Are you saying that spider-man is going downhill like some of actors did in the 90s?

I am getting the impression that you don't entirely understand what you read here.

He is saying that he doubts that the Actors and Director will stick around for all 6 or 7 proposed films, but if the franchise continues and lasts that many films without losing any quality, we might get to see more variety of villains other than the very classic Stan Lee villains. My guess would be he is referring to villains like Morlun. :p

If the old actor cast don't show up in the new films of spider-man,the chance are they may not show up in theaters, you may have to just buy them at a Video store.

Direct-to-Video?? Doubtful. Even with casting changes the franchise can survive, and Sony would want to make as much as they could at the box office before the inevitable DVD sales.

Yeah, it's simply a matter of the studio wanting to make more films in a franchise whose every entry hits the top 10 grossing films of all time. They'll keep tapping that franchise with or without Tobey, Dunst and Raimi. They'll at least try once without them if it comes to that, in the hopes of a Casino Royale/Batman Begins/Star Trek recasting success. Heck, they almost replaced Tobey in Spider-Man 2, and that was BEFORE Spider-Man 3 came out to mixed reviews.

Oh yeah. I'd almost forgotten the whole bad back/more money/Gyllenhaal thing.

I would love to see a new cast, particularly Spidey but so long as the original group wants to keep going Sony will continue to bank on the successful formula.

For me it's "particularly MJ". Tobey's much more tolerable.

MJ I have had an issue with as well, but I can live without her if need be. The biggest loss to the series is the web head's snarky comments IMO.

Aw, heck, throw 'em all out as far as I'm concerned. They had their chance with 3 to give us something truly great, truly transcendental, and gave us a hack job with too many close-ups and infuriating plot developments.

Keep the same tone and feel, the same style and visual approach, but re-cast the actors and give us a fresh writer-director. Sez me.

Spider-Man 3 is what you get when the studio interferes to much and tries to make the most profitable movie possible rather than the best movie possible. They shoehorned Venom in and it shows. Hopefully they won't be sticking their fingers in part 4 and let the writers and director do the jobs they were hired to do.

I don't buy this "studio interference" line. Alvin Sargent, who wrote Spidey 2 to such remarkable results, was brought back to polish up Ivan Raimi's script which in turn was based on conferences with brother/director Sam. Given the success of the first two films, both critically and financially, it would be unreasonable and, one would think, unnecessary for Sony to try to step in and gum up the works with their own notions.

Combine this proposition with the accounts of Sam Raimi's change in personality during the making of Spidey 2 -- in which he is said to have transformed almost overnight into a soulless businessman, to the mortification of people who had worked with him for years -- and you have all the ingredients you need for a by-the-numbers hackjob, without the scapegoat of corporate executives allegedly throwing a wrench in the works.

If you read interviews with Raimi or Sargent, they don't say anything about this supposed studio interference; quite the opposite, they wax philosophic about the motivations of this character or the underlying purpose of that plot line, and are quite clear that they conceived these ideas, not some lounge-chair pencil-pusher manipulating the credited authors like puppets from behind a curtain.

EDIT: Okay, granted: Producer Avi Arad pushed for Venom, whereas Raimi initially wanted Ben Kingsley as Vulture. However, Arad is not part of the "studio", and in time Raimi grew to like the Venom character and to see his potential within the tale he and his co-writers wanted to tell.

Spider-Man 3's problem was that they tried to make two movies initially, then condensed it into one. So we only got part of a Sandman story and only part of a Venom story, with a terrible bridging moment. Spidey 3 should have ended in the church, with Spidey 4 picking up with Venom.

Well said. I also think he should of added Carnage to the fourth Film.

By the way, Dunset is coming back for Marry Jane.

Merlin: Raimi is famous for his nice guy motif. It takes a lot for him to blame anyone for the issues of the film. However, he has gone on record to state that there were too many cooks in the kitchen on Spider-Man 3, and thats where the film got away from him, which is in contrast to Spider-Man 1 & 2 where he was the driving creative force. Reports indicate he will be again on Spider-Man 4. This is the same guy who, despite Elfman's bile spewing reports of what happened on SM2, has nothing but great things to say about Elfman. Raimi is forever publicly positive regardless of what else is happening.

This came over the Superherohype.com today and there are a couple of interesting tidbits.

    So
    - Dunst is back as MJ
    - No Spider-Wedding
    - No Morbius
    - Villain is being chosen now & will "be a big part of New York"

Difficult to say what they mean by that since most of Spidey's villains are NYC centric, but I am definitely liking the prospect that is might be a more crime boss oriented film. There are no shortage of stories to tell there, and we might get a chance to see more secondary characters pop up even as cameos.

Anything stating that, at least that I can find, is unsubstantiated fan wishing, rather than factual data. According to official sources a few days ago they haven't made it official who or what is involved, but hints indicate that the character may have some specific connection to NYC.

I would hazard a guess that Carnage is unlikely given the backlash about the mistreatment of Venom in Spider-Man 3, and Raimi's interest in a more classic rogue.

Now I think we should stay away from rumours unless you have something to support it. "I heard" does not suffice.

I Read it on comingsoon.net about talks about Carnage and I know it has not be confirmed. I wish they added both Venom and Carnage to the same film and have them compete agaisnt each other.

I am looking through the articles on comingsoon now and I am not seeing anything about Carnage. Do you have a link to the source??

I remeber reading it somewhere but I think they may cancel the carnage Charctor for the Fourth coming movie. I know it was not confirmed and if I was wrong about it I am sorry. I do know that sami rami is directing Spider-man 4 and Dunset is coming back for Marry Jane.

If they are in fact doing a Venom spin-off/reboot film, they may save Carnage for that film series (and, presumably, if they took that approach, perhaps Toxin down the road).

With NYC characters I'd go with-

    Vulture
    or
    Scorpion

but i know there's a ton more out there to choose from. IMO, Vulture would be bland but i know he was thrown around for SM3. Scorpion could be interesting if the use the old J.J paying for his creation to take down spidy.

I vote for Vulture, the Lizard and Man-Wolf. The old, the middle-aged and the young, all animal-men in some form or another, two of them redeemable, one a friend/mentor to Spidey, one a former rival for MJ's affections. Plus which, they've been setting up the Lizard for three gorram films, and it's time to roll him out! [face_skull]

I could see The Lizard working (sewers could qualify for the NYC anchor mentioned). The Vulture would be too silly, and no one is going to see a movie with a character called Man-Wolf in it.
