So, just how offensive is the name "Redskins"?

Yet for some reason, the lipsticks seem to get by unscathed. :p

Oh, and btw, coolbeans on a actual serious topic in the Arena. :)

And yeah, I'd be offended if a team was called something like the California ******, or New York ****.

Words do have power, and whether or not some of you think that ignoring those words makes the hurt go away, obviously haven't ever experienced the sudden shock of a random insult.

Up until 1980 a high school in Pekin, Illinois (the city was named after Peking) had an official mascot of "Chinks". It was changed to the Dragons in 1981.

Yes you have, look back and you will see this:

Not all African Americans are offended by the "N" word....so should we be okay with using that word in public? Could we call a sports team by that name?

    Please answer.

Yes. The word isn't being used as an insult in this case.

And frankly, if something as minor as a word can cause you grief, then you need to re-examine your priorities. I'm sure there are better things you could be doing than taking offense at someone else's words. That's just petty. As strilo said, you can rise above the word.

Yes, but seeing the same word over and over again, being celebrated by ignorant people is offensive and hard to get over. Fans of the Redskins see that name as a sports team, Many Native Americans see it as the "N" word.

Redskin is like the "N" word for many Native Americans. Words carry power. Words have meaning.

Also, was that a yes to both questions???

It is okay to have a team called the "n" words and have an African American as the logo?? Please answer that part. You for got to do so.

Me getting offended by a word has nothing to do with me having better things to do with my life, since I can be offende and carry on with my life. Being offended does not take up all my time.

Well got to go, night is still young....

The N word is only racist if there is hatred behind it. Casual use of the word is not racist. So yes, it would be okay for a team to have that name with a black person as the logo/mascot.

That's one of the most foolish things I've seen posted on these forums.

You ARE out of touch with reality.

The "N" word is racist not ONLY if there is hatrad behind it, but because it is also used to classify a group of individuals. The word was used to make people feel less than human. It is a blanket term used by ingnorant people.

You cannot separate the word from it's meaning, since it was created for a specific purpose. HOW can you not see that.

The letters that make up the word are not racist, but the word as a whole symbolizes an era of our history in the U.S. that was brutally and ethically wrong. There is never a situation that would make it alright to use that word, and an African American as a logo.

I cannot believe that you actually believe this way. You are trying desperately to defend yourself, even though you know what you post is wrong. That is sad.

I find it interesting that you would think "the N word" is perfectly acceptable if there is no hatred behind it, but yet you don't actually use the word...

Calling that post silly is giving it too much credit.

Anyway, on topic. While it is true that every Native American isn't jumping up and down demanding that the name Redskins go away, that's hardly telling of how offensive or inoffensive it is. I'm not a big fan of political correctness for the sake of being politically correct, but the reality is that Native Americans simply don't have the power (economic or political) given their relatively small number in our society to significantly impact a team name or how Native Americans are represented by a team. Is the team intending to be racist? Probably not. Are they acting in a racist and demeaning manner anyway? Absolutely.

I guess it's not derogatory if you're aren't Native American, but I can assure you that it is if you are.

There's always exceptions to everything, mate. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be good to change the policy.

    Wow...how appropriate.

One poster on this thread admitted they were Native American, and people bring out the redskin jokes, when this poster said this offends them.

I know you two were trying to be funny, but would you be telling African American jokes on these boards, I doubt the mods would like that.

**** is a derogatory hate term while Redskin is not.

Not to you, but to them it is.

Well if those jokes are offensive then so is the name of the team.

Actually, if some of the ridiculous points that others have tried to make about Redskins not being an offensive term were pointed at another minority, I probably would be making jokes. Because, those points, and the way people are trying to justify the term, not being offensive, is a joke.

If you can't beat them, I guess you have to join them. We need to all get together in laughter. :)

Sure... but not at the expense of someone who finds these terms offensive, on this very thread even.

Yeah, be the better person and get over it. Maybe take your mind off things by going downtown to see a N****** game. That mascot is hilarious!

If you're talking about Harps, she knows damn well I'm not being insensitive.

    She's Native American

    Souderwan is Black

    I'm Asian

    and

    Strilo is Gay

So, I don't think any of us are being insensitive, as most of us have had to deal with crap at certain points of our lives because of our ethnicity. Sometimes, we have to laugh at the situation, but that doesn't mean that racial slurs hurt any less.
