I can't imagine a guy who did a teens in cars movie could possibly do a space movie.

It’s just stupid as there are multiple female mods. The good news is I constantly forget people’s gender. lol.

which isn’t good cause I constantly misgender people by accident. But still my point stands. It’s both sexist and also just a really stupid and broad descriptor.

 

the fact that for years women Directors of big blockbusters weren't a thing it wasn't happening I think its Ok to emphasize that a director is a woman! hopefully someday our culture will evolve not to have to do that but unfortunately we aren't there yet as a people and I'm a progressive liberal I get what your saying! It also depends on the context too how the phrase is used and what forum like is it a Historical Documentary or book or conversation like what's the forum it is being used in. for instance you come home from the store tell your partner about a person you met why do so many people mention the persons race instead of for example just saying I met this nice guy at the store and so on and so forth. I think the fact she is the first ever Woman from Pakistan to direct a big budget Blockbuster movie let alone the first woman to ever direct a Star Wars theatrical movie that is a really big deal a really good thing that should be celebrated.

 

It's definitely okay to emphasize that a director is a woman. I think we should keep doing that until it's no longer a big deal. But there's a difference between pointing out that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman to direct a Star Wars film and dismissively calling her "that woman director" because one can't be bothered to learn anything more about her. I'm talking about people whose brains go "Oh, the director is a woman? Okay, that's all I need to know, then.", as if "woman" is a woman's whole identity.

These things go hand in hand. We need to keep pushing for women to take charge and make it known when they do, until society gets used to it and learns to see women as the individuals that we are.
