I had someone try to pay with a gold half-eagle once.

I told her "yeah, you'd better keep that one. Just use a $10 bill instead."

I collect old coins, and have plenty of them from the late 1800s, early 1800s, and 20ishBC. I've never found an old bill though.

My parents prefer to collect proofs, but those are more for the metal than the currency. :p

Those Sacagawea dollars are so lame. Every other country that has "gold" coins use real gold, but we use ugly brass and the sort. It was better when we used real gold.

Or those older silver dollars, with Susan B. Anthony. Those were cool.

Seren't they wroth some crazy, useless amount though? Like 73 cents, or somthing? 61, maybe?

EDIT: I'm trying to remember. Was it 37 cents? I know it was like a prime number.

I work at a bank, so I am seeing the "funny money" all the time. Whats hilarious to see is the person trying to deposit it or change it for something smaller/larger. How can anyone be so dumb?

Just to confuse the issue, Bank of England notes (£5, £10, £20 and £50) are accepted in Scotland as are Scottish Bank notes even though they aren't striclty speaking legal tender. [face_laugh]

The sacagawea dollar coin and the Susan B. Anthony coin were commercial and financial failures. The US mint should have simply stopped making $1 bills and forced the public to accept the fact that the coin was the new accepted dollar. I remember when they were introduced (both the sacagawea dollar coin and the Susan B. Anthony coin). People in the 1970's complained that they looked too much like the shape of a quarter. The Sacagawea looked like a coin wraped in foil. Wal-Mart even had a big launch for the coin... most people took them home and horded them, because they "thought" it would increase in value. No such luck. Silver Certificates are interesting because they are now being found and spent by people that have no idea what the value to collectors is. The sacagawea dollar coin and the Susan B. Anthony coin are both worth only $1 because they are legal tender. The only coins that will make it in value will be ones that have defects i the stamping process. However, most of those are scrapped before they leave the mint.:_|

I did the same thing once. I heard all the clattering and thought for a brief terrifying moment that I was being given 50+ quarters. I was actually really excited to spend the dollar coins, they're so much more convenient than dollar bills. We should just get rid of the bills and go exclusively to coins for $1.

I don't like the Susan B Anthony dollars because they look too much like quarters.

Auctally got a couple of those last night at work too.

I like the Sacagewea ones. They look like crap once they get tarnished, but meh.

Indeed - it was all they had to do, and it would've been the right thing to do.

I only hope they have the good sense to eliminate the penny sooner rather than later.

Even if the US Mint stopped production of the penny, it would still be used. People would use the billions of pennies that are already out there.

Just an FYI, it cost more money to make a penny than the penny is worth.

That's pretty crazy that he wanted to spend a silver certificate, especially one that was only worth a dollar. If I had one of those, I'd keep it as a conversation piece or something.

LOL. I try to fob off Canadian coins on unsuspecting checkout clerks whenever possible, so I guess we're counterparts in this underhanded dealing. :p
