"The Force Awakens" IMO probably has dual meaning ... it references Daisy and/or John beginning their journey to become Jedi. And it also refers to the end of the movie when Luke switches back to 'normal Luke' from 'crazy hibernating Luke', hence the "Force Awakens".

Yes and that's why I think it will probably work as a title.

QOTSA is one of the top 5 acts right now IMHO. Saw them live this year and they kicked my ass, it was a great show. The guitars sound like a chaninsaw coming out of 50s tube amps through the swamps of Dagobah.

Wow. I've been incommunicado in a Central American jungle for two weeks, and when I emerge I find this news waiting. Phenomenal. Love the title and the fact that they are dropping the "episode" subs to give it an OT feel. I always felt those were unnecessary and were mostly there to inform the unwashed masses that they were watching prequels. Well, I think this has all been said. Just psyched to read the news.

Alright, I had a knee-jerk reaction against The Force Awakens title for EP7 when I first read this yesterday, hence my earlier post. After thinking about it for a while, I'm still not thrilled with the title since I consider it very "boring", for lack of a better word. It sounds like the title of one of those young adult SW novels that have come out over the years - i.e., fine for the title of a children's book, but not too interesting as the title of a new major motion picture in the most popular & successfull film franchise of all time...Note this is the first SW film title I haven't liked - though I have varying opinions on the quality of the 6 films so far, IMHO the titles have all been excellent - until this one...

However, as has been said, once we find out more plot points about the film I'm guessing the title will make more sense.

The thing is, I guess the title also brings to mind the thought that the film will be more oriented towards children than adults. Obviously, all of the SW films are designed to appeal more to kids anyway....heck, I was in first grade when I saw ANH in '77, and have been a fan ever since. However, I don't want to see a sanitized, wimpy film just because Disney has taken over Lflm. Who knows, maybe I'm just getting too old to be excited by these films..

I Tweeted about this (because I'm modern and cutting edge like that...) but I think our society needs to retire certain recycled, exhausted pop culture hyperbolic rhetoric. We graduated from people still cutting & pasting verbatim 1999 "insights" about how CGI makes Star Wars films "look like a video game" to "that title sucks! It sounds like a video game!" and, meanwhile, most modern video games are lauded and winning awards for being "a cinematic experience". Uh, 1999 called, haters. No, it didn't want its shtick back. It was calling to let you know that video game design is no longer a low bar.

Now hang on a sec, I will in the dirt to defend my own personal use of the video game cliché.

My bias and bias I agree with is cool, I thought I had made that perfectly clear.

From everything we've heard in rumors, this won't be your typical first chapter 100% light-hearted family adventure. There will be darkness involved.

Seriously, I'm shocked at all of the lukewarm or even negative attitudes toward the title. Sure, it sounds like a random SW novel title, but pretty much everything would. The title flows, its catchy

What do you mean by the Force being a "universal concept"?

What was not straightforward about Palpatine's plots?

I know for the characters it confusing because the can't see the "big picture" but it is simple enough for an audience member?

It explained or easily figured out - if anything is vague about Star Wars, it is the Force.

Well that would make sense seeing as how it's the seventh chapter in our little adventure. :)

I'm not shocked...or even a tad bit surprised.

I awakened this morning liking it even more than yesterday.

What title would have "whelmed" you? ;)

I was surprised by the lack of "pomp" surrounding the announcement, but have realised since that, bar John Williams' return, all other announcements have been done in pretty much the same matter-of-fact fashion.

I'm "thrilled" by the title - the only title that did get me excited was "Attack of the Clones" (finally the Clone War ;)) - but then, no movie title ever does.

It doesn't mean anything until I see the film, same as any other title.

What DOES thrill is that it has a name - it is more real, filming is done, etc. and that "TFA" is easier on my thumbs than "Episode VII" :D

Of course there will be darkness - it is good vs. evil, my dad destroyed the universe and killed my mom, and the Jedi will be back maiming guys left, right and centre like Indy shooting Nazis.

However, it won't be heavy handed and melodramatic - it will be fun old fashioned "villains we love to hate".

The most satisfying star wars abbreviation is KotOR.

It's just so fun to type. KotOR. KotOR.

Man, I hope they do a film someday.

Since you and Artoo Dion want to believe the internetz, I will tell you something that really isn't true, that website you linked too a few pages back, here it is:

I found the actual article they are referring too from Starlog. It is in Issue 18 (December 1978). Your website is pretty much lying through it's teeth:

    • It wasn't even Lucas that gave the interview like your website alluded too. It was Gary Kurtz that gave the Interview! Your website knew this because they purposefully cut out the parts in the quoted article that says "Kurtz Winced" or where he says "George and I"
    • Obviously they changed who was being interviewed from Kurtz to Lucas because if it's Lucas that says those things, it gives more credence to the anti-Lucas narrative the website is trying to push.
    • Your website source also cut parts of what Kurtz said out which altered the context of what was being said!
    • That website obviously pandered to people like the two of you that will eat up anything anti-Lucas and assume it's true because you want it to be true, even though it's False. They hope people won't actual fact check them! Because everything's true onthe internetz!
Here is the actual, unaltered , section from the interview:

Here is where you can read it for yourself, https://archive.org/stream/starlog_magazine-018/018#page/n19/mode/2up

See what I just did? I cited my source so you can read it for yourself! I don't expect you do assume I am telling you the truth!

So now that we have the actual article, and not some cut and pasted, falsely attributed, lying piece of crap, from that website we can analyze it!
So here we have the proper context of what Kurtz (not Lucas) is saying. He is pointing out how they would never call Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars 2 as in the way sequels are normally numbered. He was not referring to the actual Episode number at this point. That was the "usual Hollywood sequel slang". For example Airplane, than Airplane 2. Kurtz is saying that they won't follow that tradition, that it will have a named title and not a traditional numbered sequel number.
Now here is where we get into the Episode numbering! Kurtz admits to the fact that they had, in their original plans to number A New Hope with an Episode number. He admits that it was "part of the plan" from "the inception of the original film". What was the original film? Well it was A New Hope. So here we have back in 1978 Kurtz admitting that there was an idea to number A New Hope with an episode number and number it in a way that shows you were coming into the story part way through!

So here we have Kurtz telling the interviewer that they are "toying" with the idea to not use any Episode numbers, and only go with the named title. Thus why earlier in the interview he states that the working title is only The Empire Strikes Back. I want to speculate that they were even toying with the idea to drop the title Star Wars entirely, and call it The Empire Strikes Back only. However, that is only speculation on my part in how I am reading the article. Again, the huge info here is how Kurtz admits that the true number for A New Hope would be Episode 4! Not Episode 1! This is backed up with his earlier comment as to how the original plan was to number the episodes like the old serials to come in part way into the story!
Now here is where Kurtz talks about why they got away from the Episode numbering. That it was confusing to the audience. Lucas in the DVD commentary and other interviews attributes this to the studios way of thinking and they made him take it out.

So there you have it, in late 1978 Kurtz was walking about how they originally planned to give Star Wars A New Hope an Episode number, that is was an idea he and Lucas had "from the inception of the original film".

I just love how that website you are referring too, cut out the sections of the interview that shows Kurtz admits to the fact that A New Hope was originally intended to have an episode number. They obviously cut those sections out to support their anti-Lucas narrative!

Because he didn't know that little bit of trivia? That is one of the most asinine things ever posted on this forum. You don't get to define what makes a "big fan" is or call into question someone's level of fandom because he didn't know some piece of trivia. Keep that jackwagonry to yourself.
