    Paraphrased from memory:

"The droid we seek will soon be in the hands of the Resistance. If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise."

"Supreme Leader, I take full responsibi-"

"General!... Our strategy must change (key line)"

"The weapon is ready. With it we can destroy the government that supports the Resistance, the Republic."

I.E. the weapon was only used as a back up plan, in reaction to the Resistance having the advantage.

The second time it gets used, it's once again because the droid got away. It's used as a measure to keep the Resistance from finding Luke first.

With Palpatine, the Death Star was the center of his rule. It allowed him to disband the Senate and hopefully eliminate the Rebellion. With Snoke, SKB is a backup plan in both instances it's used. Both times to prevent the return of Luke, not because the Resistance are any threat themselves. Or at least Snoke never treats them as such.

It's Hux that gives the passionate speech about the Galaxy bowing to the First Order and destroying the Republic. Snoke seems not to care about them. He gave Hux the go ahead as an alternative plan to prevent Bb-8 from getting to the Resistance.

Throughout the film, there's a rivalry between Hux and Kylo vying for Snoke's approval.

They bicker about whether or not to destroy the droid. Kylo reads Poe's mind and Hux goes after the droid but fails. He then takes responsibility but suggests using the base. Snoke consents to this backup plan, but SKB seems to be Hux's baby, not Snoke's.

When the capital is destroyed, Kylo leads the attack to acquire the droid, but calls off the search when he finds Rey. He reports his failure to read her mind and Hux throws him under the bus for calling off the search for BB-8. So Snoke again approves the weapon. Kylo seems to get agitated by this and insists he can get the map from Rey with more training. Snoke instead demands Rey be brought to him.

When Hux's weapon fails, Snoke's last words in the film are that he'll finish Kylo's training.

There is a rivalry there and Hux and Kylo seem to offer two solutions to his problem. Kylo via the Force and Hux through technology. He doesn't seem to care how he achieves his goal of preventing Luke's return, just as long as it gets done. He entrusts it to Kylo, then Kylo fails. He entrusts Hux then Hux fails. He tries Kylo again, etc. And the movie ends with Snoke saying he'll complete Kylo's training as Hux's plan fails and his machine is destroyed.

Hux offered a solution to a problem to gain favor with Snoke. But the weapon wasn't the centerpiece of Snoke's plan like it was for Palpatine.

The opening crawl of TFA states that the First Order will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

To do so in reaction is not to be reactionary.

    Ok, you're correct. My mistake.

I mean the prior, that the weapon was only used in reaction.

Latest theory based on the novel Star Wars Life Debt : Snoke turning out to be Gallius Rax. The operator from Star Wars Aftermath.
I'll skip the backstory cuz you'll probably all read it but I still have my doubts about this theory:

    Here are some points:

    • Gallius Rax has black eyes, Snoke doesn't
    • Snoke is Force sensitive and knows of the Dark Side - if Gallius Rax knew the Force from young age, wouldn't Palpatine have sensed this and used him for other purpose or even killed? Though Gallius did governed a Sith related bisiness on Jakku...
    • Snoke's hole body is deformed - If Gallius Rax did survive a crash or got severe wounded after the battle of Jakku, wouldn't his wounds look different? Snoke's wounds aren't exactly burn scars...
    • Snoke looks ancient, even older than Palpatine. My guess is the way he looks comes from using the Dark Side. In the Force Awakens Art book an artist say this regarding an image of Snoke: it's almost like Snoke was quite handsome when he was younger. The more powerful he's become, the more the Dark Side consumes him.
My theory is that Snoke is the source of the Dark Side that Palpatine and later the surviving impirials were looking for. The "spoiler script" of the Force origin twins could turn out Snoke being the Force sensitive boy who killed his sister by the Force Tree and then run off in outer space.
Or else the only thing that could make sense on Gallius Rax knowing the Dark Side is that the Sith project he was guarding on Jakku, consumed him to his current look.
But why would a fleet admiral who later called him Emperator Rex would turn his name to Supreme leader Snoke???

    snoke is snoke

snoke is the emperor character jj needed and he probably didn't have a backstory when they were shooting TFA.

his design alternated between a snake man and an old woman.

If they didn't have Snoke's backstory fleshed out while shooting TFA, it's a safe bet that RJ has done something cool with it.
That would be a discussion for a different board, though.

For the record, I have no doubt that Snoke did have a backstory. His physical appearance probably makes little difference.

No way. Disney spent USD 4B on SW, of course they have the characters very well defined together with Pablo Hidalgo and the Story Group.

It said Palpatine 'sensed him'. Makes all the more sense if this guy had some Force connection. And then he goes off to find the 'source of the Dark Side'? Perhaps something he immersed in, ravaging his body, to boost his power...

While you would think that is true, it isn't always true in these kinds of things. In fact I would say more often than not they do not have the backstory fully fleshed out during the time of the shooting of the movie. Creative processes tend to be more free flowing.

Why wouldn't Palpatine sense Rax/Snoke if he sent him in the first place and they kept in touch?

I'm also one of those who really believes Snoke has some sort of backstory that was already established. They wouldn't embark on a whole new trilogy, having some main player villain like that pulling all the strings, and have him just be some random new being that has no established motivation or history behind him-especially if the story goes out of its way to keep him seeming mysterious. If they were going to have a villain that could stand up to the likes of Darth Vader or the Emperor, they wouldn't just toss a random bad guy in there-there'd be more effort towards making him a worthy successor (saga-wise) to those previous iconic villains.

I don't buy into the theory, but it's the best one yet. And the new character sounds cool.

Agree. Plus, if it was some new character, there wouldnt be so much secrecy about who he is, about his backstory

The idea that what Luke did by saving his father rather than killing him, showing him compassion instead of violence has to pay off. ROTJ had a "The End" that works on the surface.

Now that there is a new trilogy, whatever Luke did by saving Anakin has to directly cause something to happen that makes the new trilogy move forward in a massive way. I think Rey is a result of that and I think Snoke was then brought out into the open after his best accomplishment Palpatine was killed.

It's implied that he could see what happened on the Death Star as if he was there somehow. He seems very annoyed with Vader getting 'sentimental' in the book.

And a love triangle with Maz.

    TaradosGon

    Wow! Well-argued.

    Source of the Dark Side

I thought originally Snoke had blue eyes, but they were changed to black.

Now here's a question. Why doesn't he have yellow eyes? He's irredeemable, like Sidious. There may be hope for Ren. At least before he killed his father he was attracted to the light. Now it's up in the air for him. He could get darker until Ep IX Act III--then be redeemed or not. Should Snoke and the Ren have yellow eyes?

If they immerse themselves fully in the dark side and let it flow through them without concealing it, their eyes should definitely turn yellow.

Then that brings up the question of Dooku: despite him being a Sith Lord, did he ever fully embrace the dark side, because his eyes weren't yellow. Palpatine's initial lack of yellow eyes in the PT can be attributed, IMO, to the disguise/public face, which he dropped after enacting Order 66. And Anakin did have the yellow eyes as he slaughtered the Separatist leaders.

I've never taken the yellow eyes to be a permanent thing, but only as something that happens when they are essentially high on the dark side of the Force.

That's true. Then that means Palpatine was permanently high by the time of ROTJ, because they seemed to remain yellow.
