i believe that it should have been 3 hours long. there are missing elements nessaary for episode four, five and six.
we at least should have seen yoda land on daegoba and maybe the "Seeds of Rebelion" deleted sene, that would have set us up
for the classic trilogy and perhaps the death of shakk tii on the Invisable Hand would have helped as well. And oh yea the scene with padme and
obi-wan that should have been in there. thats all that i have to say.

I think condensing the information told in I and II into a single film would have allowed a more elaborate rise and fall of Anakin; however, ultimately I still think the films work placed where they are.

What I think would have made the films better is if they, simply, restructured Episode II. I think episodes I and III are very well structured, however I think Episode II is the real 'missing link' of the series. Shift some of the information from ROTS to AOTC and develop the Anakin-Padme dynamic better. I think ROTS seemed rushed because AOTC didn't do its job well enough.

Regarding ROTS - apparently the original cut of the film was 4 hours. I likewise think however that it would have benefited from the 'Seeds of Rebellion' storyline as well as further Obi-Wan development.

Ultimately I think the 'Rise and Fall of Anakin Skywalker' was far to complex for 3 films, and I think that is Lucas' main motivation behind The Clone Wars Series is to further elaborate. The basic points are there in the films, however a lot of gaps were left in regards to the development of Anakin's character. This is what I think the true 'Prequel-section' of the mythology looks like:

    Darth Plagueis
    EPISODE I: The Phantom Menace
[Sifo-Dyas Novel] - This plot point needs to be elaborated on in order to further understand the rise of Sidious and Dooku
EPISODE II: Attack of the Clones
    Clone Wars
    The Clone Wars
EPISODE III: Revenge of the Sith
Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader

The whole 'Rise and Fall of Anakin Skywalker' is very complex.
