At the very least they want us to think that left to her own devices, without Baylan around she’d go full in dark side but I can’t tell if that’s where the character will go or if it’s misdirection.

Maybe something will happen and she will go almost full dark side but then something pulls her back.

Whatever happens I won’t be shocked if she goes on a rampage, possibly killing the Nightsisters and/or a bunch of reanimated stormtroopers.

Shin definitely has feelings for Sabine. Now, what kinds of feelings? It's interesting how she asked "Who is the one that she seeks so desperately?" And when Baylan told her that he was a Jedi trained in the wild after the temple fell, she responded "Like me." Coupled with the "Do you miss it? The Order." There is a sense of longing for something she was never a part of. Part of a larger family. Sabine, like Ezra and herself, were trained in the wild after the temple fell. Even though Shin cares about Baylan and is fiercely loyal to him, I'd say that she is not particularly satisfied with the life she's living under him, and there is a void in her heart. She wants to have friends, who are her peers, and she wants to belong. And when it comes to her relationship with Sabine, it's really interesting. She could have killed her all the way back in the very first episode, but she chose to spare her. And the way she was just always looking at her, and how she was genuinely upset that Baylan seemingly was not going to honor his promise - it's really interesting. Although, so far, these feelings are pretty much one-sided, as Sabine doesn't care one bit about her. Understandable, of course, after she stabbed and choked her and kicked her around. But I shall watch this relationship develop with great interest.

These are all fantastic observations and conclusions based on what we know. I believe Shin does in some way assist Sabine and the “Rebels” in hopes that it could lead her to a more purposeful life and direction.

Shin was also concerned when Thrawn and Baylan let Sabine go out to look for Ezra. She asked whether Baylan was going to "honor his agreement" with Sabine. And Thrawn says, Yes, they'll let Sabine find Ezra, then destroy them both.

Shin doesn't seem into this sort of "honor."

"Honour" is such a key idea here - it's Baylan's whole brand. The medieval knight outfits, his ostensibly chivalric behaviour and language, his broadsword fighting style, his distrust of witchcraft.

So Shin is confused and uncomfortable when her supposedly honourable mentor seems to waver on fulfilling his promise, and then goes along with Thrawn's dishonourable twisting of it. The beginning of a fracture between master and apprentice I think.

Predicting a Raiders of the Lost Ark style ending for Baylan, destroyed by the power he seeks to control. But Shin will recognise the horror of it and pull herself back from the brink.

Shin doesn't seem as dark to me as some say because of moments like this which reveal that she values honor.

By the way, Shin was trained to be "more than a Jedi." What does that mean?

I'm also really interested in finding out the answer to this. I like how the show has gradually revealed more about Baylan's worldview, mission and motivation.

I've always gotten the sense that Baylan is subtly keeping Shin in check and that part of Shin is a little frustrated by Baylan however when Baylan explains himself to Shin she does seem to understand and agree with his point. In other words she acts like a padawan. That said, she's not reckless and doesn't disobey her master like Anakin would disobey Obi-Wan, or Sabine disobeying Ahsoka. I think there's something cool about how Shin is more respectful of Baylan than Sabine is to Ahsoka. That said, if Balyan is killed I could see Shin becoming unhinged and raging out.

The minute a character starts talking about attaining some great power, I assume it will destroy them.

    I agree.

I could see a Raiders type twist. But aid like the twist, if there is to be one (which I personally think will happen for Shin) it to be to be more on the lines of Tron.

I hope we find this out before the season ends otherwise I definitely want to see her again so that these things can be explained. I mean if you’re seeking to be “more than a Jedi” isn’t that line of thinking seeking an ultimate power?

Baylan trained her to be more than Jedi. Something different. Something more powerful. Shin may not know what this really means just yet. She seems to be in the dark on the destiny he's chosen for her.

Perhaps in his quest for more power, he ends up sacrificing Shin to 'whatever' so he can attain this power himself. Basically he offers her up as a sacrificial lamb, throws her into the Volcano to please the Gods, etc.

I kind of wonder if Shin is to be-rather than a sacrifice-more of a vessel for what (or whomever) this power he's sensing there to take over. And basically Baylan had trained Shin and raised her for the purpose of this being taking posession of/inhabiting Shin's body and accomplishing her ends using Shin's physical presence.

With everything Baylan is saying these last couple episodes, it really seems like that's a plausible possibility.

Baylan said he trained her to be much more than a Jedi. I think he's going to sacrifice her (or at least attempt to).

Perhaps. Though that moment would have to be earned and it isn’t yet. He seems to really care about her.

I rewatched the episode and was going to share my excitement thinking about her future as her own character and I come back to find out everyone's speculating she's going to get possessed or Baylan is just going to sacrifice her. Yay?

Maybe I'm just reading too much into her, but I think she's a far more interesting character than any of those outcomes provide. I've already explained my thoughts on the undead theory and those thoughts are basically paralleled in my antipathetic perception of these theories. Again the theories are all possible and there are references within Ahsoka that can give credence to it. But Baylan's line about being more than a Jedi to me was mainly to parallel with what Anakin said to Ahsoka that she is more than just the war and death she was a part of as a padawan. It's also just something the antagonists say in Star Wars, all the way back to 'You don't know the power of the dark side'.

Look, I would be utterly disappointed with basically anything that removes autonomy from her because her entire arc up until this point to me is literally about finding her own place, finding a belonging. All those elements are lost immediately when some dark side entity overrides her mind. All of this that I've connected with will just be nothing then.

To me, in a very brief summary, Shin is a character who has lived on the outskirts of society with this father figure for so long, and guess what? That child now is grown, and she wants to not be so alone anymore. Yeah she might make the choice to go fully dark, but I want it to be her choice. I want her making the choices throughout that experience. Not some spirit that comes in and takes away her independence. In my opinion, Shin's arc has been a coming of age story and that is intrinsically relatable to an audience- and isn't that what Star Wars is all about? Family. Growing up and yes, taking the lessons of our mentors, but eventually having to choose for ourselves what is right and what is wrong. Baylan's protectiveness is a trait I've experienced in my own life for better and for worse, and the reality is I've had to make tough choices to carve out my own existence. To find belonging. That's part of why I've really connected to her.

But yeah, those are just my thoughts. Needed to get them out. However, it's obvious that the idea of her being a conduit to some darker presence is very exciting for a lot of you and the fanbase as a whole feels like they've caught onto those theories. It'd be cool in that respect, to bring people together. Star Wars is best when it's a party...a celebration.

That party wouldn't include me but that's okay too. Can't be for everyone after all.

Either way, I hope everyone has a great day and is excited for Part 7 :)

I agree that Baylan planning to sacrifice Shin isn't really set up yet for the viewers, but then again, Baylan doesn't share his plans with Shin much either, so we wouldn't necessarily know.

My view is that if Shin is possessed, it will be more by accident than plan.

I actually think you're onto Filoni's thinking about Shin and Baylan, as characters. This master and apprentice story is being set up for a long term arc, IMO, that goes beyond this season and beyond this show. I get the strong feeling that these two are supposed to be long-term additions to the New Republic era storytelling, and in that context, there will be no sacrificing Shin. She will continue to grow, and eventually, outgrow her master. It just...feels that way to me. They're spending way too much time with these two just to set up a magic possession sacrifice thingy at the end of the season.

Not every crystal has to be a lightsaber crystal. Sometimes, a crystal is just a crystal.
