She's a character who means a lot to a lot of fans, so if they've ever going to include her in canon it's probably going to be a big deal. You don't want the Star Wars equivalent of Batman v Superman causally killing off Jimmy Olsen after about a minute of screentime.

There's a pretty huge difference between the Inquisitors of Legends, and the Inquisitors of Canon. Legends Inquisitors are Force-using Gestapo agents, NuCanon Inquisitors are like Dark Side using Imperial Knights of the Fel Empire. Complete with their own standard issue uniform and lightsaber.

Mind you, the Inquisition's greater prominence in canon is a major factor here.

Jerec was a High Inquisitior retroactively.

How about we rename the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer and Imperial II-class Star Destroyer to the Imperial-class Mark III and Imperial-class Mark VII respectively. And there's more variants than just the two we've seen on-screen.

This is a dark interpretation of Tarkin and Daala and fair warning to people who don't want to deal with gaslighting, grooming, or manipulation:

Tarkin needed someone to spend potentially a decade in isolation in the Maw Installation and utterly fanatically personally devoted to himself. To this end, he used his personal charisma to manipulate Cadet Natasi Daala into becoming his personal attache as well as henchwoman. He had her heavily trained in Naval tactics, military leadership, and also honed her sadistic psychopathic elements. Things that he'd specifically sought out from the Academy psychological profiles.

However, Tarkin also screwed with her brain considerably. He planted numerous ideas in her mind that she was hated by her colleagues, that the system was rigged specifically against her, and that only Tarkin actually was capable of rescuing her from obscurity. The seeds of truth in this helped make her personally enraptured with him. By the time he eliminated Admiral Krennic, Tarkin assigned her to an obscure secret research facility that would never see her promoted or even made aware of to the larger military or Empire.

Worse, she was grateful for this promotion to Admiral despite having almost no real authority or prospects.

Admiral Daala's friendship with Gilead Pellaeon helped her realize just how had she'd been by the old ghoul and how bitterly she'd been misused. It also caused her to re-evaluate her own tactical abilities that had been molded, essentially, into being identical to Grand Moff Tarkin's own. It was, in many respects, very similar to her being in a cult.

I'd not be surprised if new canon Tarkin had Daala take the same Eriaduan family trials in the jungle he had to endure! Initiate her and the like.

Let me add one to the same basket of ideas:

Back when Ackbar was Tarkins personal taxi driver, Ackbar witnessed Daala being around Tarkin often and was privy to the two in private even as no questions asked shuttle driver. But Tarkin knew of Ackbars brilliancy and war hero history, which made it especially humiliating he kept him as lowly driver slave. When the opportunity arose, Tarkin had Ackbar teach Daala about tactics and fleet combat and both got to know each other even if not liking each other. Ackbar realised how she was under Tarkins thrall and sumblime tried to help her break free, which failed and had Tarkin separate the two. Shortly after, Ackbar was freed of Tarkins service and Daala vanished in the Maw.

Fast forward to Fate of the Jedi: With Pellaeon vouching for Daala and her NJO war records prooving her help and saving many lives the New Republic was torn over forgiving her for past crimes before that time and only when Ackbar post mortem via notes in his personal records about her added his voice to it did she forgive her and let her become Chief of State. If those were fake though nobody ever could confirm.

PS: Unrelated to this post I had the weirdest of dreams last night:

Mel Brooks famous "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" musical number from one of his movies, but done with Legacy era comics "Imperial Mission"... "Nobody suspects the Imperial Mission..." (being secretly a spy agency)

Heck it made so much sense.

    Another bit of humiliation:

    * Admiral Daala wears a white Admiral's uniform as her job is officially Krennic's, even though most of it is done by Tol Sirvon and the Empire doesn't know who the new head of Weapons Development is.

    * She is completely unaware of what an enormous insult this by her lover.

My headcanon regarding Aristocra Formbi and his personality shift between Outbound Flight and Survivor's Quest: the one we see in SQ is a clone, implanted with some of Thrawn's personality.

"Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition" is a Monty Python sketch. And not a musical number. But if you did a Mel Brooks version in your head, so much the better...

And who are the Imperial Mission working for? I like this idea, mind you...?

Obvious answer: The Imperial Inquisition. I didn't expect that.

There was a musical number in the Mel Brooks movie about The Inquisition....not normally a humorous topic..but Mel Brooks nailed it.

Hmm just going off ANH, I always thought of Tarkin as someone who's ruthless and direct...who doesn't bother with subtle machinations or manipulation. So all this talk of him manipulating Daala doesn't quite seem in character to me.

I always thought of him as very subtle and eel-like because I took him to be one of the military leaders secretly part of Palpatine's inner circle and aware he's a Sith Lord so every day he went to work plotting treason.

Mind you, this is just a modern way of looking at a past plot.

Tarkin was the brutally efficient type...think Nazi SS type. He is a true believer as well....he would not be plotting treason against Palpatine. Aside from Vader, Tarkin was probably the next guy in line. If he had been alive after Endor then the Empire may not have fallen apart.

I thought it was canonical Tarkin and Motti planned to use the Death Star to take over the Empire.

Vader was there to watch him.

    Utterly deranged headcanon:

Ochi the Jedi Hunter was a pseudonymed Boba Fett. He crashed his speeder because Lando accidentally shot his controls while shooting wildly at something else.

Boba's last thoughts as he crashed into quick sand that buried him alive was, "This is ironic."

    PS:

Inuniverse Conspiracy Theory: the Zeltron species is what the red sith became when they suddendly vanished from the galactic scene. Some gene therapy to loose the facial tentacles that were all but bred out anyway due to human interbreeding over millennia that also turned the red skin more pink-ish and masking the species inherent Force abilities as empathy, and voila... Red Sith rebranded as Zeltron. Pleasure center of the galaxy and a positive PR!
