    I heard an NPR story over the weekend on why we still have the EC. Very good story. Really incredible to me that segregationists and minorities both opposed doing away with it.

    It's 50 state elections to elect the President. It's pretty good.

    Same. However, I just learned a new word ("cromulent") in this thread, so I'll consider this a good day so far.

    There's two separate axes, of a sort, here. On one hand, there's the question of what is the chance that your vote will change the outcome. But on the other is how well the state's electoral college votes represent the aggregate. And there's a couple ways of thinking about that, but in simply Electoral college votes per capita, Vermont and Rhode Island have about 2-3x the influence of New York or Massachusetts. Though they're all pretty solidly going to be won by the same party, their EC votes are not proportional.

    (incidentally, the small population state thing has always been a thing, some of the ways it aligns with political party strength is new)

    As a long-time lurker on this thread, but as a non-American with no right to comment, I reckon this GIF just about sums it up.

    Here we go again. Let's hope third time's the charm.

    My work computer is on, I am even at work, but I can't seem to focus.

    Everyone Google with me "how to pretend today is normal?"

    Not for the president but the downballot race might be significant. Might.

    Well, today I’m driving to go give a Civics Education PD to teachers near New Hampshire. At least it will keep me busy… and it feels like the essence of doing what is sorely needed in this country to prevent future Trumps.

    Also, I’m still surprised how COVID went nearly unmentioned this whole campaign.

    A loose power cable on the back of the ballot scanner slowed down voting for 15 minutes but I helped the election judge check cables. Lol

    So some good news from on the ground:

    I’ve talked about how Mecklenburg County voter turnout, which is notoriously low most of the time, is essential to turning North Carolina blue.

    My husband just went to our precinct location to vote—he is not a melodramatic reactionary person at all, and he sent me a text that said ‘OMG! I have never seen a line like this.’ It was fully wrapped around the building. This is after half of Mecklenburg County has early voted.

    Comparison to 2008 which is the last time North Carolina went blue—I voted early and stood in line, he voted on Election Day and was in and out in 15 minutes.

    I’m under no delusions that anything is guaranteed but this is a very good sign.

    Exactly the same. Absolutely cannot focus at work. I'm already assuming nothing will get done today.

    The ballot scanner's back up battery power was down to 18% by the time we restored power. I basically saved democracy.

    Remember, remember, the fifth of November…

    Anyhow, which Senate seats do we feel we should look at the most?

    I’ve been hearing most about the challenges to these incumbents
    * Sherrod Brown (D - Ohio)
    * Jon Tester (D - Montana)
    * Ted Cruz (R - Texas)

    Also there’s the open race in Arizona to replace Kyrsten Sinema.

    Joe Manchin has also retired, but that means Republicans are sure to pick up West Virginia.

    Any others?

    Voted! Harris and Dems down the line.

    I’ve been voting at this MA location (just outside Boston) for 8 years and this is the first time I’ve had to wait in an actual line! (10 min)

    Fortunately, I have a preschool storytime group this morning, so I'll be busy. When I think about it, preschool storytime is a lot like U.S. politics, except the kids are more interesting and (usually) better behaved.
