To be fair, Big Star barely sold any albums whatsoever, but became one of the most artistically influential bands in recent memory.

agreed with AnakinsGirl. using d_b's method of calcuating the influence and general greatness of music artists:

BILLBOARD?S TOP TITLES & ARTISTS OF THE NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN ERA

    TOP TEN SELLING ARTISTS
(based on album sales from 1991-1/02/2011)
    Artist Units Sold

    1 Garth Brooks 68,513,000
    2 Beatles 62,066,000
    3 Mariah Carey 53,185,000
    4 Metallica 52,672,000
    5 Celine Dion 51,162,000
    6 George Strait 42,396,000
    7 Eminem 39,643,000
    8 Tim McGraw 39,396,000
    9 Alan Jackson 38,275,000
    10. Pink Floyd 36,429,000

so ur fave band ever beats out Mariah, ouch.

album sales do not equate to greatness, nor influence. i guess Titanic is the greatest movie of all time, too. and the SW Prequels are better than Citizen Kane. Bjork craps all over Gaga, i bet if you asked Gaga she'd say the same thing. Gaga probably freaking LOVES Bjork.

and lol @ Dani and whoeever else defending Gaga in here so acutely. if it wasn't so obvious that she's just a pop star, you wouldn't feel the need to go into such detail, trying to justify her significance by picking out the odd nugget of "meaning" in a few of her songs. who cares if she's just a pop star, why do we have to turn her into a symbol of hope for all women? carry on hating DD!

(that being all said I do like Papparazzi and even Telephone).

Well... depending on the prequel.... (really didn't like Citizen Kane).

I can somewhat get the annoyance at GaGa. Really don't like the songs of hers that I've heard, and really don't like most current mainstream music. The variety of pop just isn't a style I like, and there was a period where I was around other people that kept playing her stuff and it got very annoying, but that's very much a situational annoyance. Now that I don't have to hear her, and don't have to deal with her, it's not a problem. Clearly it's about filtering one's music better if certain stuff aggravates you that much. (In my case it was installing the "my car, my veto on music" rule)

And because I apparently need to note these things: that is not that my music is superior, I'm just more a rock/metal person than I am a pop/dance person. There are exceptions, but that's the general breakdown.

My 2 cents on this issue: I found arguments over the validity/preferences of musical talent as annoying & useless as the same type of discussion over beer/liquor..............everyone as their own tastes, you're not going to convince someone that the brand/musician they've always liked is as bad as you say it is/they are, so there's very little point in arguing. Of course, that won't stop this thread in exploding to 20+ pages, and retain its status as thread of the moment for a few more days or weeks.

I don't think much of Bjork either, to be honest, but at least she's not making out she's some kind of genius. I'd love to go for a few pints with her, though... she's clearly very bright and comes across as very personable when interviewed. Unless harassed by paparazzi, lol.

D_D, I just get fired up when people resort to name-calling during a perfectly civil discussion about a difference of opinion. Don't get me wrong, I get so protective and defensive of Bjork--I can relate to that emotion, for sure! However, it's really not my mission in life to convince people that she is a valid artist. Bjork is handling that all on her own :)

Want to hear real talent along the same vein as the Ga Ga, techno aesthetic? Fever Ray or The Knife channel the Euro-pop/club music sound but make it actually artistic, unique, special, and accessible. Seriously, checking them out will be worthwhile if you like the poppy/clubby sound.

    EDIT:

PS- this is AnakinsGirl's new handle. I changed it because there is and always has been way too much confusion between me and anakin_girl. Don't be too baffled.

The only thing I hate about her is her fans thinking her msuic is and videos areSOORIGINAL....
N***** please, her "originality" died out in 1930's avant garde scene, the dadaist and expressionist did way better stuff.[face_frustrated]

No it's a good thing! I chose the same icon for exactly that reason so I am glad it's working. I'm not trying to create a new identity or persona, just a new name for ease. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. ;)

What she does is nothing new, BUT, from what I can gather she does write her own songs. THAT is a point in my book. I will not buy any of her discs but what she is doing is simply dance music.

No harm no foul. She has a unique sense of style that draws attention. This type of music/visual will ALWAYS sell. We saw it with Madonna in the mid 1980's. Lady GaGa is doing the same thing. It is just a new century.

I admit I tap my foot to her tunes. She knows what she is doing. Hopefully she has a plan. I expect her in film roles in the next 3 years. ;)

She was on 60 Minutes this week.

She came off alright, seemed geniunely unpretentious... no labored pseudo-intellectualism that her detractors would have predicted.

Of course there was the tiresome, "You're wearing an outrageous outfit!" to put up with. Way to lower yourself Anderson; the shocking thing would have been if she'd been wearing something normal and boring when she knew a camera crew was showing up.

she was on Graham Norton on BBC a few weeks back. she had one outfit for opening song, changed for the interview, then changed again for the final song. half the interview seemed to be about the lol crazy clothes. she must get tired of it. i did. she came across, as someone else said, quite down to earth and jokey but whereas Madonna had a definite intelligence about what she was doing, i don't quite see that with Gaga. plus, "Born this way" -- what, "be true to yourself"? is this not the most cliched, hackneyed message to convey?

I actually kind of like Gaga. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a "Little Monster" but I have her music on my iPod and like that she has recently been moving past the "partying in the club" type music that's been everywhere recently.
