Spice

Hi,

Has George Lucas ever gone on record as to what "spice" is exactly?

As far as I can remember it is only ever mentioned in the OT a couple of times - and only in ANH at that.

Since Han Solo has transported it illegally I have always assumed that it is a narcotic, but yesterday I was watching AotC and Mace Windu tells Padmè that he believes that spice miners from the Naboo system are behind the attack on her ship.

The Naboo don't seem like the type to allow narcotic production on their doorstep - certainly Padmè would end it.

It is never explained why the miners are "disgruntled" - whether it pay and conditions fir mining a valuable but harmless element or that Padmè is trying stop the supply of dangerous drug.

Or are there different types of spices.

I'm not so interested in the EU or novelisations but more the Lucas Star Wars "bible".

 

This is something I've wondered about. The films themselves never do state that spice=drugs, and I wasn't aware of that meaning until I began reading the EU. Is it purely an EU concept? Was it present in any of Lucas's notes? I don't remember anything in the OT novelizations.
