It's a good read, if a bit stilted and overly long. But definitely a highlight of the Bantam Era. It also dovetails with Dark Empire, which is cool.

Everything is always worth reading. Even the worst books (Twilight) are worth reading....once. Then stick them in a box, lock them up in the darkest corner of the basement and forget them. [face_skull](Actually, I'm not even that mean to my books- I have a "shelf of shame" in my library where I keep copies of the worst books. Why don't I get rid of them? Well, as long as I hold on to this copy, it stays out of circulation and nobody else will have to be hurt by them! I'm doing the world a favor!)

Right, but back to Thrawn Trilogy- heck yeah you should read them. Doesn't matter if it's non cannon- a good story is a good story. [face_laugh]

I read Twilight so nobody could accuse me of bashing what I hadn't read.

I'm tempted to read the post-NJO for the same reason.

    ...Nah.

The Allston books are pretty good. Denning over saturation though. Traviss for the most part is good. Golden? Eh.
I've read the Twilight series twice. Once to see what the hubbub was about and a year later to see if it aged. It didn't. It fell.

Read them. And then cry because, ...

... so few EU-works hold up to them quality-wise.

... with the current changes to canon-policy they're no longer official.

... Talon Karrde has vanished in EU-limbo and we don't know, what happened to him.

... they were so artistically done.

Tervlon, I agree the new unabridged audio narrated by Marc Thompson is amazingly well done, he really does the voices well...the only voice he doesn't remotely sound like is Han Solo, but he still manages to deliver a performance for Solo that makes for a version of the character that is his own. I was fascinated his choice of accent for Talon Karrde, all those jokes about Hondo aside, here's another character for contender of the most interesting man in the galaxy. :p

Desha, I love your whole "shelf of shame" concept, great for a laugh. I, too, have difficulty getting rid of many books that I've spent time reading, even the bad ones. I feel like there are still things I can learn from a bad book, and it's always fun to see if something worthwhile can be taken out of it.

I had to read Twilight for work (was in teen services). Read the first book, then asked my friend who read the whole series to summarize the rest of them, because reading the first was painful enough. Even though it hurts, you do get a slight feeling of accomplishment having gotten through a bad book, if only to be able to say you survived.I felt the same thing after watching an entire episode of "Jersey Shore"...shame, but constitution +1.

And there's always the "so bad it's good" category- love attending bad fan fiction panels at conventions. My friend and I have been watching Bennet the Sage reading "My Immortal". If anything, it makes me feel great about what I write, lol. I might post some here....someday...

Personally I don't think the TTT or Zahn in general are really strong books. The only one I like overall was Outbound Flight and Jorus made even that a chore. Though as I said I do like a few of his OCs though again not the two most here cite.

I think what disappointed me about Outbound Flight was that C'baoth was exactly like his clone in mind as well as in body. Kind of like finding out that the origin story of Boba Fett, Mysterious Bounty Hunter In Mandalorian Armor, was... that he was a clone of Jango Fett, Another Mysterious Bounty Hunter In Mandalorian Armor. It just woulda been more original if they'd actually been different.

Agreed. The repetition that riddles SW gets dull.

Even the worst books can teach something, usually "how not to do this". Every book and piece of information has the right to exist, and if it gets people to think or feel (even if those feelings are of the utmost disgust) then it has served a purpose.

Crystal Star has redeeming qualities. Like the Jedi Prince series, it crosses the line of so bad it's fun. The three above do not, generally being long, rather boring, and strongly out of character.
Plus, Waru. And the Empire Reborn being tied into Jedi Outcast.

Yup. When a novel is collectively agreed upon to be the worst in a series as large as this one, no reading is required.

I haven't read them yet myself, yet despite their reputations I'm curious about The Approaching Storm and The Crystal Star and I plan to read them eventually...just not all in one go. One day, I will study and contemplate the mysteries of Waru. :p

Although I read the Thrawn Trilogy novels a while ago now (probably mid to late 90s I think) I'd heartily recommend them, even with Episode VII just around the corner. As others have said they are set almost immediately after ROTJ so I think it should be easily separated as potential standalone story in the mind.

I'm very tempted to get the Thrawn Trilogy Dark Horse e-comic adaptation but with this in mind, does anyone know if Dark Horse online will have special offers on either free comic book day, or May 4th? discounts on Star Wars titles for example. I'm sort of hoping for a blowout sale as it's their final year of their comic licence agreement.
