Shmi Pregnant ???

Well.. Hum, this is not exactly Lit-related, but maybe there's something about it in the novelization, so...

When Anakin unbinds Shmi, she looks like she's pregnant. The size of her belly and the way she puts her hand on it...

Plus that may explain one of the gravestones, the little one...

So, was I hallucinating the four times I saw the movie, or was she really pregnant ???

I don't know. But I'm getting ready to go see it again, so I'll look out for that.

 

I'm betting she put her hand there becuase of her broken ribs. Next time lay off the milk duds. They'll get ya.

It's possible she might've been holding Cliegg Lars' second child. Good eye, I'll have to watch that movie again.

 

Whether or not she was holding Cliegg's child is irrelevant. Shmi is as dead as Dillinger, and so is any possible fetus.

 

Well, if she's pregnant on screen then George killed a child on screen. Not exactly what a PG movie should have...

Xizor: The novelization mentioned nothing to suggest that Shmi was pregnant. Perhaps the actress was pregnant or fat.

 

I'm going with August being pregnant while filming the scene. Shmi wasn't supposed to be pregnant, probably.

I think those other graves were there to represent the harshness of life on Tatooine.

 

Well, one of the grave's probably Cliegg's first wife... But I think the other two are Shmi and the child she was carrying.

I thought Cliegg had only recently moved to Tatooine, fleeing the Core Worlds. He freed Shmi about 3 or 4 years after Anakin left, I think. I assumed thats when he first arrived on the planet, or shortly there-after. Maybe it is his wife though. . . I don't have my Visual Dictonary with me and I can't remember if she died before or after he and Owen moved.

 

The VD says Owen was born before they left the core, but it doesn't say if Aika, Cliegg's first wife, died before the arrival on Tatooine. It is likely, though. That doesn't mean he couldn't have put a gravestone near his farm to keep her 'close'.

 

You know, I've been wondering why there's three gravestones...

Ahh, that works Xizor. I don't like the idea of Shmi being pregnant though, but Lucas has kept bigger suprises away from us before (Vader = Anakin anyone?).

Sturm, if not Aika and Shmi's unborn child then its just to show how harsh life is on Tatooine. Look at Owen and Beru, they seem to be used to sadness and death when Anakin brings back Shmi. And then in ANH, look what life has done to them, and the final hand that they recieved. Ouch.

I really doubt any of the "pregnant" theories. Pernilla August is 44. I'm not saying its impossible, but its highly unlikely that she was pregnant. And I doubt that Shmi was, 'cause that's a rather large plot hole.

BTW, why did the Tusken keep her alive ?

 

I have no idea why they kept her alive, but probably to promote the view that they were sadistic animal like people who satisfied themselves by physically torturing others
