Yes, the convergence setting does provide more firepower on the target, so the only time the cannons would be at a disadvantage would be when a TIE is so close that all 4 lasers pass around the TIE.

Oy! Star Wars is science FICTION!!! Many many things don?t make sense in the real world. For example, there is no sound in space but it does not matter because it?s fiction! It?s not meant to be realistic. It?s meant to tell a story.

If I may ask, exactly how does putting the cannons at the far extremities of the craft help accuracy?

Just like linkng two telescopes together, forming and interferometer, provides better resolution than a single scope.

And perhaps others like to have the mental exercise of wondering how technology and design is SW might work. I would like to think about what hypermatter is and what it can do and why rather than assume it is the function of magic pixie dust.

IIRC, not all space battles in SW are done in actual space, excluding the Battle of Hoth.

Take the Battle of Corry in ROTS for example. They're not actually IN space, they're in the upper reaches of Coruscant's atmosphere where the laws of aerodynamics would apply to some extent. Hence: wings. I forget where I read that though, but it's true.

I think someone already suggested it, but X-wings are designed for atmospheric flight, and space flight. Unlike TIE fighters, who have only got wings in the metaphoric sense of the word.

I don't know where you might have read that either, but I know someone mentioned that in the DVD commentary

    The British accent question;

That was a rhetorical question about British accents relative to over-analyzing things in Star Wars.

    British/ Coruscant......

    Whatever.

Let's all make our own "space opera" ( Geoge Lucas's words ) and see if we can make it better than he and ILM did.

    How about that?

    Just leave it alone.

Uncle G is sitting back home swimming in dough, cabbage, digits, dead presidents, etc.
while us SW geeks nit-pick x-wing designs and stuff.

Unlce G-Money has a swimming pool filled with 100 dollar bills as we speak.

    Who cares about x-wing designs?

    It made him a multi-millionaire.

    That's the whole point.

Because discussing questions such as these gives us a way to keep the interest in Star Wars alive. If you don't feel like discussing, feel free to excuse yourself.

That's why I tried to keep my response polite but to the point.
