Thanks. My sister had it slightly harder as she got the tall blonde genes. But while I’m far from full-blooded, wonderful people have treated me as a normal member of the tribe, whether sharing my family history with me at gatherings so I can take pride in it or giving me lessons in the language.

I hope so. I do notice when he gets in trouble he calls me, even when it is something that his father is better equipped to handle...like towing him out of a snowbank.

Adult kids that need help often call the parent that is calmer and more gentle and patient with them, and that's often Mom. Even if the other parent is the one that can help, they call the other to soften the blow.

Feel like there is a reverse Arak: Son of Thunder joke that could be made here.

...and now I remember the 2007 film Pathfinder (2007 film) that maybe would be an easier refference.

Even if non of them are really fitting since it's a question of adoptation and not blood realtionship in them.

B.t.w. do anybody know what I'm talking about without having to oogle it?

That's really nice to hear :)

    Not familiar with that.

I’m extremely ready for the weekend right now. Work has sucked this week, but I’ve got tickets to a play on Friday and the symphony on Saturday. I love weekends like this.

I am simultaneously ready and not ready for the weekend. Ready to escape winter but not ready in that I haven't even begun to pack my bag.

The play is Steel Magnolias. I’ve seen the movie based on the play, but not the play, so when my company got asked to send a reviewer to the play, I accepted the assignment.

The music is Carmina Burana and the Firebird Suite.

So I'm going to talk about the weather again, because with the crazy results of climate change it's becoming difficult not to.

So far this year in Greece we've had no winter to speak of. The past several weeks were actually so unseasonably warm that many of my plants thought it was spring and started blooming, and the school my daughter attends, together with several of her cousins, decided to take the kids on a field trip to Tatoi yesterday. Tatoi is a place some 30km north of Athens where the summer palace of Greece's former kings is located, there's a forest on the mountain and it's a great place to take kids. My cousins who are teachers in that same school were also on that field trip.

And yesterday had to be the day when all the rain that didn't fall since October fell in a single go. I swear there were cats and dogs and lizard-monkeys and eopies falling from the sky, and I might have seen a rancor or two.

Needless to say that, after a day of torrential rain, we got back a bunch of very cold and sodden younglings in the afternoon. I had prepared a vat of soup in preparation for their return (let me note here that we discovered the glory that is corn chowder during the lockdown, and it's become a staple on cold days in Chyntuckopolis) and we dried them out and warmed them up and put them to bed early.

Today everyone is back in school, but I'm pretty sure we're going to have sick kids over the weekend.

I'm tempted to say that China is kindly requested to take back their hoax and shove it up their backside, but @UltramassiveUbersue made a pretty good case a while back that it was a Canadian conspiracy, so I'm going to put that request under a "to whom it may concern" heading. But seriously, this stuff is happening more and more often, and I'm beginning to feel that we're not so far away from all those dystopian movies I saw as a kid.

We’ve been in a megadrought for years here and have been very lucky this winter to have a lot of snowfall. Bonus: it’s my favorite weather. But having something make a dent in the drought is nice here.

I'm not going to talk about the weather today (although I could, we suddenly got freezing temperatures and it's snowing in parts of Athens) but instead I want to tell you guys about something really stupid I did over the weekend.

During the lockdown we set up a mini-gym in the basement so that we wouldn't turn into couch potatoes, and this friend who lives nearby and is something of a fitness freak often came to train with us since gyms were closed. She offered to come this weekend to show me the new training regimen she's following and I accepted – because the lockdown was two years go and I forgot that she's not a human being, she's a MACHINE.

Oh, and just to give a bit of context, I'm a reasonably fit person. By this I mean that I'm not likely to represent Greece at the Olympics anytime soon, but I do my 3-4 workouts a week and at least two of those will be power yoga. Also in the summer when we go to Halkidiki, I go trekking in the mountains for several hours without breaking a sweat.

But I wasn't ready for this.

On Saturday we did the lower body part, and she had me squatting this way and squatting that way and lunging and jump-lunging and deadlifting and whatnot, for 45 minutes with hardly any breaks. By the time we were done my legs were on fire, and when she came for the upper body workout yesterday I was already feeling very badly sore.

The upper-body workout was another 45 minutes of push-up and crunch and plank variations, again, with minimal breaks. And here I was doubly stupid, because having done part 1 and thus knowing what I was getting myself into, I still went ahead and did part 2.

Today, the soreness in my legs and butt from Saturday's workout has fully set it and I can barely sit, let alone walk. My abs, arms and shoulders are already killing me from yesterday's workout. Since that's likely to get worse before it gets better, chances are that tomorrow I'll be paralyzed.

Bottom line, never listen to your fitness-crazy friends and don't try new workouts, especially when you're hurtling towards 50 and your chances of becoming a professional bodybuilder are slim to none. [face_beatup]

Well, at least you know your limits now, @Chyntuck!

On a similar note, I signed up for a gym membership last week and I'm starting a workout regimen this afternoon. I've been getting into whitewater kayaking, but for that I need to improve myself in both endurance and strength, both of which I'm pretty bad at. I have a coaching app that prescribes my strength training routine for me, so I just need to figure out the cardio routine.

Yup. "Paralyzed" was a good guess as to how I'd feel today.
Actually, I feel like I know my upper limits, if you get my meaning. Any sorer than this and I might as well be dead.

I’m in a year-long wellness program and have lost track of my bicep curls, mountain climbers, etc. I’m enjoying the results, though.

Yeah, I think that the defining feature of any sort of exercise is delayed gratification. The workout itself isn't particularly enjoyable, but the way you feel afterwards makes it worth it. For me the best moment is the immediate aftermath of a workout, when the hormones/pheromones/endorphins/whatever work their magic. I get such a high, you'd think I've been doing hard drugs.

I know exactly what you mean. It’s like the hard part of your day was mastered and now you can look at other impossible things.

I’m still planning on moving back to Massachusetts in the summer and I’m getting very restless and nervous. But I just figured out that with the proposed schedule, I can go to Les Miserables at the major theater one more time. My boss had promised I’d get those tickets if I were still in the state and I’ve seen it multiple times here with my friend, so it’ll be great to have a send-off like that.

I'm not too excited about the Bad Batch and I haven't been watching it regularly, but Chyntuquita loves it (surprise surprise for an almost 8-year-old little girl) and she's been badgering me to watch a recent episode about Wookiees because she knows I love Wookiees. And we just watched it together and [gaga_mode] OMG OMG OMG the Wookiees are so so perfect and Kashyyyk is so so amazing and the trees and OMG the trees and I loved it [/gaga_mode].

Ahem. Some cool Wookiee lore in there. I most highly recommend it. :-B (But, seriously, watch it, it was a really good episode.)

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone on the boards and to the mods for the Festival of Fanfic favourites. I've been struggling a bit lately and part of that has been to do with concepts of self-worth and then of course it spirals into whether or not I'm actually okay at this hobby I love so much. So to see things get nominated and that people have enjoyed fics and characters has meant a lot to me. I've either found myself smiling like an idiot or getting teary. I'm also going to apologise for not nominating stuff, there are a myriad of excuses but none of them really cut it.

Basically, you guys, all of you, are amazing.

Even when your self worth may take a dip, you have plenty of worth to people who know you, @Kit' so hold onto that while any internal drear gets sorted.

I’m still alive, too busy to much writing but that’s expected with a three, almost four month old, and I have a love/hate relationship with the Tapatalk app so I’m not on here as much as I would like.

Hopefully I can soon get back to editing my stories as I’m seriously looking at getting a chrome book so I don’t have to use my husband’s laptop as it’s slow to boot up.

Also, which ‘one’ in German: Eins or Einer, would be used to say ‘Rogue One’? I tried looking it up but got nowhere.

I don't use Tapatalk much anymore. I only keep it for mobile picture uploads. For all other mobile use, I use the website directly in my browser. The mobile interface is very good and you have the full feature set.

So, last Thursday night I was at work and I get a text from my son saying, "I would like to see you before I leave for California." This surprised me because the last I heard he was going for an internship in August. I text back, "When are you leaving?" and he tells me Saturday (two days from that text). I then call him and find out he was offered a full time job in Napa Valley, he arranged for housing with some other guys that have a four bedroom house and he was leaving in a couple days to drive across country. [Sigh]. I explain to him that if this is going to be a permanent move that he will have to get a new driver's license and register the car in California. The problem is the car is mine. I told him to come to my house on Friday and we can go to the DMV and transfer the car over to him and arrange for insurance. I then find out that he didn't pack up his belongings in the condo he lives in despite the fact that he thinks he will not return. So now I am stuck packing up his belongings and cleaning out the condo. I haven't decided if I am going to sell it yet. He may decide he hates California or at least the cost of living in the state and return. I am fairly certain that the common sense part of his brain is not fully functional yet. I would be mad but I believe I did something similar to my parents when I left home at the age of 17.
