I just made a new Tumblr (I believe my fourth since 2010), and was met with Reylo fan art of an... explicit nature almost instantly. I feel like my eyes need to be blessed by a priest, and I'm not even Catholic.
On one hand, I'm happy that people are engaging with the series. I knew that there would be a huge upswing in fan art, even shipping fanart, after the film's release, and I chalk that up as a success on the film's part. It got people to care enough to create things about characters that they loved that much. If these are new fans who are now that invested, that's huge! If these are people who were already fans, and they connected with these new characters the way they have with the old ones, that's huge! That gives me all sorts of warm and fuzzy feelings, because Star Wars is my favorite thing, and it's cool knowing other people connect with it and love it as strongly as I do, even it it's not in the same way or for the same reasons. But the whole Reylo thing leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. It's the same kind of infatuation I didn't understand people having with Loki. Not interest, mind you; I think Loki is one of the more interesting characters in the MCU and I love when he's on screen. I feel similarly about Kylo Ren, I loved the character, he was well written and exceptionally portrayed and I can't wait to see more of him. It's the infatuation I don't get. They're both creepy, evil, violent, ill-tempered, and have committed/attempted acts of patricide. I'm just at a loss as to how that translates to, "OMG MY FEELS!!11!1!!!11! BEAUTIFUL PRECIOUS BABY ANGEL!!!"
Scribble! I am now delving into the world of digital art and guess what....I STILL SUCK AT IT! Actually: I'm getting better
I find his floofy hair amusing as hell. Fandom always generates shipping of the creepy sort, it comes with the territory. At least in other fandoms, people were slightly less convinced of it actually coming to fruition. That's whats wild about Reylo, they think it might actually come true and be the core of the story. That's what disturbs me. On topic.... I really love that people are running with Marks photo. http://glynrick.tumblr.com/post/142639990523/this-is-how-i-was-trained-coloured-version Its just so much fun, even if we wont actually see it on film
Evidently most Reylo shippers are into dystopian movies/literature where this sort of love story happens 100% of the time.
Nice. SW is a massive franchise, and people like/enjoy different elements of it. People are perfectly free to hate/feel uncomfortable with Reylo, but is it really appropriate to claim it's a blight? Plagueis truthers annoy me but I'm not going to behave like they need to be eradicated from the fandom. If I see something I don't like/am not interested in, I shrug and move along. Life's too short. And this thread isn't the place for sniping - it's about fanart, not taking potshots. So I duly present this masterpiece by Adam Hastings, which should please everyone who wants Kylo Ren to be kicked in his pretty face:
