The problems with the Simpsons are as follows:

    1. It's way too Homer-centric. Every episode is all about Homer. Giving Homer new meaningless jobs, making Homer a moron rather than a slow-witted half-assed father. There are very few episodes that center around Bart, Lisa, or Marge or the family as a whole.

    2. Poor use of secondary characters and over-reliance on newer secondary characters. The newer writers all seem intent on creating their own lasting characters and they're failing miserably. And in doing so, they're practically killing older characters. Just look at Ralph. He's a parody of himself. I can't even remember the last time Jimbo, Kearney, and Dolph did anything.

    3. The newer writers just plain suck, but they seem to be bringing back some of the older writers (Al Jean, Mike Reiss, Matt Selman) as producers, which, ideally, should help. But with Ian Maxtone-Graham as the lead producer, I don't hold out much hope. Who they really need back is Greg Daniels, but as long as King of the Hill is on the air, that won't happen.

    4. The endings aren't as good as they used to be. Simpsons episodes used to have happy endings. Up until around season 7 or 8, then they started trying to end on some bizarrely funny note, and they usually fail.

    5. The opening sequences that used to lead into the episodes are much longer than they used to be, dividing each episode into three distinct parts, rather than a consistent episode.

    6. The plots also used to be far more realistic. But it's grown much too cartoony and too Futurama-like in terms of outrageous plots.

    7. I think about this crap way too much and have absolutely no life.

And yes, despite all that, I will keep watching until the series is over, because I still think the Simpsons can be great again.

    Amazing.

The Simpsons are still great to me. sure the light has faded a bit. but I'd rather watch that than 98% of any other crap out there. A bad simpsons episode will beat any crapfest must see thursday has to offer.
would you rather watch Will and Grace or Friends?

I miss Futurama alot. that show's humor was more cynical and sharp witted.

I just wish they'd put a bullet in King of the hill, I've never liked that show.

I'm still a Simpsons' Fan, but I miss the good ol'days. Yesterday I saw the whole 3rd season and it was brilliant.

The characters have become silly versions of themselves. Lisa used to have friends (she had a pajama party after all!) now every episode stresses that she doesn't have a single friend. Bart isn't the Bart we all knew and loved. He used to be a rebel, now he's just stupid.

And when was the last time they pranked called Moe's!

MSN wrote a piece on the Return of the Simpsons. It's an interesting read.

    1. It's way too Homer-centric. Every episode is all about Homer. Giving Homer new meaningless jobs, making Homer a moron rather than a slow-witted half-assed father. There are very few episodes that center around Bart, Lisa, or Marge or the family as a whole.

I agree. A lot of the characters seem there to react to or serve the central character, Homer.

I truly love it when they explore the "minor" characters in more detail. I thought the episode that had 22 (or was it 23?) short films about Springfield was brilliant.

The Simpsons is still one of my favorite shows, but I agree that it is not as funny as it used to be. One of my biggest problems with the new episodes is the relationship between Homer and Marge. In the old episodes they had some great material together, but now, they hardly feel like they're married anymore. In fact, the whole Simpson's family doesn't feel like a family anymore. That's my biggest problem.

I really don't know where I stand on the Simpsons anymore. If I could pinpoint when it started to go downhill, it would have to be the episode where Homer meets Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin and Ron Howard. It really got lame fast starting with that episode. That was when (at least for me) that they started changing to the way they are now. I really don't care for the character changes over the last few seasons. Homer is now written as mean spirited, instead of the good hearted, but slow witted guy he used to be. Marge has even gotten dumber. Bart was an evil little hellion, but now he seems to be just a stupid, annoying kid, with no trace of the early Bart. Lisa was almost, but nowhere near as evil as Bart. But she was always a good kid, with some smarts. I haven't been able to stand Lisa since they turned her into a vegetarian/super genius, who regularly tells her father that they are "two very different people" and that her beliefs are right, and her family and everybody else is wrong. No 8 year old kid acts like that. And they kept her that way just so that Paul and Linda McCartney would lend their voices to the show.

That being said, there are some recent episodes that I like. The Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp was a good one, and Treehouse of Horror is always good for a laugh.

No, it really isn't-but then, what, they've been going for about fourteen years-that's a long time. And there are still some good ones every once in a while-like the one where Homer moves out and moves in with two gay roommates. And then Weird Al was on! WEIRD AL!!!

    Yay!

I'm really pissed that Futurama was cancelled.

But still, The Simpsons is classic. I swear, there is not one situation where you cannot some up with a Simpsons quote.

I lost interest in The Simpsons in 2000. That Behind The Laughter episode killed it for me. But, I agree about Homer. I liked it when he was an innocent kind of stupid. Now he's an ignorant kind of stupid.

I think Bart needs to come face to face with his other Arch Enemy DR DEMENTO!

I think they do need some new writers to add to the mix they have.
Bring in David Cross or something.

I think things will pick up, have faith. The simpsons is the one show that can jump the shark...then back up and do it again.

Now if they could just bring the Dvd sets out a bit faster. I mean really once a year..it's been on for 14 years..get a MOVE ON!!

I loved the one a few years ago, when Mark Hamill was on.

And then maybe it was last season, or the season before, when Mr. Burns wanted to capture the Loch Ness Monster, so they go to Scotland and drain the lake and then Nessie ends up as a bouncer at Mr. Burn's Casino?

I think they should ask Ewan McGregor to do a guestspot. He could be Groundskeeper Willy's cousin or something like that. That would be hysterical!

For me, the last worthwhile episode of The Simpsons was the 200th ('Trash of the Titans'). Whilst there has been the occasional 'highlight' since then, it has never-the-less, been one mined from a million. I use the 200th episode as a cut off point. That's when The Simpsons ended for me. I choose to ignore any episode after the 200th, because I know that I'm only missing a hint in the new episodes of what I can get in spadefulls through repeats.

The Simpsons should be cancelled. But it won't, because it still pulls an audience.

I agree with many of the complaints about The Simpsons ( Amazing's are the most notable), but the show is still very funny.

There's only so much you can do with the characters after 14 years.

But, if anybody wants, I can break out my episode guides and easily give you a list of some highlights from the past 6 years (the supposed decline of the show). There's more good than bad, people just like to focus on the negatives. :)
