Jebus - if you want a 'smokey' flavour, go for a peaty whisky like Lagavulin. (their 16 year old is superb). Glenfiddich is piss water palmed off on an unsuspecting public, imo. It's bland & insipid.
edit - Talisker 10 yr old is more affordable - it's not as peaty as Lagavulin, but it's less 'challenging' on the palate - and similar in price to Glenfiddich. Seriously, dude - everyone starts with fiddich, but it's time to move on to better things! :D

Whoever said they like famous grouse - bleuurrghh!

Whoever said blended malts > single is clinically insane

And the wine comparison doesn't work. Yes, the finest (red) wines in the world blend different grape varieties (classically - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot). Certain white wines also blend (Champagne is an exaple) - BUT the process by which whisky is made is quite different... a better parallel would be vin de table = blended malt, apellation controle = single malt

I agree with everything a-t-y just said. I'd like to add that most of the Islay malts have a good smoky flavor, as they're cured with peat smoke. Aardbeg and Laphroaig are great, and as was mentioned above, the 16 yr old Lagavulin is superb.
