This November, you don’t have to travel to Kashyyyk to celebrate the lessons of Life Day.

StarWars.com is thrilled to announce a new Marvel comic book one-shot, Star Wars: Life Day issue #1, featuring four unique stories by Cavan Scott, Justina Ireland, Jody Houser, and Steve Orlando.
Today, we also have a first look at the cover art by Phil Noto below!

    THE GALAXY’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY!

Happy LIFE DAY! Celebrate the galaxy’s favorite holiday with a collection of festive tales from all across the STAR WARS SAGA! Life Day is the last thing on HAN SOLO’S mind when he and CHEWBACCA find themselves outgunned and under fire. But Chewie won’t give up hope, remembering the lessons of Life Days past and present. As for Life Days yet to come… well, they’ll have to survive the night first!

“Being part of this Life Day Special is a surreal, exciting moment in time, for this writer who, as a kid, would routinely watch Return of the Jedi every Sunday after skiing, and pour over the nooks and crannies of Star Wars lore,” Orlando tells StarWars.com. “And nothing was more mysterious to me than the often alluded to, never rebroadcast, Holiday Special. To be able to celebrate concepts introduced there, not to mention to be handed the keys to the Millennium Falcon, is the perfect Life Day gift in of itself.”

Houser says she’s excited to return to writing for a galaxy far, far away. “And even better, in the spirit of Life Day, I get to do it with friends,” she adds.

Writers also include Scott and Ireland, who are currently adding to the lore of Star Wars: The High Republic.

“With the galaxy’s greatest holiday approaching, it’s been great to add a little festive cheer to Han Solo and Chewbacca’s life,” Scott muses. Each writer has penned a very different Life Day tale, Scott promises, “from the days of the High Republic to the struggle against the Empire and beyond. There are carols and parties and decorations and… blaster fights and sarlacc pits? Well nothing says peace and harmony for all beings than a slavering, tentacled monster, does it?”

And Ireland’s tale has a direct link to another fan-favorite Wookiee character first introduced in Light of the Jedi. “I’m really excited to have a chance to tell a Life Day story about the furriest Padawan around, Burryaga!” she says. “After all, you can’t spell ‘Life Day’ without ‘Areeeeeoooo!'”

Cool, looks like a slightly less crazy version of the original holiday special in comic form.

Hopefully it is as lighty and fluffy as the original Holiday Special.

Note I didn't say as corny...

Anything that builds the universe without another galactic spanning peril is a win for the brand. Bring it on!

I love that they are low key finding a way to make the Holiday Special, or elements of it, canon. The Han and Chewie story could easily be an adaptation.

Heh the most salvageable scenes are those not about Life Day.

"Celebrate" is an interest turn of phrase. Are we celebrating the weird antics of the Wookiee household? The creepy Tree of Life ceremony? The guy who drinks from the top of his head?

I'd love it if one of the stories had art inspired by The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, that short still has my favourite animation of any Star Wars project.

IDK if you know but there's gonna be a Little Golden Books adaptation of The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, so you're already covered.

So, it's only a matter of time before they cajole Lucas into letting them put the full Holiday Special on D+ isn't it?

    Unlettered preview pages:
"The special will feature multiple stories representing different eras of Star Wars lore, including an adventure between Han Solo and Chewbacca, a tale starring Solo and Princess Leia and a flashback to the life of Burryaga, a Jedi Padawan from the High Republic."

...can they someday make one of those wordless stories like Tuesday? Because this comic looks hilarious without dialogue.

I would love if they tried that out! Back before it came out, I remember hoping the 2015 Chewbacca mini would be something like that -- a bunch of untranslated Wookiee grunts and roars, and no joining up with any characters that spoke Basic.

I just recently read one of the old newspaper strips, The Kashyyyk Depths, which also involves a Life Day celebration, and I really enjoyed the silly design of the sureggi. Fingers crossed one pops up in this issue, even if just in the background -- it seems like one of those old weird-but-fun goodies that Cavan Scott & Co. would happily utilize...

I was just showing my kids my old scrapbooks of the original newspaper strips form when I was (way) younger than they are now... and we all really dug the sureggi. Definitely time for them to return!

That was my first thought as well, actually, even more than the Holiday Special: "This is like a modern update of the Kashyyyk Depths!"

And I KNOW if Jason Fry was involved somehow he'd include the Sureggi, he loves those guys. They turned up in a WOTC reference book Jason wrote, he got a mention of them included in an updated Locations book, and even one almost made it into the TLJ novelization.

It bums me out that this comic drops on the 24th and not the 17th. Like, the 17th is a Wednesday and it's just RIGHT THERE, the 43rd anniversary of the Holiday Special. How did they miss it?

Cool little story this one. The art in the frame story was not quite to my taste and only one of the storys made Chewie and Han actually look like Chewie and Han. But the stories itself were neat, I especially like the inclusion of Nib and Burryaga and them meeting Chewies dad was a nice little continuity nod, that wasn't completely riduculous. Generally I've always had a soft spot for Wookiee Jedi, Lowbacca was one of my favourites in the old canon, so I'm always happy to get more of Burryaga or Arkoff. Despite the art being very different from the usual Marvel fare and Chewie not looking like Chewie at all, I also really liked the story with the Trandoshans. Seeing this Wookiee facility and its purpose was quite cool, presenting the Wookiees ingenuity, which is something that could be done more, to offset the impression that they are simple brutes. The story with the Rebels on that planet was also neat, the frame story was ok, but I definitely liked it the least. Overall a nice little one shot, that celebrated the Holiday special without being absolutely silly and gave us some nice tidbits about Wookiees. Really happy with this
